Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of ball-carrying midfielder Sonny Carey, who will join the club following the expiration of his contract at Blackpool.
The 24-year-old, who netted 11 goals from midfield last season, has put pen to paper on a three-year contract to become the Addicks' first signing of the summer.
The news follows this morning’s announcement that Nathan Jones has signed a new five-year contract with the club and the Charlton Manager explained he was pleased to bring in a player he has tried to sign in the past.
He said: “Sonny is a player I’ve known for a while. He’s done well at Blackpool, he’s had a few seasons in the Championship and finished last season strongly.
“He’s 24 years of age, so has plenty of scope to improve, he’s athletic, he’s a ball-carrier, he can create, he can score, so those things add to what we’ve already got here. We always want our midfielders to chip in [with goals], our midfielders this year have and we want to add that competition and keep moving forward as a team and as a group. As a club we believe we’re moving forward, he can contribute to that and we believe he has the attributes to play for Charlton Athletic.”
Carey said: "I’m delighted, from the minute I had a call with the gaffer I knew straight away that this was the place for me, his aspirations for the club and the vision that he has are unmatched. I’m delighted that Charlton are back in the Championship, so I can’t wait to get started."
The midfielder came through the Norwich City academy and joined Blackpool four seasons ago, scoring seven goals in his last eight games for the Tangerines.

Great to have a first signing confirmed, and to have fought off Derby if he was in talks with them today
Can't say I recall the name too well I don't think
But I want names that'll keep us in the Championship, rather than excitement, so in Jones and Chapple I trust

Came out of nowhere! Always thought he looked good when I've seen him play, more of a 10 than an 8 and very decent at driving at defenders.

Fits the profile of player who’s done well in this team - good pedigree coming through at a championship/prem club, dropped down the leagues and is moving his way back up them.0

Sounds promising in that he’s a good age, score and creates goals and is described as a ball carrying midfielder, all things we need in the middle of midfield.
Much needed competition for Doc and Berry too, and hopefully in time proves to be an upgrade.
Looking forward to seeing what he can do and hopefully more signings not far away.3 -

He will be missed, hasn’t had the biggest impact for most of his time with us, but the second half of last season he kicked on, scored a few and was running at people off the left side

Sounds like he’s more competition to Berry than Doc. Probably rules out Gilbert returning.9

Although as shown with Greg's early season form, Jones wont hesitate to drop him, so wont be surprised to see "better" arrive later in the year.
We certainly need more depth as well as a starting eleven though1 -

Some decent finishes with both feet from outside the box. Looks like he's taken penalties with his right foot during his career.1 -
