"Oh good, that bastard's dead!"
That's the phrase Norman Tebbit would come up with, every morning that he read in the obituary columns in the newspapers if someone he didn't like had passed away. I won't use that phrase about him. Because he was a behemoth in politics in the 1980s. He bestrode British politics in an age when Conservative politicians were of infinitely greater gravitas, intelligence, wit and ability than in more recent years. He'll be remembered as Chairman of the Conservative party in the 80s long after anyone will could even name the current (Nigel Huddleston).
That he should hog the headlines in a week that many people are focused on the Tour de France would probably have caused him a wry chuckle.
I despised his politics. But no-one deserved the fate that befell Tebbit and his wife on 12 October 1984. No British politician - of whatever persuasion - should ever have to face violence from political opponents. What a shame that the man who overcame such tremendous pain and anguish should be remembered in the same week that a journalist found it appropriate to "satirise" bombing Brighton.
RIP the Chingford Skinhead.

RIP. Played a big part in reversing the economic soup of the 70's and overcoming some of its key drivers. Essex Man personified.1

He certainly led a full and interesting life, I wonder if he would ever have become PM except for having to care for his wife after the 'Brighton Bombing' .. perhaps he made too many enemies .. R I P0

He came from an era where politicians were of a completely different type than they are today.
I could probably name most of the Conservative cabinet from that era and they were giants compared to what we have to put up with nowadays.
Rip sir.8 -
RIP..you may not agree with his politics but you can admire his steadfast conviction. I loved his spitting image portrayal. Of a time when Politicians weren't just time servers biding their time for the next reality show2

Hated him. Got sick of his comments and the way he looked down on the working class of this country, whilst filling his boots with one day directorships of companies.
Had a few friends who committed suicide due to his government's evil policies.
Hated the unions and the people they represented. But as Blackpool said, you could reel of the cabinet even that long ago, rather than the spineless clowns in charge today.13 -
Met him a few times in my ministerial private office days in the then Dept of Industry. He always came across as very personable. Didn’t agree with his politics but that is another matter.
RIP Lord Tebbit.3 -
I'll get on my bike then, see ya mate1

Well as the old saying goes, if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything.

But I agree that he challenged the IRA and that was an utterly laudable thing.4 -
