A midfielder who can run with the ball  ✅

A midfielder who can score goals ✅

Experienced in the Championship but is also still young  ✅

    What's not to like.
Can he keep a clean sheet?
If he can he won’t fit in here.
    Too many bed wetters.

Disappointing that our first signing isn't a shoe in starter
I would expect him to start. If he is only signed for the bench, we are going to have a helluva strong team.

I watch the Football League highlights show every week and his name always seems to be mentioned when Blackpool are on and of course he has been scoring for fun the last three months

Asked a Blackpool fan I know about him:

”He was with us for three years and has been average. However for the last three months of the season played brilliantly

    Two theories

1 Bruce finally got the best out of him

2 He was a lazy sod and only bucked his ideas up as his contract wound down.

I have no idea which one 😀”

    So there you go…

I would imagine that if 2 were the case that NJ would probably not be particularly interested, he doesn't suffer lackadaisical players lightly.

Possibly it's somewhere between the two, where he needed a very specific role to help find another level - which hopefully he can replicate at Charlton.

He’s only 24 and was playing non league not so long ago. Maybe he’s starting to reach his potential.

Well who knows, but a ball carrier is an 8, not a 10. We will soon know either way.

Funny, I thought a ball carrier hung between his legs...🙄

Not a bad signing by the sounds of it, adds more goals to the midfield, agree probably sounds more Berry than Docherty alt.

    Welcome.

Sorry to keep going on but I drink in my local with a Blackpool fan, his opinion on Carey

    - He's either in the game scoring or he's completely anonymous
    - Decision making usually is what lets him down (Shooting is usually very consistent, more a goalscorer than a creator)
    - But he did admit 2nd half of this season, the midfield seemed to have settled and that helped Carey work out as a No10 where the runners are etc and he said he was 2nd for him in POTY Voting behind Morgan.

I like the age and style of him personally, can hit a long shot which is what we've lacked for a couple years now, and no transfer fee so it's a good start. Gives us another option along with Berry In that midfield 3. Long may it continue UTA !

I like this signing. This a low risk, high reward type.

He's a better attacking midfielder than anyone else we have at the club (the numbers don't lie) he's young, and has the potential to make the step up.

I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about him, but the common theme seems to be that for the last 3 months, he's been Blackpools best player and would have been a starter next season. Sounds like we may have gotten lucky with a player peaking just as his contract runs out.

I think his name has popped up on here before as well. I know I've mentioned him as a signing I would like.

Decent start, let's hope he flourishes here in that 10 role. Welcome Sonny Carey.

Nah he’s talking about Bradley Branning isn’t he? Charlton fan in real life ironically.

Numbers mean sod all. If they did then Sweaty Balmer would have played in goal one season.

They’re not talking about literal squad numbers.

Interesting that Jones wanted to sign him at Luton, so obviously one he thinks will work in the system

But it means nothing now. A 10 this, an 8 that. Does anyone under 30 have any idea about what that even means?
Even back in the 80s when I started going, these numbers you refer to weren't totally respected. Tell me for example where a 4 or a 6 plays?

I think we all know by now that Jones likes a very specific set of qualities in a player. Even very good players (Alfie May) that don’t possess those qualities just don’t fit in with the Jones ethos and requirements. Carey is only 24 and has already been on Jones radar when Nathan was at Luton. He knows enough about Carey already to know that he’s a player that Jones thinks he can improve and has those all important qualities. I suspect that most if not nearly all the players we pick out as desirables won’t get anywhere near NJ’s shopping list. Carey is a classic example. Interesting summer ahead.

Lol what are you on about? People under 30 use position numbers to distinguish distinct roles and types of players all the time. Particularly distinct midfield roles. The usual 3 aree 6,8,10. 6 being your deepest midfielder either a Dobson type defensive Mid or a Coventry style ball winner and passer. 8 is your box to box runner and 10 your attacking mid.

In old money 442 the 4 and 8 were the CM and 6 was a CB with 10 as the pacey striker. However as football has evolved (no one plays that way anymore) so have the roles and the descriptions of them.
