It's the nature of such awards, that they favour people who have a glorious win or year rather than those who are just really good every year.
In cricket for example Stokes won in 2019, when we won the WC (plus his Headingley innings), but the likes of Cook and Anderson have never been near winning.4 -
Kevin Sinfield for me.
7 ultras in 7 days in memory of his best mate Rob Burrows is a feat beyond most on planet Earth, let alone for all the money he has helped raise in recent years.
If I had to pick from that list, I'd go as far as saying Littler has done more for the profile of his 'sport' than any of the others. Lando has had a brilliant F1 season, so would have to be between them two for me.

This, absolutely spot on.johnnybev1987 said:All a bit BBC for me1 -
Cricket will always struggle being paywalled away on Sky unfortunately. Root I don't think has ever come close despite being one of the greats of his generation. Anderson never having won it and Broady only having a second place is weird to think about.killerandflash said:It's the nature of such awards, that they favour people who have a glorious win or year rather than those who are just really good every year.

They are mostly not sports nor are they personalities.0

Every year this thread is always a great one for people to let us know how important their opinion is to themselves...10

I do know this, maybe wrong choice of words on my point, how either have never won it. There are more examples but i've always thought its a load of rubbish/ toshshirty5 said:

All a bit BBC for me
Ronnie O'Sullivan has been nominated twice, but finished outside the top three in both 2020 and 2022.1 -
No different to any other thread in that respect, it is a forum open to all sort of opinions...Algarveaddick said:Every year this thread is always a great one for people to let us know how important their opinion is to themsleves...3 -
My point though is that SPOTY is for a great year, rather than being really good for 15 years.MarcusH26 said:

Until England's men win something Harry Kane will never win the trophy, despite being an England legend, way more than Mary Earps for example.1 -
Cause the public saw fit to vote for someone more deserving in their opinion in those years.johnnybev1987 said:

So why hasn’t Kane made the list considering the amount of goals he’s scored for Bayern and England in the last 12 months . Perhaps he should change his name from Harry to Harriet ?3
-
Not sure how anyone can vote for the golfer. Isn't this the bloke who bottled out of the Olympics because he was scared he might catch the zika virus?
A bottle job. And he's won the RTE SPOTY twice. That should do for him.0 -

Littler???...Darts ain't a sport...🤦♂️
- there's a physical action that is required, differentiating between doing well and doing badly;
- there is a clearly defined scoring system
The standard is also way, way up on the days when you had Cliff Lazarenko lighting Jocky Wilson's cig for him (great sportsmanship that), even if a lot of players do remain in a certain physical mould.

True ET, but has become one of those Bingo Card threads. The same people with the same comment every year.eastterrace6168 said:

It will be Lando, but Kelly and Hampton have a shout. Football and motor racing have a higher profile than snooker and the same can be said for darts which will mean Littler won't win despite being so dominant in his sport. At the end of the day, does it matter?1

They were all at the front of massive marketing campaigns before going on to win international tournaments for England, they were impossible to avoid - particularly if you watch anything on the BBCAFKABartram said:I must be some form of dinosaur, if you said to me any of those 3 female names I would not have a clue who they were.
I don’t mean to say none of those are arent deserving, just those names mean nothing to me. The only women’s football I've seen in recent years is the 2nd half and pens of that women’s final when on holiday, and I’ve never seen women’s rugby.3 -
Cricket and Rugby U are posh boy sports.Motor Racing is now computer programming on 4 wheels. (Drivers Practice on PlayStation)
Boxing used to be a Sport but Matchroom have put paid to that.
BBC has lost the plot in the last decade. And I can’t say what I really think because I would be removed from CL0 -

All fair enough, wasn’t criticising at all as we can’t all consume everything. Was just saying the general public will have a higher awareness of them than you doAFKABartram said:

Because it tends to be that team sport players only win when they have won, or at least participated in, something significant? There are exceptions, Beckham in 2001 being probably the best example, but if England win the WC next year I guarantee one of the team wins SPOTY (fairly safe in not having to test my theory there).Bedsaddick said:So why hasn’t Kane made the list considering the amount of goals he’s scored for Bayern and England in the last 12 months . The names in the title. Spots personality of the YEAR. So, who had ben best in their sport in 2025. There is a Lifetime Award (or there was), so maybe one day Cook, Anderson or Root might get it.killerandflash said:It's the nature of such awards, that they favour people who have a glorious win or year rather than those who are just really good every year.

If Rory doesn't win it will be a travesty. Not only did he win the Masters, and therefore doing the Grand Slam (which only 5 other golfers have ever a achieved before), he then went onto win the Players Championship (the unofficial 5th Major) the Irish Open and the Pebble Beach classic. To top it off he was part of the European team that won the Ryder Cup in America......and then was crowned the winner of the European Tour.

Chloe Kelly put in the cross for the equaliser and scored the winning penalty so you've definitely seen her in action even if you don't remember her nameAFKABartram said:

There's the world sports star vote on the BBC.
There's 3 people on there that I've heard of. Salah for some reason is nominated, the other two are the boxer Crawford and the Swedish pole vault champion Duplantis
