I was pissed off by this tweet at the time but I'm even more pissed off by it now. We're celebrating incompetence and there seems to be an attitude that any tiny thing we do well is cause for great celebration. I'm not saying don't enjoy the good moments but the bar needs to be higher. We can't be celebrating having only had three shots on target all season
It sounds like club Blake humor,  they know the team is bloody awful so making a joke of it.

Team has barely had any investment…. We have enough on our plates hoping the owners invest in the men’s team. I feel sorry for the women’s team and supporting staff. They’ve been hung out to dry a little bit, and will struggle to get a point at this rate.

January is a real test for the owners. Liverpool proved last season that with some investment it’s possible to turn your season around and pick up points. The benefit of the league being so small and unpredictable is that you can escape relegation in the second half of the season even if you start poorly.

I genuinely don’t think all hope is lost but the team need some help

    Second half wasn't acceptable.

First half we competed well but after half time that was a really worrying performance.

Would have been nice if KH came over and acknowledge the fans at the end.

Considering our form and that second half performance.

I went to the game today. It was awful, adults vs kids almost. Absolutely no attacking threat or ability to hold on to the ball.

All the noises from Carter at the last meet the directors or whatever it's called I thought they were going to have a real proper tilt at this and it just feels like such a bits and pieces setup.

I think Neville gets cards from her reputation.

She was very far off the pace on Wednesday. Missing three games has lost her match fitness.

I can't believe they posted this but nothing about the Cissoko challenge. No mention of her being in agony and needing to be helped off the pitch. Nothing about what should have been a red, no outrage, just a mention of a sub. Absolutely ridiculous to just let that go, Hills is usually pretty calm post-match but I'd like to see a little bit of pushback from the club about the bad decisions we're getting against us week on week

I sat in the middle with the Brighton fans, since the view from the corner we were given was so bad.

After enduring a woman, whose seat was well away for me, complaining to a steward for 15 minutes about me being sat there, I got chatting to the Brighton fan beside me.

He told me that he was seriously worried about relegation this season and that he didn't know where the goals were going to come from. I told him not to worry as he would see plenty tonight and bottom spot was going to be ours.

I was never expecting much from this season, but getting smashed by four goal margins twice by a lower mid-table team is extremely worrying. There's no doubt in my mind that we are going to concede double figures in at least one game this season. If we're lucky enough to scrape a draw in the league at any point, it's going to feel like a win. The thought of winning a game seems impossible, but pulling off such a feat is likely to feel like winning the league.

I don't blame the players for any of this as they're doing their best. I blame the board.

It was clear that an improvement was needed in the mid-season transfer window last season, but they did nothing. I thought that slipping into third and barely getting promoted would be a wake-up call and naïvely I believed them when we were told that they were going to make a go of it this season.

Unfortunately, it seems that they're planning to be relegated and hope that we bounce straight back next season. Well, with only one guaranteed promotion slot, that's not going to be easy.

We made wholesale changes at the end of last season and signed what 12 or14 new players, I have to wonder what level of football they were playing before coming to us.  Would we have been worse off sticking with most of last seasons team.

It was really, really disappointing. Brighton fans who I work with have been very disappointed so far this season but they absolutely played us off the park today.

We didn’t make wholesale changes though did we? We started today with 5 players who were with us last season and brought on 5 more. In fact, we only subbed new players so by the end we had 10 players from last season on the pitch and collapsed in injury time. Skeels likely would have played if she wasn’t injured, so would Newsham. The problem we have is we couldn’t make enough changes and the ones we did make aren’t of a high enough level. These new players are of a higher level, just not high enough.

Pretty much all the players we released are now playing at WSL2 level again and with the exception of Bradley are either playing for the bottom teams or not getting much of a game. Whitehouse, N’Dow, Lobato and Hutton are low end WSL level and Flannery will grow into it but she’s barely 21. We needed some big signings in key areas and we didn’t get them but I really don’t think we’re doing better with Emma Bissell and Karin Muya

AS1987 has summed it up. We look like a League One team playing a Premier League team every week, and I don't think any of the players in our squad would get in the first eleven of any other WSL team right now - at most, the players Garrymanilow mentions would be squad options at other clubs (and that itself is a damning indictment of our summer signings). Nathan Jones talked about the men's team being ruthless, and maybe Karen Hills should have been more ruthless too: I get that it's tough to break up a team that has just won promotion, but none of Mason, Kenney, Fitzgerald, Siber or Humphrey look anywhere near good enough to deserve a contract to play at this level. Then again, that would require more investment than the board were willing to make.

I'm annoyed that Neville sold herself so completely for their first goal - with the experience and quality she has, she should know better. I'm annoyed that in the build up to their second, Korhonen and Neville half-stopped their left winger but didn't finish the job, so she could poke the ball into the box to put them through for a carbon copy of the equaliser. I'm annoyed at the timing of that goal, that we couldn't at least hold out until half-time at 1-1. I'm annoyed that we had about two or three touches in their box in the entire second half, one of which was Hutton heading it on for an offside Azzaro, and that our only shot (I think) was that N'Dow swipe that was so feeble she was able to retrieve it herself by the touchline. I'm annoyed that every other team, as well as having more quality on the ball, looks much more eager to win it back than we do, so each time we get possession you can count down the seconds until we lose it again, and then we have to hope that they make a mistake somewhere in order for us to get it back.

Sorry for having a bit of a rant. But this season is going to be embarrassing (if it isn't already), and I find it hard to believe that we'd have much chance of competing for promotion from WSL2 next season at this rate.

With respect if the owners have decided not to invest overly much on the men’s team, why would anyone expect anything different for the women?

It’s especially irritating because the other promoted teams are doing quite as badly ( and palarse are holding their own). Yes I know we finished third in the playoffs but we’re also top at one point

It’s true that we were top but that was always an almost impossible travesty. We were the worst best team imaginable and we were always flying by the seat of our pants (and I loved it). Palace have signed the likes of Beth England and Lexi Lloyd-Smith and Birmingham were throwing round insane fees even last season. The only chance we have is that a team completely collapses and we nick enough wins to get into the playoff relegation spot and win another shootout

We were top all season until the final week or so.
The thing is, the team had completely outperformed expectations until the last stretch where we fell apart. The fact that we got promoted was an amazing achievement, but the way the season ended made it feel a bit disappointing that we had to go through the playoffs. But the fact is, if investment last year dictated who went up, it should’ve been Birmingham, Palace and Newcastle, so the achievement was excellent.

What’s disappointing this year is that we seem to have either
    a) completely underestimated how much investment it would take to survive in the top flight, or
    b) understood the investment required, but were unwilling to make that investment.
(I’m inclined to think it was maybe a bit of both.)

As someone else mentioned, our end of season collapse last year was due, in no small part, to being outspent in the mid season transfer window. All the other bigger hitters in the division improved significantly while we picked up players that were no better than what we already had. We then proceeded to do pretty much the same thing in the summer. Granted, some of the incomings were an upgrade on some of our outgoings, but that would only have been sufficient if we were still in WSL2 and planning on having another crack at promotion. Even then, and even if we’d made the same signings, I’m not sure we’ve improved enough to challenge for the WSL2 title because, as mentioned, other clubs are improving quicker and more significantly than us.

Last year, we were all talking about how, with 3 teams going up, it was the best chance in ages to break into the WSL. What I think most of us didn’t expect is for us to, once promoted, pretty much surrender and apparently accept relegation as our fate immediately, and recruit so badly. I can’t honestly believe that the board thought this squad would be competitive in the WSL. The gulf in quality is just so huge, it beggars belief. During today’s game, I lost count of the number of times we tried to pass the ball around and ended up giving the ball away within about 10 seconds due to a dreadful loose pass, a lack of ball control or, sometimes, the ball just rebounding off of one of our players. Last year we were often tough to watch, but in some ways I think we’re worse now.

I had real hopes that we’d be able to somehow nick a few points here and there this year, but I just can’t see us getting many results. Bear in mind that we’ve lost all 5 games, but we’ve only played 1 of the really big sides. If we’d played Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Utd and Spurs, you’d think we were never expected to pick up points there. But apart from Man City, we’ve only played the teams we should’ve been hoping to compete with. Of course, teams we might have thought we had a chance against like Liverpool and Not-Millwall have, as mentioned, recruited ambitiously, taking them out of our reach. The irony is that our best result of the season was only getting beaten 1-0 by Man City. (And the disappointing thing about that game is that Man City recognised how poor we are and put out a second string side.)

We have had some crappy luck too. Injuries, sendings off (and non-sendings off for the opposition) haven’t helped.
But unfortunately, and I say this with true respect and admiration for the women pulling on the Charlton shirt, our players are not WSL quality.
They showed last year they can compete at the level below, but we needed a lot more to have any chance against the bigger sides.

I hope they keep fighting and I really hope they prove me wrong and start getting results, but I’m wondering where we go from here if the club aren’t willing to invest sufficiently to give us a chance at the top table.

I’m a bit surprised in the lack of investment in the men’s team after what was being said at the end of last season. Unfortunately the decisions that have been made are having a knock on effect to the women.

There is WSL TV money which is the budget for the women's team.

What I find shocking is the pass accuracy rate (69%) from yesterday's game. Passing out from the back and then thumping the ball up the pitch to nobody is clearly not working. Why are Karen and the coaches persisting with it?

Budget never changed for both men’s and women’s teams .. the men’s was increased from previous year as reported and  the women i
did hear a figure of around 3/4 fir recruitment mill not sure how accurate that is but would seem pretty good ….

It's something players revert to when they can't play any other way. I don't think it's a coaching thing, Hills is constantly screaming 'passes!' when we do get the ball and trying to encourage them to calm down with it but they get forced into cul-de-sacs and panic. We don't have midfielders who can play on the half-turn and receive the ball from each other. Flannery is decent with the ball but she needs it played into her when she's facing forward and on a few occasions yesterday she got the ball with her back to goal and turned into trouble. EvE and Davidson are both spoilers more than anything else and they can't knock the ball around the midfield. We send the ball out wide to Hutton when we can but we often get pressed at the back because teams know we want to send it down the line so most of the time we have to skip out the midfield, send it up for a header which we do often win, and then get picked off at the second ball. Lobato is the only one who consistently tries to put the ball into a useful space but it's difficult when you're getting pressed and don't have an outball. Any pass into the middle is just starting a turnover

If they completely underestimated what it would take then that is pretty poor as they had warning signs last season.

Liverpool finished 2nd bottom and battered us in the FA Cup, although they only scored late in extra time.
Leicester finished bottom by a mile and battered us in the play off game and we won because Whitehouse had the game of her life.

Didn't really look like scoring against the two worst teams in the WSL last year. So just from that i'd have thought it was fairly obvious we'd struggle this year, so i think it's simply down to the owners lack of investment.
