Welling United - What is going on?

Such a shame to see them in total decline at the moment. I just checked where they are and 2nd from bottom.

What is happening with them?

Sad seeing them sink. Went today and pretty much all their shirt numbers were in the 30s and 40s and it’s only mid-November.

Cray Wands good value for the win. 1,400+ over there, so nice seeing a decent crowd there.

Good to bump into @Swerve @Afternoon Delight and a few others
  • They got a new manager lined up but I don't think it's been revealed to anyone as of yet

Its been a slow decline since losing the National League South playoff final in 2019.

They could end up going down to the Isthmian Div 1, when was the last time they played at that level? Must be decades??

If they go down again then they'll be at their lowest level since the 70s.

One of my best pals does their radio wings match commentary, new CEO just started, new tie in With Danson sports for youth development and new manager incoming. Hopefully a brighter future imminent.
There was meant to be a new flat development at PVR to bring in much needed funds, dont know what’s happened to that.
The social media has improved, but not a surprise with @Ollywozere at the helm

I went to Erith Town v Margate, 1st time at this ground for me. 3 - 7 final score, and a early sending off, and a penalty! Not bad for £6.00. Bought a golden goal ticket too, not seen one for yonks, always remember the ones at the Valley you had to peel the edges off!

Lots of the crowd were Margate - how on earth do these clubs survive on such small crowds.

I can’t say too much, but the problem Welling has had is that the ability, or rather speculative ability, to develop property at PVR has brought in people who haven’t always had the best interests of the clubs long term success at heart.

Jerry’s a good guy and knows how to build out the commercial side of football clubs to have long term success at that level, so hopefully this is more a temporary low before having a positive future.

That's actually a very crowd for that level, particularly as they are struggling so much.

If that flat development eventually goes ahead it's going to leave them with a 3 sided ground isn't it ?

was never going to happen - if only for the parking issues that would've arisen

Welling also parted with their grass root academy who all went over to Greenwich Borough at the end of last season.

There are merging with Danson Sports to create a Youth Development path from next season. Every player and a parent to get a season ticket and a whole rebrand. Seems like a positive move.

Erith & Belvedere are the leaseholders and they won't agree to the development.

Erith town, Erith and Belvedere, welling Utd, welling town. Just doesn’t sound sustainable.

It is until it isn't I guess, and/ or one or more makes a proposal to merge.

E+B I don’t know how they keep going. Been at Welling now for 26 years, they most have high overheads and little income at level 9 with very low crowds and no real heartbase to it.

Dev from this parish has done and amazing job with Erith Town at level 8.

Welling United are a real concern, downward spiralling and a ground that needs a lot of work. Really hope they turn a corner.

Welling Town I was playing against on a Sunday morning in Kent Suburban just 10 years ago. It’s effectively a Sunday team that switched to Saturday’s and now at Level 10
