Galle likewise probably in your sights already. S coast resorts are enjoyable, if a little touristy. We liked Bentota also as another laid back coastal stop.
Colombo quite ok to visit but few big 'sights' so nor worth staying there long. If you do go there, check out prices at the Galle Face Hotel - reasonably affordable for the colonial experience.
Good to buy stuff like shirts, shorts in the better chain and independent stores - good quality and made in SL.
Food is brilliant.As you say, the food is superb … and the people are great, wonderful to meet.0 -

Not visited Botswana, but we travelled to Tanzania with this company and they do tours to Botswana. It's pretty much the number one destination I would like to visit, but I have a family of 4 of us to pay for and the quotes I got so far (admittedly from a small bespoke agent), ranged from £22K+ without flights which is not even remotely possible... Maybe one of those places I will never make I guess.
Don't need expensive lodges or anything like that.

I know the cruise ships are huge but both my wife and I have had bad experiences on ferries. The last time we got the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander (I know it's not a cruise ship) I felt really ill and my wife, for about 2 weeks after, felt like she was walking on sponges. It wasn't even that bad a crossing but, to be honest, I used to get sea-sick on the Woolwich Ferry!
The thought of feeling ill and being stuck on a ship for a long period of time has always put me off.0 -
In that case, I strongly recommend The Queen Mary. A proper ocean liner, the ride is as smooth as you like. Other than the wonderful scenery passing by, you wouldn't know you were on a ship. You don't even know when it's going through a storm it's so smooth.superclive98 said:

Aside from the obvious of climate and fantastic beaches etc.Stig said:
Great food, some of the friendliest people, always felt very safe there, a lot of history to explore, the mountains (I have actually skied there! Mount Olympus up in the Troodos), mountains are amazing and really are a must visit.
they also drive on the proper side of the road!!!
it’s one of the ex British colonies so has that clear connection.
im also lucky to have made new friends there and do have connections to a family business (my grandfather was a fruit importer and was actually there when war broke out in 74).
its clearly not necessarily the best place on earth (as depends what best of you are comparing), but it’s certainly my happy place and I think for short haul beach type holiday it’s hard to beat, can get a bit hot in the height of summer though!!1 -
We are planning on Japan in the spring and the Galapagos and Ecuador in the autumn. Plus I have a bonus music tour of the USA with a pal just after the World Cup finishes!0

Planning a trip to Rome for my daughter's birthday in early January. In March we are off to Porto. Possibly a lake house holiday in Arkansas in July (have a friend who lives there), a birthday celebration in the Caribbean (location TBD) for September and a trip to New York to see some other friends.0
