John 'Fred' Saunders

As I reach the last handful of players to be included in volume 3 of 'The Valiant 1000', there remains a few about whom we have limited knowledge, so I am wondering if any of the sleuths on Charlton Life can unearth anything about Fred Saunders.

He was born in Maidenhead in 1943, but went to school at Plumstead. He was a tiny winger (5' 4'') and made one first team appearance at Middlesbrough in April 1963. He was given a free transfer in 1965 and allegedly signed for Tonbridge. After that… nothing!!. Does anyone know or remember him? Any info will be much appreciated.

@killerjerrylee have emailed you with a couple of newspaper articles which confirm he signed for Tonbridge and then moved to Cambridge United prior to having an extended trial with Bexley United.

He later played for Woolwich Town with Kevin Barry another ex Charlton player in the Metropolitan Sunday league.

I remember Johnny Saunders, he was a nippy little winger. Played a few games for the reserves in what was then the Football Combination and London Metropolitan league. Never knew his name was Fred. Programmes in those days for these games were usually a typed sheet given out at the turnstile so I doubt there's any record of appearances.
