What’s funny is I completely agree with this but if TC does go he’s likely to go to a better club than ours.MartinCAFC said:End of the day not even based on just today but over the course of the season he's not good enough if we want to rise any higher than 18th in the table. Nothing to need to boo him over but if we want to kick on next season we need to upgrade on him in the summer.5 -
There were plenty today in NU who did want him to fail and encouraged it by booing our own player.MartinCAFC said:End of the day not even based on just today but over the course of the season he's not good enough if we want to rise any higher than 18th in the table. I find the abuse TC gets seriously baffling. But not surprising, given our fanbase love to scapegoat an academy player.
I think the Nathan Jones style of play singles him out too. The crowd's expectation for home games is to see some attacking football. TC is pretty much the only player we have that can inject some excitement, run at the opposition, and create something out of nothing. When that isn't happening on a regular basis, people get on his back, because it's not coming from anywhere else.
That's not a criticism of the Nathan Jones setup. But it's clear to me that there's a lot of pressure on our creative players, because we have very few, often only TC.10 -
I just don't understand it. An Academy player that's been at the club since the age of 8, a shy boy who obviously has talent, still only 21, a player that the manager trusts, otherwise he wouldn't keep selecting him. Nathan is a ruthless manager and will drop players who are not performing, yet he keeps selecting him, I assume because he thinks he can take our club forward.
Why don't the fans trust Nathan's instinct that TC is deserving a place in the team on merit, he sees him in training midweek, and he sees him playing matchdays.
This whole villification of TC is baffling, and I can't get my head around it.
Are people like sheep, and they follow the most agressive and abusive fans, thinking that I can't be left behind, is the spotlight on him, so fans are looking for any mistake he makes, often highlighting his mistakes, while ignoring mistakes made by other players.
For me it is turning into a bit of a witchhunt, no matter what TC does, people are pouncing on the slightest error, and to be frank I find it offensive and distgusting, and slightly worrying that we are treating one of our own in this way.
That's not to say he's been perfect, far from it, excellent some games, poor in others, it's just the level of abuse he is getting, from vocal fans I'm starting to find sickening.
It probably reflects the nature of society in Britain today, football fans reflect that, no forgiveness, little compassion, jumping on any weakness shown, I just find it very sad.16 -
There was a proper strange moment today where a long ball and he literally ran away from the ball like he was playing dodgeball, one of the most surreal things I have seen on a football field.0

That's because, as a professional footballer, he assessed quickly that he had no chance of chasing the ball down, so conserved his energy for a realistic opportunity.IR94 said:There was a proper strange moment today where a long ball and he literally ran away from the ball like he was playing dodgeball, one of the most surreal things I have seen on a football field.

Do you remember the moment I am talking about? it was a long ball and he ran out of the way to almost avoid the ball, it was more enery to get away the wayaltrinchamaddick said:

He was getting pelters from someone today for not competing for the ball when he was clearly coming back from an offside position. People seeing what they want at this point.altrinchamaddick said:

Call it what it is - it's a real poor way to treat a lad that has been with us the majority of his life. I literally heard someone shout out "You're f***ing s**t Campbell" whilst he was clearly in earshot. This was not the only one.
On Valley Gold Academy Day, of all days.
Just let that sink in for 30 seconds. Players and parents hearing that to, arguably, one of our best academy players at the club, in the first team, getting absolute pelters.
I don't know what it is with certain sections of our "fan" base at the moment, but I'm sick of it. He's one of our own. I get that some people pay their money to come throw abuse at referees and opposing players. Whatever floats your boat. However, support the team and particularly support those Academy players that, over time, have probably paid in a not negligible way for the seats and concrete you sit on.
Yes, I get it that he is out of form right now and it's frustrating.
Yes, in my opinion, I'd have brought Kelman in today from the start and given him time out of the spotlight.
Yes, I understand the impact on his confidence this would have had, but it's how I would have managed him.
There are so many factors here. He's a winger, and NJ doesn't play wingers in the traditional sense. He needs WBs that can defend. NJ is desperate to make him fit because he likes the lad. He is also not a striker either. Forcing him to do either of those things shows his flaws in the most glaring sense and doesn't allow him to enjoy his football. I saw an unhappy player today, rather than one that is choosing to be ineffective. He's lacking belief and confidence, despite the staff doing everything to support that (I saw Hylton with a supportive arm round him, just before the game). NJ is trying to force the form into him, and it's making it worse.
As I have already said in this thread, his contract is up in the Summer. He leaves for a free, for nothing. All that work we invest in him for him to, most likely, join a Championship side in or around us who do play with out and out wingers. New system, new outlook, most likely a new TC. Watch him, imho, likely flourish in a system that fits his play. He has struggled at the level this year, but he's worth a punt on a free for multiple Championship sides and likely relatively cheap wages. Maybe it doesn't work and he does pull a Apter/CB-T and does end back in L1, but how many people would actually be surprised if he does become the player many of think he could be when the style suits him. It pains me to say it, but look at Femi Azeez - those extra two years he has on TC, and he's flying, playing in the way TC would love to. Different players adapt to the level at different rates.
The worst thing about this continued discourse about him is the current treatment. I expect better of Charlton fans. We're supposed to be a nice club. It's something that appeals to me about the club and my general feelings around the fan base. Instead, it's absolute bottom of the barrel Twitter slop that just brands him lazy and disinterested, and it's festered into something I find pretty unpleasant.
100% he will be having some serious thoughts about staying here past the Summer. And quite honestly, I wouldn't blame him.21 -

Ah, fair enough (and appreciate the feedback) - even with us taking the option for another year, maybe TC himself decides he wants to go in the summer for a fee, rather than a free, to "repay" the club. Would anyone really be that surprised if he decided that after how he has been treated by certain sections?fenaddick said:Fantastic post @th0rryy but he won't be going for free this summer, NJ has already said we'll activate the one year option. Can't wait for the comments under that announcement...
For a player that clearly is affected by confidence, maybe the change is what he thinks he needs. Certainly doesn't help when the collective groans compound every decision he makes. He's the only player we have with genuine attacking pace that scares defenders. He's the player opposing teams regularly highlight as our threat and double up on. The one opposing fans see as the one to watch for.
I dunno. At times, it feels like some people feel obliged to poke and kick our Academy graduates from the stands if they aren't setting the world alight. Playing in the Championship is hard and it's been hard for TC. Maybe he'll never get it and upper L1 is his cap, but it feels like he still could have a higher cap than where he is right now. I still feel he could spend more games at this level than not, but what do I know?
I've been in both home and away ends hearing people rag on the lad endlessly. He's absolutely not beyond criticism, but a multitude of factors are contributing and he's not just being f***ing lazy.4 -

I’m surprised some of the boo boys and girls haven’t claimed credit for the way he played better after they booed him not being subbed off?I do wonder what the 120 or so Academy players and their families who were present today were left thinking. Not exactly a positive way to encourage talented youngsters to stick with us and break into the first team.4

I think the frustration is mainly with NJ for continuing to start him, when most of the crowd and TV audience can see that he shouldn't be starting.ForeverAddickted said:What continues to annoy me about the TC criticism, and I said this earlier in the season, is the fact that he'll have a bad game and this thread is right at the top of the page - You'd think he was by far the worst player each and every week, but that wasn't the case today.I guess its the fact that he's an Academy player, so has to get picked out more, so that he's not shown favouritism perhaps... I dont know
That's not TC's fault, but unfortunately the anger gets directed at him, and not Jones.
It doesn't help when Jones tells the world how "electric" he is in training, which only raises people's expectations, when week after week, he fails to deliver anything meaningful.
Terrible again first half, Dykes may as well have been playing on his own up front.
That's exactly where TC should be performing and producing.
Yes he found more space when moved to wing back and put in a couple of dangerous balls, but you'd expect that from any wingback worth his salt.3 -
Surely the best move for everyone is to take him out the firing line over Easter especially with the amount of international travel he'll be doing and use him off the bench where he can be more effective. Just don't think starting him out of position up top is working at all.
It's an interesting one because he comes up constantly with opposition fans as our most threatening player and I would expect there's going to be summer interest from sides that play with natural wingers. Someone will take the bet that they can work on his inconsistencies.3 -
To be fair you don’t hear anything in the West Stand.2121 said:Where does he get abuse tho?! I sit west upper and dont hear it.5 -

When finally played his real position, winger, he was excellent and finally started terrorising their rhs and putting in decent balls, we had a kelman or box type striker on the pitch we'd have won yesterday (undeservedly admittadly) and after just 20 min in his position he would have ended up MOM.
But alas we didnt and a bizarre number of fans spitting feathers he's not defensivly strong enough up for a lwb, correct he isn't. Nor clinical enough or really strong enough for a striker in a long ball team, correct again, he isn't. I just dont see why he gets dogs abuse for being played put of position.
Reading any opposing teans forums/comments/blogs etc its clear how he's precieved as our biggest threat both pre ahd post game.
Other than mayb the 'Ipswichs' of the league there's not a team who wouldn't gladly take him off our hands if he came up on a free. That speaks volumes tbh, there's quite a few of our squad who wouldn't get a second look.4 -

This is the sort of comment that I find so frustrating, making out that he bottled it, but in reality made the correct footballing decision.I think that’s another gripe some people have with him, funnily enough - how slow he can be getting onside.
I back him, as I do all our players - sometimes too much with some of them and for too long, much to the annoyance of some posters. But I can’t for the life of me see why Jones doesn’t just use him off the bench rather than starting him week in, week out. He can be a proper game changer when used like that imo.
NB - I’m not condoning the boos, etc., but if you genuinely can’t see why people get frustrated with him and criticise him respectfully on here, there’s not much point in discussing it.
Said it before - he’s now well and truly installed as our current Albie Morgan.3 -
A real shame to hear some fans reaction.
Let's take Harry Clarke for example. He's likeable and liked by fans, but essentially nobody is focusing on him for missing some absolute sitters that have cost us between 6-9 points essentially.5 -

He's a talented player but needs to sit games out from the start for a bit.
Kelman was just developing some rhythm so imo should be given a starting place for the next three games with Dykes, then bring TC on second half when his pace will be a real threat against tiring defenders.

I dont knowTo cherry pick your comment, I think this is very telling actually about what we've heard from Jones and what we've heard from Kelman of late as well - If you don't put the effort in, back at Sparrows Lane (as Kelman spoke after Stoke (?) that he'd been letting himself down a bit) then you're not getting in the starting eleven.I think thats one reason why we saw Apter a lot less, as he wasn't doing what was asked of him when he did get to play, and then probably wasn't putting in the hard yards in training, was that the same too for Docherty's absense at the start of the year (?)What of course helps Campbell a bit compared to the majority of the squad, is the fact that he "can" play Left Wing-Back if we need him to, he's more "versatile" than those around him, so probably does help his cause with Jones a bit.0 -
He is clearly not a finisher but you wouldn't expect a RB/RWB to be so. I'm amazed that he keeps getting into these positions.ForeverAddickted said:
