It's a shame for May he won't get to test himself at Championship level. A lot of Birmingham City fans believed he could step up, I reckon he could.
Now he's gonna have to get promoted again with a different club to get a chance.
Smart business by Birmingham though, he was never going to start over Kyogo, and Stansfield is their money man. Getting more money back than what you paid for him, helping get you promoted and getting his wages off the books where he was a higher earner is great business by them.
Alfie May making a fuck ton of cash right at the end of his career, great footballing story for him.
I'm interested to see how much May is earning. Despite all his being closer to home nonsense I'm sure he was said to be on 15k+ a week at Brum (the more obvious motivator) at his age I'm surprised he'd let that contract go, as it's life changing. so I wonder what pay off he's got or wage he's signed for and Huddersfield are paying. Either way he guarantees goals at L1.

Their owner has been throwing some money around this summer (not on transfer fees, but certainly on wages) and they've built a decent side. I can definitely see them being automatic promotion contenders.
Got to give credit to May, only spent a year with us and a year with Birmingham and both sets of fans loved him.

You watch, after not going there last season he'll end up having a shocker for them.
I hope not as I like him as a player and a person.

Interesting quote from May at end of the season, if he is to then sign for Huddersfield and play in League One yet again.
"I’m 31, the drive the gaffer had to get this club back to the Championship, I just wanted to be a part of it. I made the right choice. Next year I’m going to be a Championship player. I can tell my kids that I’ve played in the Championship and that will mean a lot to me."

To be fair he still might do. Alfie is a proper grafter as a footballer, he isn't the type to want to sit on the bench, he genuinely loves playing football and appreciates the opportunity.
I think he will back himself to get promoted again and get a chance with Huddersfield. He never would have been happy sitting on the bench, he's said loads of times he wants to play every minute of every game, I can see him retiring well into his 30s.
2 interesting things there, 1) Birmingham managing to make a profit and 2) him having to drop down to League One again. He's stuck in the mezzanine of too good for L1 but not good enough for the Championship
Fair play to Birmingham for making a profit, but smacks of desperation a bit from Huddersfield.
I mean May is definitely a decent option at League One level... But £1.2m seems a lot
£1.2m is a lot but how much would it be worth to Huddersfield, for a player that has scored 82 goals in 144 starts at League 1 level, to get back into the Championship?
Once Brum signed Stansfield, it was clear that for them May was just a temporary measure to get out of L1, rather than a player for the future. Their budget can afford better players than May. And that's not knocking him
If he had stayed with us, we would have given him a chance in the Championship, I'm sure Huddersfield also will, if they go up.

Alfie May, Ricky Holmes, Lyle Taylor and Yann Kermorgant to name just four ex Charlton players all earned their biggest contracts after they left CAFC and gone past 30. Jordan Cousins on the the other hand at 30 is being paid well at Eastleigh for a National League wage but nowhere near his Stoke money.
The late developers have to make their best contract at the end where the teenagers who break though like Cousins tend to get their best contract in their mid 20's
If May didn't ask for a transfer, then B'ham will have pay up the rest of his contract.
That's not how it works, he's not suddenly a captive Huddersfield player forced to play for them against his will, he'll have to agree to the move.
I suspect Birmingham are probably either contributing to the wages or accepted a bit less of a fee so May can get a signing-on fee to bridge a gap in wages, but it's not a case that Birmingham have to pay up a contract in full to a player who's agreed to the move.
Good signing by them, I was expecting more (in terms of their spend) but seems sensible business. Improves their squad and he's still only in his early 20s, he was class the season before last, most Bolton players did shit this season tbf and he still did alright.

Agreed he seems rated by the Bolton fans aswell on their forum from what I was reading.
Birmingham get their investment back, with a profit, he gets a second signing on fee. Not a bad 13 months work. Can't remember if we paid a transfer fee but another signing on fee plus decent wages.

Oxford signing Harris on loan from Fulham was at Birmingham last year was offered to us on loan earlier this window but we declined signing him. Positive that players we see as not good enough for Charlton are being taken by other championship relegation candidates

I wonder if part of the reason for the high fee paid by Huddersfield is that Birmingham will use a fair wedge if it to pay up some of Alfie Mays wages so that he then fits into the Huddersfield pay structure..? Just musing.
40% of Champ signings so far have been from overseas. Will be interesting to see if we are behind the curve in the trend here
By nature of being in L1 we are already. Then you have to factor in that due to TS’s son with the hard shot our recruitment department stalled/was taken apart. It sounded like Andy Scott was trying to build a new recruitment department and I’m sure the CEO will take that on when approved but basically I think our only option for looking abroad is players Chapple already knew of

Guaranteed 20 goals for Oxford now you've said that

He spent time on loan at Watford and Strasbourg last season and is an American International.
I would expect dyer consequences to follow if 40% is incorrect.
We could buy players from the IOW or Jersey to push our % up 🤔
