Visiting from New York – First Charlton Match at The Valley (Oct 10)

Hi everyone,

I’m visiting London from New York next month and will be attending Charlton vs Bristol City on Saturday, October 10th. It’ll be my first visit to The Valley and my first Charlton match.

I’m coming on my own and have booked Club 1905 hospitality, but I’d love to meet some Charlton supporters before the match and get a proper feel for the matchday experience. Are there any particular pubs or places where supporters usually meet before the game, or would anyone be up for meeting for a pint beforehand?

This is my second trip to London. I’m typically a Tottenham supporter and have previously been to matches at Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham. I’ll also be at the NFL game at Tottenham on Sunday, so I’m making a sports weekend out of the trip.

Looking forward to visiting The Valley!

Enjoy. But remember that it is a 12:30 pm kick off. That means to squeeze the most out of Club 1905, you'll need to be getting in there around 10:30 am at the latest. I think, for example the Royal Oak will be open at 10:00 am, so you wouldn't get much time in there before you had to move on.

would it not be best to go after the game, as it is an early kick off.

Enjoy your trip. My biased view of those clubs stadiums..

West Ham.  Awful, soulless football stadium. They used to be a proper football club, but they sold out and swapped a unique, traditional old stadium for an athletics meet. One of the worst football experiences in the UK you can go to.

Tottenham - If you like modern stadiums you love Spurs ground.  Very well designed modern stadium built to lure you into spending huge amounts of money.  It's not really for me but that is because I am weird on things like that and prefer the piss stained tradition of an old UK stadium far more!

Chelsea - don't mind Stamford Bridge.  Decent atmosphere last time I went but that was a very long time ago!

Charlton - beautiful mix of old and newer.  Hidden amongst Victorian houses like a stadium really should be.  Atmosphere can be decent, but very dependent on the game.

Given an early kick off, you are best off seeing if the museum will be open beforehand and going there, to learn our history and why Charlton are the best club in the country as well as picking up a bucket hat, some signed pics etc.
@Henry Irving will be able to tell you.

As others have said, since it's 12:30 kickoff, there won't be many in the pubs on before the match. But there'll be people hanging about after. The fan zone usually opens at 10:30 outside the West Stand, so that could be a good place to go.

After you're done mingling with Charlton fans after the game, you might also consider taking the short trip down to Greenwich village. There's Greenwich Market, Greenwich Park, the Cutty Sark, the Maritime Museum and riverside pubs like The Trafalgar.
  • The Charlton museum at the ground is normally open on a Friday, that is a must to visit.

Do you have a hard shot ? If so please bring your boots, you might get on the subs bench.
