I find it mad that we're all so negative about re-signing a player who scored some important goals for us in such a short amount of time, brought some fight in to the squad and some championship quality play of which we were missing.

Do I think we should have him as our first choice option upfront? Probably not but can players like Mbick and Leaburn learn from him and we can rely on him to bring experience to our front 2? If we're looking for a player who plays like his style then we would be stupid not to resign someone who fits the Jones model, knows the players and helped us over that line.

So a total of 6 goals in 66 games for a centre forward. I am just interested in what you think Dykes does so well? I don’t think he holds the ball up particularly well or is great in the air. He is a journeyman. When Birmingham got rid of him there was not a queue of clubs vying for his services.
As 2 people have mentioned above.

In half a season with us he got 3 goals and 3 assists in a team that lacked creativity. That stands out straight away.

In his time at Birmingham the stats look awful compared to the reality of what he got in minutes. When you break it down to minutes, it looks a lot better in terms of a return.

Is he a starter? Potentially not. Will our younger players a lot from him? For sure! Has he known to be a prolific forward throughout his career? No that's not his game.

In the modern game we're so use to XG and thinking that every striker needed to be the goal machine. But it's not out of the norm to remember having a front 2 where one is the poacher and the other brings everyone else in to the game. And that's what Dykes would be.

No it doesn’t stand out. The bottom line is he scored 6 goals in 66 games. He is a journeyman and a plodder. We need better.

People keep mentioning Mbick as an option but he's had a bad injury to get over plus he shone for Colchester in League Two. As did Kanu for Walsall. A massive step up to the Championship. Some say Kelman was a flop last season (not me) but the season before he banged in 20+ goals in League One. If people say he flopped then why are they expecting Mbick or Kanu to make the step up from League Two. Best for both of them to loan them out again, if Kanu signs a new deal otherwise cash in now, and see how they progress from there especially Mbick who has had barely half a season at League Two level.

Playing against Curacao right now. Big chance for him to show what he can do in a decent team, against decent opposition ;) Scotland lead 2-1 after 60 mins. And still on the pitch presently.

Edit- assist in the 3rd !! Co-commentator calls it a "great lay-off". (I think he has set up the guy who may seal his place ahead of him)

Thanks. Had just tuned in between chores.

And i did not know this:
    From Wikip:
Curaçao will appear in the finals of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 2026. On 18 November 2025, they topped their qualifying group and qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the smallest nation by both population and area to qualify for the tournament.

800 fans at Hampden Park today according to R5L commentary.

I don’t disagree but I assume you want to sell Miles then as his goals/assists record is similar and is also a plodder.

Was at the match at Hampden earlier. Thought Dykes did ok, couple of decent flick ons for Shankland (including an assist). Presume Shankland will be the main man at the tournament, Dykes may get some minutes from the bench though.

Very amused by the idea that people think we would play markedly different football if we didn't have Dykes in the team. The old 'big man encourages big ball kick' argument has been going on as long as people have been talking about football and it's been nonsense just as long. Teams play planned long balls if it's part of the strategy and play loose, desperate ones when they're panicking. Compare the Gillesphey diagonals of the first half of the 24/25 season to the second for example. We're going to be lumping the ball no matter what. We aren't magically going to change our approach because he isn't in the team. We might choose to change how we play in general but then Dykes showed he was much better with his feet than I think anyone expected when we did give him the ball. Dykes was superb when he first came in and then tailed off, either because he was pulling back for the World Cup or because he got jaded from the genuinely surprising amount of running he put in for the team before that. Jones will know which and will sign or not sign him accordingly. There's a certain amount of snobbery about Dykes I think, modern football fans tend to think they're too good for a player like him but the fact is football is sliding more in the direction of the physical players at the moment than anywhere else.

It also reminds me of the 11/12 season where for, if people look back, a really troublingly long period of time people were complaining that Paul Hayes should come back into the team ahead of Yann because having Yann there encouraged the long ball and we played better football without him. Yann Kermorgant that was. For Paul Hayes. At least this cycle of it is slightly less outrageous.

Personally I don't mind him as an option at all.
Leaburn seemed to be picking up some dark arts from him I thought. I would hope that our attacking signings would include someone who would be an obvious starter along side Kelman and not Lyndon in that role. I wouldn't be surprised to see Dykes go to Hearts too with Shankland going to Rangers.

Overall in the Championship, he's scored around one goal for every five appearances (and I don't know how many of those were starts versus late sub appearances). Over 46 appearances in season, that woukd work out at around nine goals, which actually isn't a terrible return for this division, especially for a player who contributes more to the team than just goals.

Best thing about Dykes is his attitude and he works bloody hard ( until he saves himself for the World Cup) but then fair play if I had his talent I'd do the same. Helped us stay up. Proper bloke

6 goals in 66 games is abysmal whichever way you look at it for a centre forward. Macauley Gillesphey has a better scoring record than that.

How about assists? He got at least as many assists. Unless you think they're unimportant...

In the last 3 league seasons, Dykes has got a combined 13 goals + 5 assists in 5,616 minutes.

A goal contribution every 312 minutes (or 3.46 full games)

You have to really make everything stick if you’re a non scoring striker .  Dykes’ hold up play isn’t that good .
