MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs. Preston North End - Saturday 29th August 2026 - 3pm Kick-Off

Charlton Athletic vs. Preston North End
Saturday 29th August 2026 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Tom Reeves

Introduction
Charlton's 100% start to the season came to a rather abrupt end on Wednesday evening, the beauty of Cup ties is that very occasionally, the unexpected will happen and seeing Spurs come out victorious must have been a delightful, and teary moment for their home faithful. It means that Charlton can now turn their attention, at least until January, to the true business of the 2026/27 which is of course the League campaign... Survival at the very least should remain the main focus come next May.

The Opposition
Name: Preston North End (21st) - Manager: Paul Heckingbottom
Ground: Deepdale
Previous League Result: Wolves 3-1 Preston

Heading down to South East London for the second game at the Valley this season will be Preston North End, who'll be making the long trip down the M6 ahead of Saturday afternoon - After all its been a summer of concern for fans of the Lilywhites, a lack of serious business in the transfer window (I'll come to that later), mixed with a poor end to the last campaign and visiting fans could be forgiven for having concerns about their Championship future.

Of course there is a lot of Football still to be played, yet whilst Charlton come into this fixture with three wins from four games, our visitors come into this clash with three defeats and one draw, the latter coming in the First Round of the League Cup, which resulted in a penalty shootout win over Huddersfield. Just two goals have been scored in the Championship so far to date, yet both those League fixtures ended in defeat with losses away at rivals Blackburn Rovers (2-1) on the opening day, and a 3-1 loss hosting relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.

Preston have dipped into the Transfer Market though and have spent money... Midfielder; Alfie Devine has joined from Tottenham for £6m, a no brainer of a move seeing he spent last term on loan at Deepdale, scoring eight goals in 45-games. Whilst Harry Clarke, no so fresh from a failed medical at Stoke, has ended up in the North West after a successful loan at the Valley last season. Clarke made his debut in last weekend's defeat, and played the last 30-minutes of yesterday's 4-0 defeat at home to Everton in the League Cup, so would be expected to make an appearance back in South East London this coming weekend.

In terms of head2head and this is where Preston should have their hopes up, they've won their last seven games over the Addicks, with our last win in this fixture coming in a 5-2 rout back in 2011 - Now would be a good time to put that ghastly stat to an end, but then we've been saying that for years about our neighbours

Charlton Team News
Its not been the greatest 24-hours for Addicks fans, with the transfer for Jesrun Rak-Sakyi hitting a bit of a giant roadblock, yet with a number of days before the Transfer Window closes, you'd hope that we have plenty of time to make further additions. We were today welcomed by the news of a new Contract for Kayne Ramsay, the Right-Back has committed to a new 4-year deal, but remains absent with his own injury.

Talking of injuries, and we're not even beyond August before they've decided to tap us on the shoulder with a friendly: "Remember me"... We've now got five Defenders absent through various injury, with Reece Burke, Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio joining the injury list - It means that there will be a reshuffle at the back ahead of this Saturdays match with 19-year old Ivan Mesik looking to make his debut, the Croat put in a valiant performance against Spurs and could either line up alongside Lloyd Jones at the heart of defence, or at Left-Back.

Okonkwu
McNamara - Jones - Mesik - Bell
Coventry - Chalobah
Grant - Carey - Campbell
Leaburn

Substitutes: Brooks - Costello - Asiimwe - Ouma - Mwamba - Knibbs - Mbick - Alli - Apter

I was literally yelling at my TV last night "He's neither 19 nor Croatian, at least get something right!"

But the commentator was right in that he was playing for Cheltenham Athletic.

I can see Ivan featuring a lot in match previews this season: will the youngster make his debut this week?

A one nil defeat after Wednesday nights debacle,  the players will be down in the dumps and the bench will be weaker.

I think it will bear the weight OK, now that Chuks is not sitting on it.

So after all the drama, Preston ended up being the club that signed a good RM before the weekend!

As annoying as yesterday was, I’m comforted by the fact that we only need to make one change to the starting lineup. We just can't afford any injuries or silly red cards during this busy period.

Especially as 1 or 2 of them probably won't be at the club by the time we play West Brom...

I’m pretty clam about this one. We will be too strong for them 3-1 and 3 points. Really need to build the points before the injuries build and our squad depth gets highlighted in a few weeks

    3goals seems a bit shellfish, I’d settle for 2😜

The injuries may affect our morale.

We need an aggressive set up so we can dominate Preston from the off.

Worried about our defence especially if we get any more injuries.

Preston lost their captain, Ali McCann, yesterday to a hamstring injury after he came on as a sub for 25 minutes.

4-1 Really think Preston are there for the taking and NJ did the right thing by resting nearly all the league starting 11. They will be refreshed and raring to go. Would like to see Leaburn and Grant score…
