Hi, and welcome to today's Match Thread, 33 years and one day after Pompey played us in the club’s historic first match back at The Valley in 1992…A period of applause will take place before kick off for Billy Bonds MBE and Marvin Hinton who passed in the last week…

Today, it's a welcome return to The Valley for this 12:30 kick off match with Portsmouth, a match that many of us have said is a must win, and I can't argue with that, we desperately need to get points on the table, and today is the day against a Portsmouth side that has just entered the bottom three after a 0-1 home loss to Bristol City last Saturday, whist bearing in mind just five places below us…

Nathan gave an update on the fitness, " The Bell injury isn’t as bad as we first thought and Knibbs was taken off on Saturday as a precaution, Kelman and Burke are close [to returning], Edwards and Godden are the ones that we're hampered by."

Regarding Portsmouth; Ogilvie, Shaughnessy, Farrell, Umeh and Waddingham are all sidelined, and Dozzell is suspended having collected five yellow cards.

Portsmouth are Charlton’s most-played opponents, we've met on 114 previous occasions, winning 40, Pompey winning 44 and the remaining 30 encounters ending in draws, our last meeting ended in a goalless draw at The Valley back in February 2024.

Team…

Academy graduate Karoy Anderson will make his first start of the seasontoday…

Onel Hernández also starts as Nathan Jones makes two changes from the team that played Coventry City last weekend. There is also a place on the bench for the first time for Jérôme Roussillon, who joined Charlton last month.

Kayne Ramsay, Lloyd Jones and Macaulay Gillesphey are expected to start in a back three in front of Thomas Kaminski.

James Bree and Hernández are likely to operate as wing-backs with Anderson joining Conor Coventry and Sonny Carey in midfield, behind Tanto Olaofe and Tyreece Campbell.

Roussillon is joined by Will Mannion, Greg Docherty, Joe Rankin-Costello, Luke Berry, Harvey Knibbs, Ibrahim Fullah, Rob Apter and Miles Leaburn.

Charlton: Kaminski; Ramsay, Jones (c), Gillesphey; Bree, Coventry, Anderson, Carey, Hernández; Olaofe, Campbell

Subs: Mannion, Roussillon, Docherty, Rankin-Costello, Berry, Knibbs, Fullah, Apter, Leaburn

Now parked in Charlton having left home at 7am.

It's a bit different to last week's match and the last home game (oh, and the midweek effort) - on those occasions I was struggling with 30+°C temperatures and fairly free-flowing rum and piña coladas; now it's considerably colder, wetter (although it did stop about halfway down) and grimmer.

I suppose we'd better wander down to the ground soon, wouldn't want to miss all the (alcohol-free) excitement ...

Campbell starts again, starting to wonder what photos he has of Jones

4231 or 352 with Henandez at LWB?
  • Fullah on the bench 👍. Hopefully he'll get a decent chunk of playing time.

Are Pompey weak down their right? If it’s a 3-5-2 (and looking again it probably is) the Hernandez and TC down the same side is v attacking

Think this is TCs last chance to impress for it to be worth starting him, looked dull the last few games minus Coventry which put him back in his natural position.

If it's true that Hernandez isn't getting another contract, why is he getting picked over Apter? Not like he's done anything positive of note.

Seem to be in the minority but I don't actually mind that. Comments from Pompey fans are about lack of energy in the middle with Pack and Swift, could be a good game for Anderson to play in based on that.

Apparently also missing a couple of centre backs, so got a full back in the middle, hopefully can be dragged out wide by the way Tanto and Campbell play leaving room in the middle for the likes of Carey to exploit.

    Maybe it wasn't true, and he's just signed a 4year + 1 year option...🤔

I think it's just because Hernandez defends by running into the other player, while Apter runs after them with a slight delay.

I have no problem with starting Campbell if we are playing a 433 he is a decent winger, issue for me is when he starts as one of the two up top he has no idea how to play that role properly.

    I love a sensible answer...😉

Anderson is exactly the player we need without the defenders we rely on, someone who can do the off the ball harrying effectively and quickly help the team break with pace

Docherty being dropped for Anderson is a good shout for me. Anderson for all his faults has the ability to disrupt the oppo flow more than anyone. If Carey can get on the ball further up because of that it’s going to make a massive difference

Not against Southampton, Hernandez didn’t .  Jog alongside and and let the cross come in was the tactic

I hope that you're sweating buckets today mate... If we win, then someone needs to glue you permanently to your seat at the Valley, to ensure that you can never be away again!!

P.S. Hope that you had a good Cruise though

Another case of a player becoming the answer just by being out of the team.

Anderson will work hard but he will also give the ball away numerous times, his first touch and awareness has always been his Achilles heel.

Happy if its 4-4-3........not so if its 3-5-2 or 5-3-2. The latter 2 are more square pegs in round holes. The fact we have 2 players on the bench that can play LB or LWB tells me Nathan has no trust in the starting 11.

I hope its 443 & we are more attacking. This is a must win game.

Even 4-4-3 is square pegs in round holes, as you'd have Ramsay at Left-Back
