GRANT Basey has not yet been offered a contract at Charlton and his wait for a new deal looks set to continue.

The 21-year-old defender established himself as a regular in the side last season following Kelly Youga’s injury, but he missed the second half of the campaign because of ankle ligament damage sustained in the game at Bristol Rovers in February.

The Addicks do have options at left-back. Youga is still at the club but remains sidelined, while Johnnie Jackson signed last week from Notts County, though he prefers to play as a midfielder.

Manager Phil Parkinson said: “Talks about the restructuring of the budget are still ongoing and we’re still working to try to finalise that side of things before we can complete the squad.”

Surely Basey will be retained, even on just a 1-year deal.

His adaptability means he can cover several positions, his attitude and ability is proven, and he appears to have the club at heart.

Can I suggest that we get on with it and finalise it asap. I can only imagine that the Richardson sale has meant a few more coppers in the coffers than expected. Will be very disappointed if we don't sign Grant up. Jackson should be considered as CM or LM in my opinion. And what does "Youga is still at the club but remains sidelined" mean ? Still at the Club as in might not be for much longer and for how long is he sidelined ?

Agreed. Can't see him not being signed up.

The only sticking point may be Youga's injury - if he's not too far away, Parkinson may consider that with him, JJ and Llera all capable of playing there, Basey can be sacrificed to free up wages. This would be especially true if Reid is one of his targets, being another left sided player.

Surely we have a moral duty to offer Basey a contract? He suffered his serious injury serving Charlton!

That's before we consider the versatility and seeming commitment of the player in a small squad.

Although, if the cheating during the World Cup is typical, football and morality are alien concepts so I won't hold my breath.

Parky wouldn't want to play Llera at Left Back, surely?
Llera makes Basey seem as quick as Waggy, remember Llera skinned and redcarded in the Swindon 2nd leg play off game?

Sign up Basey, and if he does end up surplus to requirements he can always go on loan to Gillingham.
    They'll pay his wages.

You would certainly hope not, but with tight funds Parky may decide to run the risk. As I said earlier, I fully expect Basey to be re-signed and I'm almost playing devils advocate to see other possible thoughts and ideas.

Basey will be signed up we all know that.

Youga on the other hand seems to have a mystery knee injury which no-one knows what's wrong with?

Wasnt he selected as captain in the friendly at the weekend?

Richardson's sale might have provided a few coppers - but he needs to be replaced as does Lloyd Sam, and we need to find a striker or two. Sorting out Basey's contract is down the list and a demonstration of just how tight finances will be next season.

Semedo first half, Basey second half. He went off so Racon (I think) took over.

Rather worrying. Parky says he needs 8 players and we are miles from where we need to be yet we don't even have the capability to offer a youngster a new contract - Basey can't be on much money surely.

Would be gutted if basey went, there's somthing about the lad that in the near future he could be an awsome little player, still to find his true role more than happy with him at left back but just feel he could be a real rough diamond waiting to be polished into a gem. Could well be an exclent holding midfielder ala barry who also started as a full back.

Basey has 6 clubs interested - two of whom will have him tomorrow if they get their way.

This came from Grant himself around a month ago

I do hope we get our finger out of our arses

Really think Basey's overrated by a lot of people at this club. Although now, perhaps not by the management. Really, really slow player with a heavy touch. Not great defensively. Does have a brilliant cross on him but that doesn't cut it for me. Won't mind if he goes.

Didn't Youga declare himself fit for millwall away, so is this another injury?

I agree with you that he is slow but the rest of his game is decent, at this level anyway, and he appears to have a good, fighting attitude. Another consideration, not to be underestimated as we tend to be a small side physically compared to most, is his height for defending set pieces.

Somebody capable of playing left back, centre back, left midfield or centre midfield is worth keeping with a small thir division squad in my view.

I'd keep him but it did cross my mind that Jackson can also fill in all Basey's positions and is a better player, so could we keep both ?

I also would not want him at the back if Doherty is paired with Dailly/Llera because of the pace issue.

We need to offer him a contract to prevent him going on a free. I suspect all will become clearer as the week progresses.

No same injury. He'll be fit in 4 weeks.

Would be delighted if Youga's fit and willing in 4 weeks. I'd also like Basey to sign; his versatility and commitment could be important in such a trimmed squad but I guess it just shows how tight everything is - or perhaps Parky just wants him to step up a notch now and is using a bit of psychology.

    Keep up, Scoh .....!

    * When Youga was injured, remember the OS said he'd be out for 4 weeks.

    * Then at Christmas, he was 2 days away from being fit for the 1st team before he had a setback - and would again be out for 4 weeks.

    * At the end of January, he declared himself ready to return - later amended to another 4 weeks

    * He then again declared himself ready to return for the Millwall game, but Parky said he wouldn't be risked.
So we speculated that would be about 4 weeks then.

Nobody's heard about him since then, until Parky said today that Youga is still sidelined.
But no doubt he'll be out for, erm .....4 weeks.

In Youga's case, more like an Annual month .....(!)
