I would be inclined to be more concerned if we have a repeat on Saturday in terms of possession and how we approach the game.  No disrespect to Pompey, but QPR’s game is all about possession football because in terms of talent, they’re a better team.  Pompey (should) have less of the ball on Saturday and we (should) be able to have a bit more of a say with the ball.

WBA played a similar style and the game was very much like it was last night, save for how we were able to get more of footing once we made the subs against them last week.

McNamara will be back to provide natural balance at RB.  Skipp and Coventry would’ve had more time together having come through last night playing for 80 mins and 90 respectively.  It was another game for Bindon and Jones to try and build a partnership

The negatives are we don’t know if Leaburn will be fit, which may mean Mbick plays the whole 90, or the majority of it - it’s a big ask.  We still look a little light with whoever fills in at 10, and don’t have that RW really sorted, but they’re mid to long term problems and there’s not much else we can do other than to hope something/some combination clicks

I’d say if the game pans out like last night, there’s more cause for frustration etc.  But I am positive we will see more about us on the ball on Saturday
hope you're right but pompey gave us a 'seeing to' at the valley last season - big game which will tell us a lot about the season ahead
It will still be tough, and they’ll be up for it after doing the double over us last season.  Fingers crossed we’ve got something in us
  • Highlight of the otherwise turgid evening was probably the new hot dog instructions in the West Stand bar. As NJ says, good to get the basics right…

The lack of onions must be especially painful for you.

Was fairly painful to watch but we’re punching well above our weight financially in the league and would much rather see us grind out a 0 0 against a side like QPR that helps our survival chances than a comfortable win against Mansfield or Bromley in league one.
So when do we worry then  ?? Are people happy if we survive this season but play like last night for the rest of the season  ?  If so, what about next season, seeing as I doubt our budget will be much different.

Will people really be happy sitting in freezing conditions in January and watch us get outplayed & outpassed, having no shots on target all game.
I don't expect us to become barcelona this season but once the likes of Koumetio and Ramsay are back we will have more pace in the back line and will be less need to sit deep. Ramsay and Edwards will also provide more attack from full back than 2 centre halfs. Chalobah will add more craft from midfield. Thats the positives. The negatives - jones is a 'don't lose' first manager, skip is a clone of docherty, ouma ?? and we have only added Grant and a few bit parts to the attack when we were crying out for 1st choice upgrades there. It is what it is and we may all feel a bit different after Pompey but honestly, last night told us its going to be a very similar story to last year and the novelty of being a plucky promoted team is gonna wear off. Having a half empty stadium doesn't give us much grounds as fans to complain that we should be served up much else.
"skip is a clone of docherty". Not at all similar. Skipp has more football in his big toe than Docherty in his whole body. Look how Coventry has improved without Docherty confusing our midfield.

"only added Grant"?  When I suggested trying to sign Grant at the end of last season I was ridiculed because we could not possibly afford his "immense" wages. He is a good signing who improves the first team, but is being asked to do too much as present.

I would rather have a "don't lose" manager than one who is happy to lose so long as we have a ball-juggling winger who entertains the crowd with tricks.

We do not have the money for "first class" upgrades forward. What money we do have is more effectively spent on upgrading the goalie, the defence and the midfield. We have done all that.

Sichenje, Ouma and Nkeng are cheap punts who may or may not pay off. Judge them at the end of the season. Mesik is a cheap punt who, and it is early days yet, looks like he will comfortably be worth what we paid for all four by the end of the season.

You are right that it will likely be a similar story to last year. And for every year thereafter, until our present owners invest more or we find some new investors.

28% possession 0 shots on target couldn't string more than 3 passes together, but you're classed as miserable and told to grow up for being slightly critical, deary me.
The thing is it’s not ‘slightly critical’ though is it. In some cases it’s a full on tantrum/melt down.

We’ve been decimated by injuries and are still on 11 points with an international break looming. Was it pretty? No. Do we want that kind of football to continue? No. Have we played like that all season so far. No.

Take a step back and have a look at the whole season so far. In patches we’ve played some great counter attacking football. Recently not so much
Season has been brilliant so far that's separate from last night's game of course. I'm not in full meltdown mode, but come on when you're the home team you have to take the game to the opposition a little.
That squad not capable of that, if the did they would get thumped.

You wouldn't be happy if we won the Champions League final 3-0, so forgive me for not being overly bothered what you think.
Would probably clash with tea time

  • Well, I quite enjoyed last night - the players gave it their all, kept a clean sheet and chalked up a decent point - we started well, had the excitement of TC taking his 'goal' with ease and from that moment it changed and we really took it to them until the half-time whistle went....... and also a few times in the 2nd half.
Not sure why the sub wasn't made before the half, JR-C was ready to go there for quite a while... and I thought Sonny was odds on to not come out for the 2nd half as I hadn't noticed Miles was a bit off it.
Glad they didn't score from Mesiks attempted pass out from the back or from the Coventry/Bindon thing...... saved them from getting big pelters....... on here anyway, maybe not from NJ though....
I don't know what's going on with Knibbsy, he's clearly down the pecking order...... I felt sorry for him last night as he watched the subs being made yet again........ apart from his song which gets sung every game, I can't understand why he's still here and waiting for a chance..... I can't fathom why he doesn't try to ply his trade elsewhere and get proper game time.

Depends on the opposition. Sometimes we can.
  • We’ve been very unlucky with refereeing decisions so far. West Ham pen, Stoke pen, Macca red, TC goal. All decisions that could have gone either way, and each time went against us.  Hopefully it evens itself up across the season
They haven't evened up across my lifetime so I'm not holding my breath.

If QPR were under the illusion 14 spot on the table was theirs by some god given right...
Admittedly it has taken us 4 matches to fine tune our 0:0, but (Norwegian) "Stan Bowles, Rodney Marsh, Gerry Francis, Sue Lawley (she worked for the BBC near) Your boys have taken a hell of a lesson at the valley "

the through ball to TC was well weighted i'll give him that and whilst i can't claim to have seen him play loads of games, the ones i have, he's looked like a very limited water carrier to me - again, hope i'm wrong but a gifted footballer he is not -  a hard working good egg maybe with marginally more football in him than docherty - nowhere near a top premier league league footballer and a pretty limited championship one
  • Such a strong league. The only "minnow" historically is Lincoln. Tough watch last night, but good atmosphere, thought QPR support decent and we made a lot of noise in in a pretty dull game. With return of more first teamers we will be less defensive. TC ran himself into the ground - deserves more support!

    You really are so boring.
  • People seem to have completely forgotten the really good performances against Preston, derby and West Ham and now assume that all of our injuries are permanent and we’ll play like we did against QPR for the rest of the season.

If we lose tomorrow, I give it five minutes before someone says Jones has lost the dressing room.

Heartbreaking. Although I imagine adding onions to the mix here would require a few days training and a 100 page guide.

If we lose? It will happen if we concede a goal. N. Jones and L. Jones will have fallen out, Campbell is out for the season and we are talking to Russell Martin to take over.

Great point. I’m assuming TC was onside so we should have won 1-0!
Look at the league table and take a breath.
    UTA!
Take a look at all the empty seats and ask yourself why? And the answer is not Sky TV or a midweek fixture, it is Jones-ball tactics!
I think you may find its the ticket prices. Jones tactics didn't stop 6k fans going to Spurs.
The low gate is a combination of several things,1)The football is not a great watch and many people just wont want the traumas of going twice in one week.2) The travel situation is well up there with reasons not to go,I live in medway,so far this season (I did not go on wednesday )each game has taken me over an hour to get to.I am fortunate enough to have a pre booked place to park, but many supporters dont, and this combined with the sometimes difficult journey will not entice them to brave the traffic when they can see the game on tV.  3) you have loads of other games on TV,how many would have turned our game off(I didnt) and said sod this I will watch Liverpool v Atletico instead. 4) non season ticket holders c£35.00 a pop,2 home games in 4 days £70.00 plus the add ons.we need a good points return from the next 2 games, and remain top 6,after the international break, maybe some causalties returning and things will look rosy ,and we can see a big improvement in the way we play.

I think Luke is talking some BS there... Surely if NJ wanted to deflect, it would have been after losing 4-0 to Stoke. And he'd have had every right to rant about that ref.

Was going to say Dion and the Belmonts, but there are limits. FWIW (not much) I thought it was a good point in that it stopped saturdays debacle from becoming the start of a losing run. The big problem for me is holding the ball, Chalobah is a big miss, the way it went on Wednesday meant everybody had to do an awful lot of running, TC must have lapped the World twice. I normally detest international breaks, but the one coming up can't come quick enough.
