Strange phone call - scam maybe?

Just had a call from a UK mobile number.

Answered it and got an automated message:

"This message/call (I cant remember which was used) may contain important information for you, for English press one, for Chinese press 2.." it carried on but I pressed one.

A male answered and said "Hello, how can I help you?"

I said "I dont know, you called me" and call was immediately disconnected

I am thinking it is checking my number is a personal number and the scam follows at a later date. Would you agree? Anything else it could be?

Interested to hear the hivemind's thoughts or if anyone else has had this?

    who answers a phone from an unknown number ?

    just wait and see if they leave a voicemail

    Get so many scam calls every week now..... basically 90pc of the time the phone rings (people i know whatsapp call me) it is a recorded message, or it instantly hangs up.

    I never answer my phone unless i'm expecting that call and it's a number I know (have saved as a contact).
    Everything else i'm contacted by other means anyway these days, email usually.

    One thing I never do with this kind of call is press any numbers, you could open up a real can of worms with that, I love those stupid recorded voice one's telling me that there has been suspicious activity on my Amazon or Bank account...😂

    I don’t answer any number I don’t know if it’s that important they will text you.

    Yep, love wasting their time.  I kept one guy on for about 15 minutes told him about the injuries we all received while driving  a mini.  "How many people in the car were injured?" he asked.  "43" I said. Phone went dead.

    Could be, they've established the phone is live and somebody is answering it.  Might not even be a UK number, geographical numbers are easy to get hold of nowadays.

    Not according to my mobile provider. Interested to hear what you are thinking of in terms of consequences though?

    Last personal injury one I had hang up was when I said I'm ok but can I claim for my girlfriend, they asked what was wrong with her and I said she had a fall, they asked how she fell so I told them she tripped over my penis.

    I love Google call screening for this now, if it's something important they'll leave a message or I can see what they're saying in real time, and pick up or leave it accordingly

    Been getting shitload of these recently.
    Mobiles mostly with recorded messages when you answer selling solar panels and car claims

    If you're Chinese, how would you know to press 2 if the voice said it in English?

    I have to , as hospitals always use a withheld number. 
    I’m always awaiting a call from one specialist or another for results , which does make it doubly annoying when these leeches call you either be it a scam or an Indian call center claiming they are calling on behalf of a mobile provider.

    Recently binned BT, have a voip contract with another provider. They have blown me away so far. Not had single scam call since we switched over nearly 3 weeks ago. Had our number ported over and saving a load of cash each month. Happy to share more, please pm if you do. I know this sounds like a sales pitch but we are well happy.

    I binned BT off years ago, as soon as we got FTTP internet. We use wifi calling on mobile so never bothered with a VOIP as wasn't arsed about having a landline type number.

    I know the numbers of Vodafone, Virgin and E-on and don't answer them. E-on are always on at me to get a smart metre. Virgin and Vodafone want to sell me stuff! If it is a number I dont recognise I don't answer it unless I am expecting a call from someone. It annoys me that you get so many junk calls. I find it an intrusion.

    If you have Sky I would advise you to ask for Sky Shield and it stops computer scams getting through and even better it is free

    I got a call from a foreign accented male other day claiming to be from my mobile provider. I asked which one and had tried to avoid it so I asked again and he said one which it isn't, so I hung up. But of course they at least know it is a genuine number

    Had a missed call from an 0121 (Birmingham?) number but they didn't leave a message - I will try and look up the number tomorrow to see if it is known

    Unfortunately work calls from a landline don't show a number is shown so I have to answer just in case

    Shrek gets more scam calls than me. He says 'hold on I'll go somewhere quieter' then mutes the call. It's amazing how long they hang on before they realise he isn't going to speak to them. And he once showed interest in taking out a loan and said it was to buy a plane - again it took a while for them to realise he was winding them up. He's done that several times or something similar

    I used to play along quite a lot and when they finally got to asking me for personal info they almost always started with address so I would give the postcode SW1A 1AA.  Most had never heard of Buckingham Palace so would carry on asking me more.  Name given was obviously always Charles... Sooner of later they figured out it was a piss take.

    Now I just use a blocker as can't be bothered with it.

    The NHS are now using an automated calling system. I answered an unknown number and it asked if I was Solidgone. It then asked me to input my DOB which I did. This then took me to a person in the NHS who wanted to make an appointment for an endoscopy. 
    It maybe a way of saving staff time dialling up patients who don’t answer their phones to unknown numbers.

    I don't answer unless I know who it is.

    I'm with Sky Mobile and most spam calls come up with a message 'Suspected Spam'.

    It's advisable not to speak to unknown callers, as scammers can now use AI to copy your voice and use it for fraudulent purposes.
