    Charlton Town ?
  • Oh well. What goes around comes around. Paul Walsh , Tom Lockyer, Alfie Doughty went in their direction. Luton Athletic ? We’ve just caught up all in one go !

I've got a strong feeling he will stay fit for the whole season and this will transpire to be a great bit of business

Just googled and apparently Reece Oxford is suffering from the effects of long Covid.
I've got an idea that he was the youngster that Riga turned down when he was manager.

How many ex-Luton players is that now?
    3.

2 defenders & a goalkeeper. From a team that has suffered back to back relegations. 🙄

And a promotion to The Premier league. Do you ever have anything positive to say?
To be fair, he only played 20 games, averaging 14 minutes of football per appearance that season, was hardly instrumental. It's not like we have signed Doughty or one of their other heavy hitters.

That would be like if we sold Gassan to a League1 side and tried saying he got us promoted to the Championship. Although it is true, he played a part, but the context is relevant.

This is a player with a truly woeful injury record and it's quite consistent. Let's hope we can get him playing, but the smart money says he will feature about the same amount as Dan Potts, unless our medical team can perform miracles.

I’ve heard plenty say if he could stay fit for 40 games he’s in the Prem.

well if that’s the case we couldn’t sign him then - maybe the 20 game we do get should be treated as twenty games of a player that would otherwise not be in the Championship

If Roland won't play ball over the lease extension, could we buy Kenilworth Road?

Clearly a good player... but I am getting Ben Garner / Swindon vibes about all of this. If the season doesn't go well this reliance on Luton players will get thrown back at him, and we know how well NJ takes criticism.
Kind of agree, had the same feeling when Garner bought in the ones he knew. difference is that Jones’ signings from Luton have all played majortiy Champ and Prem. Where as Garner was from league two hoping to step up so it was more of a gamble. Squad integration may come easier and knowing how Jones likes to play gives me more confidence.

I think you are both forgetting that Garner was almost forced to fall back on players that he knew he could get on the cheap and had experience of, after realising that Sandgaard had sold him a sack load of bullshit on where the club was heading and how he, Garner, would be backed to bring players in, not sure if the recent signings from Luton are a fair comparison.

If we pick up any more riff raff from Luton we’ll be starting with Tommy Robinson upfront!
Stephen Yaxley-Lennon? Sounds more of a Posh signing.

We're all terrified of players with bad injury records given our recent history but the difference this time is we've actually invested in preventing and mitigating injuries and it worked very well for us last season. Luton fans (for what that's worth, which I think is very little) seem to think he's a Premier League level defender, which is probably an exaggeration, but we wouldn't have gone for him if we didn't think we could keep him fit and get something out of him. If we're right then it's a great signing.

Lloyd Jones tends to miss chunks of the season, he's missed at least ten games each season he's been with us. Same with Ramsay, I think he missed 9 and 14 games and I don't think anyone would be claiming they weren't good signings, so if we can get Burke up to that level it'll be a great bit of business. What we need most in this squad is competition and the ability for a quality player to step in when the first choice is injured. If we've found an economical way to do that by leveraging our investment in player fitness then that's great.

Anybody know exactly what Burkes injury problems have been ?
Last season he missed three months of Luton’s campaign with a quad injury, similarly in the Hatters’ Premier League season he was out for two months with a knee injury. In their promotion season 2022/23 under Jones, the 6ft 2in defender missed two months because of a hamstring injury.
Two ways of looking at this:

Negatively: he's the kind of player who will always pick up injuries, so we won't see much of him.

Positively: the fact that they're all different injuries suggests there isn't a single underlying problem that will inhibit his career (like Ledley King, say). Maybe he's just been really unlucky, and his luck will turn at Charlton and he'll feature regularly for us.

In any case, welcome to Charlton Reece!
    Oh my days !!!!!!

Well nobody not even you can tell the future but Burke just passed a fitness test which I assume Will Abbott was all over like a rash. The club obviously feels it can manage his fitness and at this point he’s fit enough to pass his medical and be involved in a proper pre season.

But that's the point, team's get relegated, not individuals. We've signed individuals, not the whole Luton team... yet...
Well, we signed half the back line that shipped in enough goals to get relegated.....twice ! 😀.

Fuck me, please stop going on about back to back relegations when one of those was from the Premier league!

Just out of interest, how many goals do you think our back line from last season would concede in the Premier league?

whilst not ideal to pick up injuries that isnt really an awful injury record. Probably only a little worse than average.  Several of our key players, Jones and Ramsey had similar times out injured.

Of course not. He found something to moan about Miles Leaburn signing a new contract...

I don't think he's come in with any expectations (on either side) that he's going to be first choice throughout the whole season. He's very much here as someone to hopefully bring on to shore things up and maybe be the old pro in some cup games where the youth players make up the majority.

Bell and Gillesphey are both left footed CBs as well so even if his fitness is an issue it's unlikely that it will leave us completely without options.

Feel it's always harsh to mention the premier league relegation for these Luton players as if they had any realistic chance of survival that season, especially with the fact the promotion to said premier league is also never brought up, too positive I guess

    Luton v Blackburn, September 2022.

Can anyone name all nine current and former Charlton players involved in this match? There's also a bonus tenth who was released and never made a first team appearance.
