Was just watching some Youtube videos off him from his Cork days and I started to think. If he got some confidence he could atleast score 10-15 goals next season if not more! He needs confidence and to be played right, every game I have seen him score he has always seemed to score good goals showing skill and technique. I think we should sign him up or atleast get him on loan for the whole season and see what he can do. With experience and confidence he could be a good little striker and I know he has missed some sitters but he has had no confidence and least he got into the positions for them, no one else seemed to at times.

Bollocks. McLeod is utter, utter gash. Mooney did more for us in three months than McClown did in three years. he also looked like he gave a toss - unlike McLeod, who clearly didn't

That's fair enough - and I think Mooney's a decent squad player but no more. But McLeod is utterly atrocious - I have never seen him put in more than a 6/10 performance in a Charlton shirt.

I agree mate, 2 stand out games for me against millwall at home and swindon in the 2nd leg also. just think if he comes back here then reckon he would show us his quality, but whether we can get him is another question
  • His goals against Gillingham and Swindon were technically brilliant.

This! He always tried and ran his bollocks off when playing. Mcleod compared to him? Mcleod just is lazy and wont do anything apart from hit another player in a cup match.

Would not be too pleased to see Mooney back. He has heart and works hard but lacks a lot. One of them players who unfortuantely his weaknesses overshadow his strengths.

If he could bulk up then he could be decent and get 15 goals but it seems we have strikers who are likely only to match that. Burton and Akpo likewise will probably not breach the 15 mark and we probably need someone likely to get above the 20.

he is all about the confidence; take the game against swindon - he gets credited for the O.G on Parky orders (allegedly - unconfirmed by BDL) he then scores a blinder. these Jekyll & hyde type of players who are either brilliant or shite are extremely frustrating and i think there are plenty of free options out there that could do a job for us; like Will Hoskins, Matt Harrold, John O'Flynn, Josh Magennis, Adebayo Akinfenwa to name a few.

Reading might decide to play him now he has gained experience.

An unfairly maligned player in my opinion but hey ho.

With next to no money can we attract any better?

This has been done to death now, but it's utterly ridiculous to say Mooney is just awful. Parts of his game are pretty good, others are not so good. He's limited, but not awful.

Not sure how I feel about the prospect of having him back. I quite like him as a player, I think he's has an intelligence about him in a way players like Akpo and Mcleod do not and think he could improve with some hard work and good coaching, but I'm not sure we have the time or money to wait for him to develop.

He's had his moments...not too bad, would like to think we and he could do better...50/50 as to whether we give him another try for next season....I can't call this one really.

If we sign him I'd like it to be now - get him in the gym and build him up a bit over the summer. With a bit more physical presence he'd be a much better player.

Question is would he come back, got a bit of flak from the Charlton fans and knows next season in a side that may not do as well as last year he may be a target for the boo boys. Not condoning the boos but we all know Mooney is an easy target and if a permanent signing even more so.

I thought he did OK. He's not Pele or drogba but a least he tries unlike some ok the dross we've signed in the past ie Jeffers , McClown, Varney etc. He's even got a better scoring stat for us than Lisbie
  • I'd like to see us sign Mooney. Lightweight and had a terrible run of form last season, but considering his level of experience he does show promise. Like I-SAW-POUSO-PLAY said, a couple of great goals in there among the misses - especially the Gillingham one. Plus he clearly tries and moves about better than any of our other options.

Varney certainly did try, if anything too hard at times. Know what you mean though, would rather Mooney than McLeod or Jeffers, even in League One.

Hello, Im new here but have been reading these threads for a while but I would like to say my opinion on Dave Mooney.
Mooney always showed that he cared and gave everything, his running off the ball down into the channels created space for the rest of the team to exploit. I like Mooney and if we sign him next season with a good striker partnering him then sure, why wouldn't he be able to get 15 goals or more espesically with some confidence.

I also felt Mooney was unfairly made a scapegoat. Technically a good player and good finisher. Just wasn't getting the right service.

I'd be shocked if we could afford him though, there's nothing to say we'll have a player as good next year without money.

Thanks Oggy and cafc-4-life, appreciate it. Im only 14 as well xD lol.
I think Brett Pitman would be a great signing, swap deal with McLeod plus money from a sale of Bailey, which is always going to happen, would be a good move I think. Pitman's only 22 and scored over 20 goals in League Two this season, he can only get better.

I like Mooney, but we need more energetic strikes neh energetic players. We don't have enough beef that wants to get involved, whether that's a pacy wildebeest or powerful highlander.
