  • It’s been a great start but we’re 24th for XG, 24th for shots on target and 24th for big chances created. That’s not sustainable, it’s not moaning to say that imo.
TC is in the finishing form of his life. Even if he has turned a corner, it's hard to imagine him scoring at the same rate all season.

Can we all zip it about this now. There's not much in it, but he's a few inches off. Stop it with the lines for the love of god
I just don’t see NJ going off on one without being sure of the facts. They have more data available to themselves than we do and he’ll look a right pollock if his comments were proved wrong. I’d trust him more than a couple of photos on here. Watching it back on the Sky footage it’s really tight but I’m sure Nathan has seen it from other footage we are not privy to.
I think NJ's reaction yesterday was OTT, probably because of the genuinely poor refereeing on Saturday. The TC disallowed goal wasn't a massive howler, it was a tight call either way, of the sort where they sometimes go for you, and sometimes they don't. Without a camera angle exactly level with TC, none of the lines people have drawn prove anything, either way.

VAR might have allowed it, but VAR would have disallowed goals we were given last season.

What do they say...any doubt, give it to the attacking player, which should have been the decision last night at the very least...
  • We’ve been very unlucky with refereeing decisions so far. West Ham pen, Stoke pen, Macca red, TC goal. All decisions that could have gone either way, and each time went against us.  Hopefully it evens itself up across the season

The two best passes [include] Carey to TC which he failed to control
It was a rubbish pass, as usual from the clueless Carey. Hit the back of TC's ankle. This is very common from Carey. He usually passes behind our player, causing him to check his run.

Biggest positive about tonight is we absorbed 75% possession and never really looked like we were going to concede, 1 mistake from Bindon letting in Smyth was the sum total of their clear chances.

Confused at the aggro towards the ref as well. Yes, it was a foul on Grant at the end, but it's red-tinted glasses that think Campbell was onside, he's clearly ahead of his marker on all the camera angles, close but clear. He checked his run a split second too late before accelerating past the CB.

    Looks onside.
No it doesn't! Draw a line between their two positions and tell me that doesn't to the far side of the pitch right near the half way line... he's a shoulder and head ahead. It's close, but I'd be raging if that was given and it was the other way around.
I mean using the halfway line as a guide.... These lines are parallel. Apologies for using a higher resolution image.
This argument therefore shows the nearest player plays him on.

Now if we change to using the pitch lines which should be more accurate:
Personally I wouldn't trust either of these either... just as I don't trust the other angles. You need the 3d imaging that is used by VAR to make a more certain - but still imperfect call here.

Btw the Blue line also shows pretty much the linos view here too... How is he determining with a player blocking his direct line of sight that TC is offside? I am pretty sure the rules still favour the attacker when there is doubt.
This is basically how flat-earthers happened
All these lines are very interesting but what I’d like to see is a close up of the linesman and where he’s looking.
If, as a linesman, you watch the player make the pass and then look at TC just a second later then you’re already going to see him offside.
On the few occasions I ran the line I used to watch the attacker and listen for the kick. That way you can make a better judgement.  However, I’ve always wondered how, in noisy stadiums,  this could be possible.  I’ve wondered if linesmen should have an earpiece connected the the ball. Maybe they have another method of watching the ball being played then looking at the runner and somehow imagining where he was 1 second earlier.
I’ve always wondered about this. This seems an opportune moment to ask for your thoughts on this.
I think it was marginally offside but the linesman can't possibly see both things at once unless he's got wonky eyes. TC's pace probably goes against him in marginal calls because quick thinking logic would suggest he couldn't get that far ahead of an attacker in a second or less.

Typical Curbs type performance after a loss, especially a heavy one.
Go again and ultimately stick a defib on the defensive unit. Get that clean sheet and start building again.

    What's not to like?
I don't remember any Curbs teams playing so negativity and without any goal threat. Certainly not in the Championship.

The thing is it’s not ‘slightly critical’ though is it. In some cases it’s a full on tantrum/melt down.

We’ve been decimated by injuries and are still on 11 points with an international break looming. Was it pretty? No. Do we want that kind of football to continue? No. Have we played like that all season so far. No.

Take a step back and have a look at the whole season so far. In patches we’ve played some great counter attacking football. Recently not so much
Season has been brilliant so far that's separate from last night's game of course. I'm not in full meltdown mode, but come on when you're the home team you have to take the game to the opposition a little.

Not after a 4-0 defeat against a side in the top 6. Steady the ship, build confidence, go again.

We're also 24th for long balls per match, which means we are, without question, the greatest footballing side in the Championship and perhaps the world.

Sounds like I made the right decision.
Ah yes, the venue made legendary by its huge central concrete pillar which means you can never see the whole stage. Wonderful stuff
Something like that would be a blessing down The Valley , won’t miss much from our slow organic progression as a football club
  • very poor last night, nothing to get behind far to many players to slow and just not up for the job in hand, whoever buys these players should be showed the door at once.

  • So much negativity, let’s have a reality check. After a shambolic performance last weekend the important thing is don’t lose, we had a similar meltdown v the spies last year and the very next game got battered by stoke. We’re playing with a makeshift defence, Mesik out of position and Binden getting up to speed, Im not gonna throw anyone under the bus when some of these players are brand new to the side. Transitioning the ball from defence to attack is a concern but with either Danny Mac and Ramsey coming back and mesik in his preferred role I’m pretty sure that will take pressure off the midfield 3….especially with Chalabar in the side. I’ve seen enough of Skipp to suggest he can play that role too when the midfield has more time.
200 mile round trip for me last night, didn’t get home until 2 but ultimately happy with the result if not the performance. If that tight offside call had gone our way we’d all be delighted with the win, like boro last season…proper smash and grab.
Note to QPR, you don’t win games by passing sideways….made me cross eyed. Point absolutely a fair result, onwards and upwards addicks, another long trip for me Saturday but mightily looking forward to it

That's exactly what happened with this pass ... it was just behind TC which caused him to check and the momentum had gone

Did you think Carey was clueless last season when he was top scorer ?
I understand that Sonny has gone from being invited to shagging the wives to doing everything wrong in the eyes of CAFC folk but that is bollocks to blame him for TC not controlling a pass.

Carey has lost his mojo which has surprised me after his powerful display against Cheltenham.
Scoring + assisting and only good keeping stopped him hitting a hat trick by the sub goalie.
Chalobah linked so well with Carey in that game and the ex  skilful England int (4 mins) is the big missing link for all the players and especially Sonny who has lost the ability to do the surging runs without being tackled.

I would like to see his stats from the first six months to the last six months and I don't just mean the league goals that have dried up. This is where coaches need to earn their money as I believed he would kick on again in the 10 position with a good service from the wingers in the 4-2-3-1 or what ever formation we play.

I can't believe the player who scored that cracking goal against Leicester who ran from the half way line with 4 defenders around him and then switching feet to score has disappeared.
All 8 goals were cracking goal so let's get that version back.
Confidence or fitness, it must be sorted as we need the lone striker and the '10' to share 20 goals from those positions.

Was fairly painful to watch but we’re punching well above our weight financially in the league and would much rather see us grind out a 0 0 against a side like QPR that helps our survival chances than a comfortable win against Mansfield or Bromley in league one.
So when do we worry then  ?? Are people happy if we survive this season but play like last night for the rest of the season  ?  If so, what about next season, seeing as I doubt our budget will be much different.

Will people really be happy sitting in freezing conditions in January and watch us get outplayed & outpassed, having no shots on target all game.

Golfie, Please don't fret mate, we will recover our dignity as soon as our real first team are back and fit, which we have been told by NJ will be after the international break.
We must appreciate this is only our second season back in the Championship, and we are doing pretty well so far this year, I know it all went tits up with Stoke, but last night was an improvement it must be said, and I am confident Saturday will be a whole lot better.
So chill mate, everythings  on track...

Were people happy being outplayed and well in the bottom half of League One, which was the situation before Jones was appointed?

West Ham pen while unlucky was a fairly clean cut pen going off current rules. TC looks offside but could have been given on another night I guess.

Don’t know why we bother playing the games really. Maybe we just all show our bank accounts at the start of the season. Most money are Champions and least money bottom, an others fit in between.  A you’d honestly rather watch a season of this shit, rather than be entertained and win games.  You are aware that watching football is supposed to be a pleasurable leisure activity.

We got our old Charlton back last night, unfortunately nobody wanted this one back.

I think a lot of people would worry more if we hadn't just seen our team go away to West Ham and win not even 3 weeks ago. Or seen us get an excellent point at West Brom a week ago. Or seen us be top of the league with 3 wins from 3 a week and a half ago. If you're going extrapolate out last night's performance to the end of the season then I'd suggest it's only fair you include the other results we've had, the best of which we achieved when we had fewer injuries. If we continue getting just under 2 points a game into January then yes, I expect people will be quite happy. You won't, but people will.

Pretty sure football is a results driven industry, I don’t go to games to be entertained, I go to see my team get results. Couldn’t care less how, off someone’s arse in the 95th minute after being outplayed will do

I actually thought TC tried to play the pass with his right when he should have let the ball go across his body and taken it on his left. Thought it was a decent pass and TC made the wrong call. At least how I saw it and the guy next to me in the AC Stand.

I don't expect us to become barcelona this season but once the likes of Koumetio and Ramsay are back we will have more pace in the back line and will be less need to sit deep. Ramsay and Edwards will also provide more attack from full back than 2 centre halfs. Chalobah will add more craft from midfield. Thats the positives. The negatives - jones is a 'don't lose' first manager, skip is a clone of docherty, ouma ?? and we have only added Grant and a few bit parts to the attack when we were crying out for 1st choice upgrades there. It is what it is and we may all feel a bit different after Pompey but honestly, last night told us its going to be a very similar story to last year and the novelty of being a plucky promoted team is gonna wear off. Having a half empty stadium doesn't give us much grounds as fans to complain that we should be served up much else.

I would be inclined to be more concerned if we have a repeat on Saturday in terms of possession and how we approach the game.  No disrespect to Pompey, but QPR’s game is all about possession football because in terms of talent, they’re a better team.  Pompey (should) have less of the ball on Saturday and we (should) be able to have a bit more of a say with the ball.

WBA played a similar style and the game was very much like it was last night, save for how we were able to get more of footing once we made the subs against them last week.

McNamara will be back to provide natural balance at RB.  Skipp and Coventry would’ve had more time together having come through last night playing for 80 mins and 90 respectively.  It was another game for Bindon and Jones to try and build a partnership

The negatives are we don’t know if Leaburn will be fit, which may mean Mbick plays the whole 90, or the majority of it - it’s a big ask.  We still look a little light with whoever fills in at 10, and don’t have that RW really sorted, but they’re mid to long term problems and there’s not much else we can do other than to hope something/some combination clicks

I’d say if the game pans out like last night, there’s more cause for frustration etc.  But I am positive we will see more about us on the ball on Saturday

hope you're right but pompey gave us a 'seeing to' at the valley last season - big game which will tell us a lot about the season ahead
