So, if Bell, Leaburn, TC and a few others were at risk of injury, you would play them anyway?letthegoodtimesroll said:
You can play basically divide our promotion season into two halves. The first half when Nathan was constantly changing the team around game by game and we were looking at the relegation spots by the time Crawley beat us at home; and the second half when Nathan more or less picked the same starting eleven for every game and we kept winning all the way to Wembley. It’s funny how a winning team can often avoid lots of injuries and a team that’s chopped and changed and plays like it doesn’t know its arse from its elbow as a result of the confusion caused seems to so easily pick them up.soapboxsam said:letthegoodtimesroll said:Tinker with an already successfully bonding and growing more confident by the game side and if it starts to not go so well from the kick off you will undo everything that’s been achieved so far. We already have momentum from the 3 competitive games we’ve played and won so far. Keep it going, let each player do their bit, they can dig a lot deeper when things are going well.
In an Ideal football world I would agree with you about momentum BUT Charlton's record for players being injured or crooked isn't great.
By near the end of last Season Ramsay, Jones and Bell were all carrying injuries and because of our perilous position had to play or come back too soon because until Hull city at home and the 2 wonder goals we were struggling big time.
As mentioned above, no way can Chalobah, Bell or even Leaburn play too many minutes if at all with their CV's of injuries. Nothing to do with cotton wool as players can get injured in training but everything to do with players 100% ready for Preston.
Of course Danny Spanner wants to play as every pro footballer would at a Premier stadium like Spurs.
Lloyd Jones will probably convince NJ to let him be captain and start !
It's Nathan's Gig and he with the Analysts and Coaches will monitor the data and what he feels in his gut is the best solution to CAFC having 3 games a week until the International break.
3 games a week in this league if risking a few of our players, but I expect you know that already.
It could go wrong whatever he does, but the point of my argument is about how to use the whole squad and not rely on the same 11 players.0 -
A common sense post.BansteadAddick said:Really not too fussed about the result but really hope whatever team is put out does us proud. I am sure they will. 3-1 to Tottenham but think it will only be finished off late.0 -
I really wonder how teams in years gone by coped when they had replays to contend with, just 1 substitute to use, and the pitches were mud heaps.soapboxsam said:letthegoodtimesroll said:
Ah yes, the old dumb logic of ‘you lot are playing really well so you can’t play in this big glamorous cup match, whereas you other lot are shit and not so important as the first lot so you can play in this glamorous cup tie.’BigDiddy said:
I would not risk Grant or Leaburn.sam3110 said:Okonkwo
Mcnamara Sichenje Burke Mesík
Docherty Mwamba
Alli Knibbs Grant
Leaburn
Brooks Jones Koumetio Ouma Apter Carey Coventry Campbell Mbick
i would play Mbick and Apter/Carey.
Also need to protect McNamara with Kayne out for many weeks more.
The only logic that Nathan Jones has to use is we have a league game against Preston on Saturday and I can't risk certain players on a Wednesday evening if it affects their ability to be fit and Sharp at the weekend where it's possible for CAFC to go top of the Championship depending on WBA and another team's results.
Ponder that peeps.
Brian Cough will be turning in his grave listening to some of you5 -
Hardly surprising, but a few here think they know better than NJ.aki2798 said:Rich Cawley just tweeted:Managing director Jim Rodwell told talkSPORT that Nathan Jones is "set to rest quite a few" for #cafc's EFL Cup tie at Tottenham. Also adds that there will be "a few debuts".

That’s fair.Sword65pf said:Too many changes at once and we are shooting ourselves in the foot, think we will have a bit of a mix, the current 1st teamers will be a bit gutted not playing in this one, well I would be if I were a pro.
Only saying that he should rest [or bench] those at risk of injury- that aside he should pick hi s best team.
As an example, if Bell is only 75% fit, why risk him?

Just to say again that we have Weds fixtures in the league next week and the week after so that will make for interesting selection decisions for those matches.
I understand the need to manage minutes for Bell, Chalobah, maybe one or two others but won’t be particularly chuffed if we field newbies and kids and get tonked. It will make beating Preston harder overall.4 -
Rodwell mentions debuts tonight on talksport, I’m guessing he’s including full debuts in that. So potentially at least a few out of Ouma, Mbick, Mwamba, Alli and Mesik. We also have Brooks but I can’t see that happening.3

I totally agree we need to be making the league our priority, but as much as we need to be sensible, nearly 6 thousand are turning up to see us try to win and not just treat it as a nothing game.BigDiddy said:

If we don't sing 'Goodbye Horse' this evening then we deserve nothing.4

Most sensible fans agree- he will probably change 5-7 players in my viewSword65pf said:

Would've liked to see 4-5 starters keep their place as if we play a full reserve side and get battered 4-0 it doesn't do anyone any favours.1 -
Point taken, but we cannot claim that we will beat them, as most experts might predict a spurs winWSS said:

Our squad is stronger now so hopefully the changes are ones that give NJ. A headache selection wise going forward, when our injuries clear up with any more additions the competition is going to really heat up, which can only be a good thing you’d have thought.BigDiddy said:Sword65pf said:

The most disappointing thing for me will be if we concede an early goal. We’ll likely lose but let’s make them work for it.3

Bring back the song when we lost to Fulham in The FA Cup tonight I say
"The Carabao Cup who gives a f*** we're Charlton Athletic and we're going up"5 -
I don’t mind whether we go full strength or rotated, but Bell Chalobah and Grant shouldn’t be touching the pitch with their injury risks.0

Hopefully we wait until late in the game or after they score their 5th goal before that old favourite is sung.0 -

By running players into the ground so "legs were gone" at 32 instead of 35, and by not understanding sports science and medicine to its fullest extent because the knowledge we have today is so far beyond what they knew in the 70s it's a joke.golfaddick said:

Rest and rotation is crucial to peak athletic capacity these days. Go and compare full length match footage of any game from Clough's era to what we play today and how intense our style is under NJ - this current side, purely on the physicals, would run rings around even that title-winning Derby County side or whatever. They'd probably be at least as good technically, such is the advancement in the game, but comparing football style across eras is always nebulous. Not fitness though.2 -

Didn't we field our first choice eleven against Chelsea and then we lost 5-1... And then Bell got injured in that game as well.Southbank said:Those advocating a weaker lineup should watch what happened to Birmingham last night when they did just that.
Bell got injured every time he played wingback tho0 -
A much changed team for tonight. I think we’ll lose but I just hope we give a good accounting ourselves. Rob Apter to have a blinder and get picked up by Spurs before the window slams shut 🤣0
-
We could still get that - 5 keeping their place means 6 don't, that's probably qualifying as "quite a few." Plus if it means starts for players like Mesik, Collins, Ouma and Alli (for example) that's players who probably are good enough to be starters but can't displace the first choices yet.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

We're actually in a position to play a team thats "weakened" by not being last weekends starting 11 but not made up of youth prospects and perennial squad players.0 -
No stream tonight for those of us in deepest Romania ?0
