London Heat Main - Bexley, Greenwich, Lewisham & more

Coming soon to boroughs near us? Pie in the sky or a great idea?

https://londonheatmain.co.uk/project-overview

WHAT IS THE LONDON STRATEGIC HEAT MAIN?

The London Strategic Heat Main is the UK’s first large-scale heat transmission system – infrastructure which has existed for decades across Europe and Asia. It will transport surplus low-carbon heat, initially from Cory’s facilities at the Riverside campus in Belvedere, Bexley to local heat distribution networks across London that will provide heating and hot water to homes and businesses.

The London Strategic Heat Main is a project of national significance that aims to provide London with energy that is secure, affordable, clean and local.

  • It seems like a great idea, dunno how Corey's generate that much heat but AI seems to confirm

A waste heat study commissioned by the Greater London Authority identified the site as the largest source of high-grade waste heat in Greater London. [1, 2]
    Key Figures & Delivery
    • Total Heat Available: Up to 3 TWh annually, which is equivalent to the entire annual heat demand of the City of London plus half of Westminster.

    • Home Equivalent: Capable of warming between 300,000 to 650,000 homes once the full transmission infrastructure is active.

    • Delivery Temperature: High-grade heat output at 90°C (194°F) and above, meaning older buildings can utilize the thermal energy without requiring extensive internal upgrades.

I took a very good Open University Course 40 years ago (T101) which explored the use of local heat and power systems using 'waste' heat from local businesses/factories etc, to provide the energy.
Seems there was neither the money nor interest in developing them and as manufacturing industry declined, there was an ever decreasing availability of 'surplus energy'

It's where our rubbish goes. Down the river in barges to be burnt.
  • If you wanted to build a whacking great AI datacenter in Charlton Riverside, for example, and lots of people were complaining about that, it could be an excellent way to address the environmental aspects of those complaints.

@Weegie Addick the incinerator near the Toolbox already does this: https://selchp.com/

Thanks, Ali, but I don’t think “sending energy to the National Grid” is quite the same as this proposal?

Isn’t that the waste facility that keeps catching fire?
