My great, great aunt (possibly great, great, great) was Sarah Terry, the mother of actress Ellen Terry. My mum met a couple of relatives who had known her but unfortunately dementia has now robbed her of the details.

Remember that name well growing up in the 80's and 90's.

I once did a VAT inspection on John Inman.

But it was at his accountants, so I didn't meet him. He wasn't free.

When I was growing up on the Woolwich Road, the couple next door worked in promotion marketing at things like Wimbledon etc, but they also did bit-part acting roles. I remember Bob was one of the coppers who raided the house and stood around the bed at the end of the Christine Keeler film Scandal. And Taryn often appeared as the lift operator in Are You Being Seved, which was before my time but still screened in the 80s. I remember watching it with my brother to see if we could tell whether it was her or not when the lift doors opened.... Pair of dins even back then

My second cousin who lives in the Newcastle area was very friendly with a famous Newcastle player (she was young but not illegally so) at the time and her dad (who was far from happy about it) took a call from Les Ferdinand (he wasn't the player in question) one night to try and sort things out. She had many stories about that side and parties. My wife worked with a couple of young women in a bank who used to get picked up by a chauffer and taken to parties all over the country to meet up with many high profile footballers including Rhaeem Sterling and his crowd. My Uncle used to play the piano in the Marriott hotel in Bexleyheath, where a lot of away teams stay/ed and did a duet with Big Ron Atkinson one night.

I was in a photograph advertising "Todd's Tackle" shop in the "Mercury" newspaper.
My brother and a friend were hiding around the corner having stolen my bike, so missed out on this once-in-a-lifetime chance of fame and fortune.

Based on some of the dicks I've sat near or next two recently, a fair percentage of Charlton fans also score weekly at Championship grounds up and down the country.

  • I used to play pool with Marti Pellow in the Rose and Crown in green street green.
He lived down this way for a short time
My brother used to work in green st green waitrose as a teenager and told me he'd seen him in there. I've called bullshit for 30 years on that but reading your post gives it big credibility after all!  (Sorry bro)😆

@Gribbo i went to see Jeff Stelling’s stage show with Bianca Westwood a few weeks ago. ‘Charlton fan Gribbo’s’ chess joke was a start turn in it and got a good laugh. You should charge him royalties!

The saxophone player for Bad Manners used to be a customer of mine.
He was a very quiet unassuming guy and had been dealing with him for a while, I then told him I was going to a gig and he then told me had played that particular venue.  I then asked him what band he was in, apparantly Buster Bloodvessel was not the most pleasant of geezers.
Anyway, I went home that night and you tubed Bad Manners, it was quite amusing seeing him play.  I took my picture sleeves of their records for him to sign.

I once took ex darts world champion Dennis Priestley to a double finish with his own darts....and missed, way back in the early 2000's.

I met him through a mutual friend and was asked to drive him to a local event near Gravesend for if I remember rightly, run by John Smiths beer, he was essentially taking on all local champions etc who had won a competition to play him, and whilst upstairs in a closed off bar area for his private use, he asked me & my mate to keep him warmed up, hence the game of darts with his own darts.

I once had Madonna's telephone number. True story. I used to work for we well known telephone company back in the day. I worked on a team that dealt with large business accounts. When she was over here (one of those Sony award things?), the team who managed the accounts for those type of companies arranged telephone numbers for their stars dressing rooms and one of them was a Madonna, I was a big fan of hers back in the day. (and no I didn't call her).

Andy Roberts was also a customer of mine, he was a good lad, we had a laugh when I told him who I supported, he's not too keen on Charlton :D
  • Two come to mind…

I once got stuck in a broken down lift with Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston. Didn’t realise it was them until days later when someone mentioned they were staying in the same hotel as me.

I also once stole Fred Durst’s (oh he of Limp Biscuit fame) shoe. And yes, he was wearing it at the time
  • For some obscure reason Norman Wisdom was perhaps the most famous Englishman in Albania during the post-WWII years under Communist rule in the isolationist state. Didn't quite reach those heights but on a trip to Albania in 1990 (when tourism was still very limited in numbers - plus no beards or bibles allowed) and about 18 months or so before the fall of communism, I became the English football correspondent for Radio Tirana.  That sounds rather grand and in reality all I did was to telephone in the First Division scores on a Saturday night and Radio Tirana took it from there.
All came about after we slipped away from our tourist minder and walked into the offices of Radio Tirana where we were treated like royalty. Turned out that English football and footballers were very popular in Albania along with the aforementioned Norman Wisdom and also Sam Fox for those who remember her.
Still not entirely sure how we got away with it but clearly the stranglehold of state authoritarianism was already weakening and football, along with Sam Fox's attributes, clearly transcended all barriers.
Needless to say, the usual supects (Man U, Liverpool and for some reason Spurs) seemed to generate the most interest and Gary Lineker the star attraction.
Our host at Radio Tirana claimed to have heard of Charlton. Perhaps so after the Lennie Lawrence years in the First Division but I wasn't entirely convinced, My stint as correspondent only lasted for one season but I kept in touch. Following regime change the sports correspondent whom we met there came to England where his first port of call was Old Trafford rather than The Valley. Shame - he missed out on seeing England's finest football club!
