Just popped outside my office in Eastcheap, literally bumped into Richard Rufus, what a nice fella, had a good chat with him. He is very unassuming, takled about Charlton's current plight, its obvious talking to him he loves the club. This has made my week!

Rufus another Charlton legend, such a shame injury ended his career. Up there with Super Clive, Kinsella, Deano and Powell for my fave CAFC players
One performance which really stands out for Rufus was away at Spurs in his first game back after ligament injuries. He was awesome, there was one last ditch challenge that was immense considering he had been out for so long!0 -

often wonder how good Rufus could have been.
im sure had he been abe to play on for a few seasons he would have got an England call.
Still the loudest i have ever celebrated a goal--- "rufusssssssssssssssssssssssss Rufusssssssssssssssss" Wembley a life time ago.0 -
A great loss to us and the game of football in general, both as a player and a person.......I feel sure he was destined for much bigger things, whether in an Addick's shirt or elsewhere.

He has a property portfolio so was up here dealing with that, thought I saw him before, will now keep an eye out and extend the invite when I see him again!0

When you consider that Anthony Gardner won an England cap, Rufus must have been very close before his injuries.0

The choker is that Rufus is still only 35 and 18 months younger than Christian Daily.
Could still be playing for us if not for injury.0 -

Very true- And just so unassuming- I chaired a Q&A with him and his reply when asked about that tackel was along the lines of. " Well, I had to test my injury"
A true Charlton legend and the thought of him warms my heart more than nearly any other Charlton player ever....0 -
His mum was sitting behind me at Wembley. She got chatting to my mum. Said it was her first football match!

Richard was the England U21 captain at one time, how he didn't get a senior cap i will never know, I mean, what weaknesses did he have? And as for his positive qualities....gosh, I remember in an interview once curbs said 'well Richard is Richard', hard to add to that.....a very very special player, awesome, and i am so proud he played for us....did he get a testemonial?....I don't mean for the money, but because a lot of us want to thank him deeply.....easily would get into my all time CAFC team....love the bloke.0

Didn't realise he retired early, he'd been around for donkeys, thought he was ageing!
Decent centre back Rufus, always seemed to give it his all and wore his heart on his sleeve.0 -
His younger brother Marvin was in the same Charlton youth team as me - he was a top bloke too. Not in the same league as his brother but he desperately wanted to play in the same side as him0

Steve Brown, Johnny Humphreys close but RR has to have it...0 -
Remember his tackle against Spurs and a similar one against QPR where he made up about 15 yards on a forward who was clean through. The only defender I've ever seen whose tackling was as exhilarating to watch as seeing a goal go in.0

Who was the last player, other than Richard, whose only club was Charlton?
not the current young players but those that played their entire career for us and then retired.
Rare at most clubs now I would think.0 -
Swisdom - how old is Marvin? Played against you lot at under 13's i think in 1995/96, drew 2-2.
Half of my team were signed up by Charlton, only one has made it in the prem.0 -
