I have no idea why Okonkwo didn’t play. Why throw a young lad in to this match? That’s his confidence shot and fans now think he’s shite.
I think Jones was probably making a point

So according to NJ, he picked his two best keepers v Derby. Suggesting Brooks is better than Kaminski?

    Utterly ridiculous. He’s miles off
  • I thought looking at the big screen replay the first goal took a bit of a deflection upwards (from Lloydy)?…… which meant Brooksy couldn’t adjust in time and get enough of it to tip it over the bar……?

He was doing ok up until the first goal went in (which I thought was deflected) he’d made one really good save that the commentators tried to ignore as well.

Unfortunately, when the first one went in he just seemed to crumble. Given he had never played above National League before it was a proper baptism of fire. One that made no sense at all.

IMO Arthur starts and we go in 0-0 at HT.

He clearly meant that as a slight at Kaminski, and saying he is not part of the squad anymore, as opposed to actual talent levels.

Come on - that’s not even that hard a one to read between the lines.

Jim Stannard was mentioned last night for goalkeepers picking the ball out of the back of the net on 4/5 occasions on their Charlton debut
  • Does Brooks count as one of our 25 squad places because of his age?

We’d surely be better not having him & relying on the emergency loan system if so.

No point wasting a space on a non league standard keeper when we can easily bring in someone far better on loan, should we ever need to.

Think he’s getting too much grief here. Never made an appearance above National League and thrown in at the very deep end for his debut. Then two centre halves injured in the first fifteen minutes. Asiimwe had a stint at centre half, also played right and left back. Apter played right and left back. Danny Mac at centre half too. The defence was all over the shop personnel wise. The first goal took a slight nick of a defender. Cut the guy some slack, was an extremely difficult night for him. I’d be more concerned with the performances of others, Ouma and Alli for example, the latter who cost us 1.5m.

    Nowhere near ready.

I just don't understand the logic in the signing, surely anything Brooks is doing (sitting on the bench and looking out of his depth in the cup) could have been done by our U21 keeper.
Would have saved a small wage and a squad place.

Sure he may be getting too much grief, but the bottom line is he just wasn't up to it. They aren't mutually exclusive. I reckon a better keeper would have had a chance with three of those goals last night. Sure, we'd have still lost, but it wouldn't have been so humiliating.

I do feel sorry for him though and hope he bounces back - for his sake and ours. I don't think it's particularly fair making that his first team debut.

Here we go again writing a player off having only seen he perform once for 90 minutes against a multi million pound team full of internationals, welcome to Charlton Tiernan.

We haven’t had many academy keepers the last few years and the ones we have had have often been bought from other academies. Put them in the matchday squads and they can’t play in their age group teams which means others have to step up before they’re ready

Yeah counts as part of squad which is why this three keeper thing is fucking stupid. Just use the under 21 keeper

That's verrrrry generous. The ball has gone just over his head and through his hands. You seldom see goalkeepers letting those in.

A clubs 3rd choice keeper isn’t very good who would have thought

A clubs 3rd choice keeper who is young and inexperienced, who would have thought is what I would rephrase that too.

Not very good? He is a professional footballer, have some respect.

Not writing him off. Just wrong to play him for 90 in that game with that team in front of him

In some other jobs it would be close to constructive dismissal, setting up someone to do a job they have NO experience doing. Putting a newcomer into that game? Pretty classless I would say.

Below are just some of the comments about a certain keeper who went on to become a fixture in the PL and play for England. Not saying that Brooks will be good enough for us but keepers come under more scrutiny for a mistake or two than any other position on the pitch.

Really worried to be honest. Even on Saturday I thought he looked like he was "frightened to death"! Don't think he will "win" us many points. Get well soon Henderson!!!....PLEASE.

The concern is he is following the pattern that he has done every time he has got in the first team. A few good saves but a mistake costing us a goal every other game.

I really want him to do well for us but not sure he will be here after this season.

I just don't think it will happen for him at charlton, it may be mental thing but he does seem to have a mistake in him when playing for us.

You can't have a shaky mentally week goalkeeper and that's exactly what Pope is. Every cross that comes in I'm worried he's going to fumble it. Maybe too many things have happened at Charlton and he needs a fresh start somewhere?

Made a quality save in the first half and looked quite assured. First goal fired in through his hands and his confidence melted away. Wouldn’t write him off yet but still a way away from being able to challenge for a starting place.

Yes, I agree with you on that, it is on the generous side, I expect he'll get sharper with things like though and I do think he had a bit of an unlucky debut, a couple of deflections, poor cover in front of him for the 2nd goal...... although I do also think Ouma will get better at policing that mid-pen area...... and perhaps one shot where no-one put their body on the line and threw themselves in front...... but tbh my memory is a bit hazy on a couple of the goals....... mesmerized by Savio who is sooooo rapid from a standing start and looks great at close control at speed too.....

I was watching Brooksy during the GK warm-up and he has strong hands but I guess the sharpness will come with training and playing....

I do understand NJ putting him in last night, I think Brooksy needs first team game time quickly given Mannion is out for a bit and Thomas is in the revolving door so I guess last night was less risky than a league game. It reminded me of the Chelsea cup game where I just kept wishing we wouldn't let any more goals go in!

Baptism of fire .. overall think he done well not sure he could do to much with 4 of the goals but the header perhaps he will look back on and say could have done better … but the experience gained is second to none

if anyone should've played last night from Saturday's game then it should've been the keeper.....he's literally just joined us

We can’t expect him though to catch a ball every 4 days though…

It's not that Okonkwo was rested, he wasn't risked. Mannion has an injury and as we saw last night a bad injury to an important player at this point can leave you in real trouble. Brooks does have to get some games in him as well if he's going to sit on the bench and potentially come on in a Championship game. This match will have been a huge step up for him and he'll have learned from it

I think last night just confirmed to myself that a third keeper is pointless, and should be given to an under 21.

Remember, if your senior keepers are injured, under the rules you can sign a keeper on emergency loan, but right now Jones insists on having 3 senior keepers, so even if Okonkwo and Mannion were both out, we'd be forced to use Brooks.

    It's a waste of a squad space
