Add another 5m to Mbick’s price tag for that one.

Makes you wonder how we've kept Mbick for so long?

Was he a late developer? Did we have a very big box to hide him?

One of the things I enjoy most at Charlton is when an exciting academy prospect breaks into the first team. Especially when they're extremely highly rated. Seems these days those with the greatest potential to go to the very top, like a Gomez or a Parker, are poached long before we even get to see them near our u21s let alone first team. Appreciate thats the nature of the game these days and its not just our academy getting raided regularly but its so frustrating. If we did get Cat 1 status at least me may be rewarded a little more for our efforts in developing these players.

Personally, I don't think you blame the young player. Suddenly earnings potential increases dramatically. You can't blame the buying club for trying. It's the system. The compensation package needs to change. If academies like ours become unprofitable and decide to wind down, it can't be good for the game long term.  How that compensation is structured is another debate. Perhaps an initial sum based on future factors like prem appearances, England caps, future transfer fees but they all run into complications.

Chizaram Ezenwata has just scored for Chelsea U21s vs. Bristol Rovers in the EFL Trophy.

And another one. Even worse, he’s gone to Palace. Probably hit double figures for the last 3 years assuming there’s a few who haven’t been mentioned on social media.

I know there’s a lot of work to do to get it, but securing category one for the academy has to be the biggest priority now. The amount of talent leaving us recently is alarming. However, this is what happens when the money within the game is all held at the top so all these Premier League clubs can virtually do whatever they want. They don’t need to spend the time developing youngsters from U10 or however young because they can poach the best ones when they are 15 or so. It really is a shame and a mess.

Be interesting to look in a few years time to see how well these defectors have done in the game.
