Mr. Acworth used to support the Wings until he moved on to bombard the then Charlton manager with lists of players we should sign.
  • My first footballing hero was Stan Howe, Bexleyheath and Wellings keeper.
Always stood behind his goal which meant changing ends at half time.
This would be about 1960-62. Happy days.

And then one day when B&W didn't have a game I went to the Valley, Jan 1962 4th Round FA Cup against Derby County.................................................................

This brought back memories of my youth watching B&W. I think the time you mentioned was about the time they changed their name to Bexley United. They regularly had attendances of 1500/2000 and had a very good team. I recall when Stan howe played other players were George Fisher, Brian Taylor (Essex cricketer), Tommy Nekrews, Gerry Morgan, Colin(?) Saunders, Terry Gill, Roy Johnson, Brian Kelly. Do you remember any of these names?
A little bit later than you were referencing but a line up from when John Hewie was player/manager

According to Wiki an ex Wings player is the only player to have played in the Football Conference, all four divisions of the English League, the World Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup and the Intertoto cup.

Yes. Barry Fry signed him for Birmingham cheaply. There was another youngster who also joined a league side at about the same time.

  • Remember them all except Fisher.

There was a decent right winger, David Peters I remember.

Good crowds as you say, over 4,000 when we played Oxford Utd who were on their way to the Football League.

Ron Atkinson and his brother Graham both played for Oxford in the game.

    I have a vague
memory of seeing Charlton Reserves v Man U reserves at Welling. Is that a true memory?

I'm not saying your wrong but I only remember us playing Southern reserve sides although we played Ipswich once when Phil Parkes was in goal for them.

It’s a story of no investment of many years considering all the players they have sold in the past …. This season they must be close to 60 players coming and going it’s ridiculous… they need to rebuild the relationship with Charlton and take some of our younger  players on loan and perhaps have the Charlton under 23 games at
    Park View ?

Looking like a draw until the new winger they got from Billericay/Sittingbourne (Troy), put away a perfect volleyed second, then pretty much single handedly secured the victory.

Remember Brian Taylor, when they had the sand pitch he always tried to scoop the sand up to put the ball on when they got a free kick. Also remember a winger from the same time something Peters can't remember the first name but he was called Sylvia by some after the actress  :D

I remember David Peters. The crowd nicknamed him Sylvia. Horrible sods!

Not going to see many pitches that are that hilly/undulating.
Got to be a 6 metre drop from one end tho the other, and 2 metres left to right.
Really fought hard and could have been more.
The heavy wind certainly never made it one for the purists.
Not many clubs will get a result there when the weathers bad.

Team look very resilient as a unit now.

    What has caused the upturn?

I know they've gone through a lot of players this season, so is it now simply down to them having better ones, or is it that the new manager is a cut above the previous ones and is getting more from the group?

Certainly the new manager. A manager who will be out working with the team pre match warm up rather than milling around on a meet and greet session.
Got rid of a lot of driftwood, one of which lines up against us for Potters Bar next weekend.
The chairman is green and been influenced by many with no idea. That’s my take.
We now have a manager with proven ability, who knows talent, and young hard working players.

You know we are going to lose next weekend now, after all that praise.
