Alan Mwamba Signs Long Term Contract

We need to ensure 2 things result from Alan Mwamba at Charlton Athletic.

1) We keep him long enough to assist our transition from lower quartile to upper half of the Champ.

2) When we do sell him, we generate a large enough fee to assist in our transition from upper half to upper quartile of the Champ.

He’s the Esse style player we can use to jump up the league you were talking about

Should start Wednesday, even if Chalobah is available let’s not risk him. Mwamba’s pace in CM could be ideal for a midweek game against players who’ve been playing every few days over the last few weeks.

What’s so impressive to me is he’s not a Shelvey or Gomez who we could throw in at 16/17, he wouldn’t have been ready. Huge credit to everyone involved in coaching, developing and believing in him.

Before signing pro for the first time in 2024 Steve Avory commented that Mwamba surprised him and Jason Pearce with how fast he progressed.

We’ll never keep all (any?) of the 14-16 year old stars, even in the PL and with Cat 1 (Arsenal lost one they poached from us to Man City only a year ago), so we’ve got to develop the others who might have the potential but need a little more time.

It was a huge call from Jones to pick Mwamba ahead of Doc, and a decision not every manager would have made.

Excited to see how Mwamba and others continue improving and impacting the first team.

I was told on good authority last season that he was a class above Ibby Fullah, which was not a criticism of the latter. He’s certainly looked it so far.

Gobsmacked by this young man's performance today !

Watched him in the U21s but he was a revelation when he joined the action this afternoon.

His skill, his enthusiasm and his energy was a joy to witness.

SO looking forward to his next appearance & to his progress in the squad.

Cat 1 won't keep the best 15/16 year olds with us. The money and resources of the giants will still be a massive draw.

Players like Mwamba getting first team Championship football at a young age will be a big tick though.

This ^ , Cat 1s still sign players from other Cat 1s it's just the fee is a bit more.

But showing these players at 15/16 that there's a genuine pathway to the first team could be enough to keep a couple of them from going elsewhere and ending up on the loan carousel.

We don't know how long it is.

It was signed a year ago, 3 years minimum, maybe 4 or 3 plus an option?

If it was just 3 years, so 2 years now, then we definitely need to extend it.

All we need now is a goal and he will stay to look every bit Charlton's wonder kid.

This is the next evolution - of we do well this season our squads valuation will go up 20 million.

That gives us options - and we have a board and a manager who knows how to leverage that.

I think this is what saddens me the most when these players leave Charlton for the bigger clubs... Its clear for everyone to see how few actually make it into the First Team at Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea the direct route... Stick around and if you're good enough, you'll get in our team and we're not the type of club to hold you hostage, so you'll get your move eventually.

I think Sarmiento is a great example at the moment, given then hype surrounding him at Charlton, and the mess we've been in of late, he surely would have been making his debut for us at 17-18... Six years later and he's settling at a club who (for now) are below us in the same Division - I almost wonder if there is a mixture of over-confidence that they can make it at big clubs when they leave, but feel there is a lack of self-belief as well, not confident at the same time... and think perhaps they won't make it in the game or there is the fear of injury or whatever, so take the safe route and make the life changing money from the Sport just in case.

I liked NJs quote on the academy players, felt like it was aimed at others who might be thinking of leaving and those who’ve left in the last few years. We’ve lost at least another two this summer before they were even old enough to sign pro.

“Let’s be honest it has been wonderful. It is part of my job, the academy produces, and we align, there is a pathway there. Anyone who is in our academy and wants to play first team football, if you are good enough you will be given the opportunity and that is the message.”

I think it's a really interesting thing to look at , of course the money for a lot of these players even if it's an academy deal is absolutely life changing.

I have no doubt as soon as he turned 16 Sarimento would have made his first team debut , I get the prestige of going to Benfica was a huge draw but he's just ended up spending the last 7 years bouncing from loan to loan and now at 24 finally seems to be settling down somewhere at Boro.

Whereas the message has always been regardless of manager and especially under NJ that if you impress at Academy level you'll get your chance. I'd be surprised if Mwamba is the only youngster we give a chance to this season, think we might see a couple more.
