I also hoping Leaburn Continues getting 80-90% of the minutes not 50-50

Hate the tats, like the stats. Welcome.
since 2020 he's scored about 1 in 5.  Not good imo for a striker. And for someone playing in this side I expect them to be even worse.

But I'll give him a chance before slating him. You'll know by 3.20pm Saturday...... :D
And yet, Leaburn - Carl, not the latest version - only managed 1 in 6 and was described by Mendonca as the best strike partner he had played with. Now, if Kelman ends up saying the same thing.....
There's a saying about puddings and proof but I can't remember it exactly...

I think he will do well, always looked an handful every time I’ve seen him play .

Did Kelman and Dykes play together at QPR ?

I think he's a player who has a place/job in the squad, a bit of muscle and thuggery up front to cover/support Leaburn, not a prolific goal scorer but hopefully Kelman and maybe Godden if/when he finally returns will cover that aspect.

Seems like a Jones kind of player in style and attitude, 6 months gives us time to look at other options in the future when things are less pressing perhaps.

    Next up a LCB/LWB please

it'll give Leaburn a bit of a rest and allow us to rotate in that target man role.

he's really upping our tat game as well !!

Birmingham's own website says he signed a 3 year deal for them in 2024, so given that he would still have 18 months left, i'm not sure how we've managed to sign him for only 6 months.

Either Birmingham gave him a pay off or he was really desperate to leave and get more minutes to try and make the Scotland squad for the world cup.
  • Rich Cawley on Substack..

The length of deal is slightly puzzling in the sense that Birmingham announced they had signed Dykes on a three-year contract when he arrived from QPR in August 2024, meaning that he should still have 12 months left to run on those terms.”

As it means 12 months from the end of this season (so 18 months from now), it,does seem a little odd that he agreed to just 6 months.

As noted by Cawley, the curious thing is that he joined Brum in summer 2024 and signed a THREE year deal, so would have been under contract until the summer of 2027, and not this summer, so has swapped 1.5 years at Brum for 6 months with us.
Sounds like a good deal, i mean would you fancy another 1.5 years in Birmingham!!!

Kudos to @CB1 for saying we'd make a signing today. Spot on

Should hopefully be a convenient deal for both parties
Dykes needs game time and goals to secure his place at the World Cup in the summer
We need someone to score goals to help us survive...  If he does well for us, we can consider looking at a longer deal, if he has a great World Cup then he's got the freedom to go on to better things next season.
Not to mention I know about Clarke and Dykes ahead of writing my Preview for the weekend ;)
    Win for everyone really
Dykes could play zero minutes and he’d be in the Scotland squad for the World Cup

Potentially just gets him off the wage list though as signing him as a League One club I bet meant a fair bit of money for them, Money they've probably got, but a bit like what Wrexham have done with the likes of Ollie Palmer, where they've agreed to just cancel the deal as it'll work out cheaper for them.
Dykes is no doubt happy to do it, for the game time ahead of Scotland's three games in the summer.

Leaburn has been playing really well in recent games, but with his fitness record there is a real danger of overplaying him, and then losing him for 2 months to a muscle injury.

It's one that I don't instantly love but it equally makes complete sense. Last thing we need is Leaburn breaking down with another injury because he's playing too much and it's another experienced championship player in the building. Also let's Mbick stay at Colchester and develop there.

6 month deal is a bit curious but probably makes sense for all parties with the world cup.

A permanent short term deal is an odd one. Given that Jones seemed pretty set on him it implies that either the ownership aren't too psyched to have him or that if we've taken over his contract if we go down we don't want to be saddled with his wages. The most surprising thing about this is I could have sworn he was older than 30. Ultimately though he brings the kind of thing Leaburn does but with a great deal more experience. His job isn't to be prolific but to make sure the play takes place further up the pitch through his hold up play. Worth noting that in L1 he was often chosen ahead of Alfie May in the centre forward position because of the space he'd create for Stansfield behind him. I can see him helping get more out of Kelman, Campbell and Carey and that will hopefully be a good thing

I think Leaburn remains first choice and will start most games, if he keeps playing well. Dykes will probably feature in every game with the odd one being a start. If Leaburn’s form drops or he gets injured then we now have an experienced alternative
  • Tie him down for longer before he wins the golden boot in the summer and Barcelona or Madrid nick him on a free.

I don’t expect him to score that many goals in his half a season here - five would be an excellent return. I think he’ll frustrate a few people in the stands because of that but he’ll work his nuts off to Jones’ plan and that will make us a better team overall.

6 month deal. Was he out of contract with Birmingham at the end of the season?
Cawley mentioned on Twitter that he had 18 months left on his Birmingham deal until 2027 so not sure what happened to the missing 12 months.

Kelman and Dykes are very good mates according to Cawley's substack.

Not sure how you work that out? If he started in August 24, his 3 years would be up in August 27 so circa 7 + 12 = 19 months left? Told he had a falling out with the Brum boss.

I'm expecting him to be used as a battering ram and a physical annoyance and the likes of Kelman to be the primary goal threat (such as it is.) Hopefully it gives Jones some game management options, if we need height or muscle up front it gives us a choice that's not throwing Leaburn at it.

I wouldn’t read anything into that. They may have announced 2027, but the 3rd year may have been provisional on certain appearance / performance achievements. Or they may have paid him up for the extra year.

In his 30s now and approaching end contract. I very much doubt he has done himself out of any dough

Good to get the option up top with Leaburn & Dykes in the mix amongst the game changers.
I've got a feeling this will work for both parties, will probably have a bonus built in if we can survive and be in the champ next year!
Again let's get behind the whole team in the next phase, be great to see LD get an early goal as I believe this will get some much needed momentum👍
