My Dad (a Charlton fan) was disabled (MS) so had an automatic with hand controls fitted as couldn't properly use his legs.  For years drove a Renault R8.  First car I think with push button auto gear change on the dash.  Same colour as this one.

There was an outing of vintage cars here where we live in France yesterday and bringing up the rear was an R8 in the same colour, but in full rally trim!

    Neither Mum or Dad drove
Taxi duties were down to my Uncle Ted.
He had a Vauxhall Viva and latterly an Opel Ascona.

Had a Mk2 Zodiac when I was younger and we used to pile in and go to Margate Friday/Saturday.
Did it one Bank Holiday weekend and stopped at Laughing Water to top up with fuel and check the oil and water.
Bonnet Sprung open on the Medway Bridge and bent over the roof.
Had to take the bonnet off and jump up and down on it to straighten it up.
Brilliant days and nights now unfortunately long gone.

    Jolly boys outing?
  • My father changed his 2 door Morris Minor Series 2 for a 4 door Austin 1100 when I was born. That car rusted badly, and was replace by a Renault 4TL, the first car I remember, something like this one. Definitely the classic I would buy for a childhood nostalgia trip. When that R4 was replaced, I remember the sense of loss, like if a pet dies... It had a bench seat at the front, I remember 6 people crammed into that car, with me in the middle at the front  :#

That was replaced by a Renault 12TL, then a Mk2 Ford Escort 1.3L, then a Citroen Visa Super E, another charismatic small French car.

Then an Austin Maestro 1.6L, followed by an Austin Maestro 1.3 Special, which became my first car until it was written off after someone in a Toyota MR2 drove into the back of it on the Holloway Road...

My Dad had a Renault 12 in that yellow colour. When he moved on to newer car Mum took it on and it was the first car I drove once I passed my test. The R12 was a pretty bulky shape from what I remember and being custard yellow it would really stand out nowadays but it just looked normal back then!
My parents changed the R12 for an Escort as my mother was learning to drive, and found the 12 too heavy to drive. The steering and clutch I think were both very heavy.

The RWD Escort was a lot easier to drive, and a popular choice for driving instructors.

My Dad was a Cortina man, during my younger days.
    Starting with the Mark 2:
(Not our actual car, but identical to it)

    Mark 3:
(Not our actual car, but identical to it)

    Mark 4:
(Not our actual car, but identical to it)

    Mark 5:
(Not our actual car, but identical to it)

They all ended up with the same smell of old petrol. Not sure of that was a Cortina thing, or because my Dad ruined so many clutches!😄

On the Mark 5, he went through so many clutches, that his regular garage gave him free clutches for the remaining lifespan of the car.😆

I learnt to drive in a Mark 3 Cortina. These days driving instructors all seem to use the smallest cars they can find.
they didnt have to scrape through huge cars parked on both sides of the roads everywhere.
  • Ones that immediately spring to mind:
    Hillman Super Minx
    VW Variant
    Vauxhall Ventora

Thanks for posting this - Im a bit surprised there havent been more of these.
I bought a very cheap 1600E (BMP589H) from a bloke in Slough who had used it as a donor car for trim and badges but it still ran ok even though it looked as though it had been shot several times. The gear lever came off in my hand on the way back down the M4.
If yours smelled of petrol you  were lucky. Mine started to absolutely stink while me and Mrs Idle were honeymooning in Devon. Eventually traced it to a corned beef and pickle sandwich that had mouldered beyond belief in the boot. No idea how it got there, it might not even have been mine.
