Millwall vs. Charlton Athletic
Saturday 24th January 2026 - 12:30pm Kick-Off
Referee: Gavin Ward

Introduction
If you're a fan of any other club, then I'm sure the sort of fixture we have this coming weekend, the "local derby", is the sort of game that you look forward to in the Football Calendar. I'm sure if you're a fan of the opposition this coming Saturday then you too, must look forward to getting at least something from this encounter. The Addicks, they go into the weekend, looking to bounce back from a first defeat of 2026, having lost 1-2 against Derby on Tuesday night... I'm not going to say it honest... Okay what the hell... Is this year, finally our year?

The Opposition
Name: Millwall (5th) - Manager: Alex Neil
Ground: The Den
Previous League Result: Coventry 2-1 Millwall

If someone had spent the entirety of their live, as non-verbal, then I'm sure even they'd say: "It'll never be Charlton's year" as their first words

The last thing we need as Charlton fans is the prospect of making the short trip up the Old Kent Road where our gleeful neighbours await in eager anticipation. You'd have been mistaken for possibly thinking that a September afternoon in 2025 was finally going to be the year where we defeated our nemesis, it wasn't to be... Sonny Carey would open the scoring five minutes before half time, but a silly sending off for Kayne Ramsay handed the impetuous to the visitors who delivered a crushing, equalising blow, with just two minutes left in normal time.

That encounter saw resulted in Charlton ending the day in 18th, with Millwall just two points above us in 13th - Whilst both clubs went on impressive runs, culminating in the distant possibility of a Play-Off meeting in May, it was Millwall who have been able to sustain their form - The slow start to the season, which saw the Lions win just three of their opening eight games is a distant memory, and Alex Neil has his side chasing the Premier League dream (shudder!!). They come into this fixture in reverse form to the game at the Valley, earlier in the season it was their away form that was impressive, now its their home... Millwall have just the one defeat at home (a 1-3 loss against Hull on 13th December) since the start of October.

Just means that our victory on Saturday will be even sweeter, after all... Nothing last forever*

(*Terms and Conditions apply, any games between Charlton and Millwall are exempt)

Charlton Team News
The January Transfer Window couldn't have opened any sooner, our desperate need to resolve the issue that is the Left side of Defence has hindered our progress this season, and the lack of balance could partly be reason for our recent troubles - Finding the right individual has taken time, but we were welcomed with the news yesterday which saw Luke Chambers joining on loan from Liverpool, the youngster will surely go straight into the squad for this coming Saturday, and regardless whether he starts or not... What a fixture to make your debut.

If Chambers does start, it means that Tyreece Campbell will either return to the bench, or will return to a more natural and more forward role... The Charlton youngster will naturally be looking to continue where he left off against Derby, but will be fighting with Charlie Kelman, Miles Leaburn, Lyndon Dykes and the slowly returning: Matty Godden for one of two spots up front - Elsewhere and the ever reliable; Lloyd Jones was forced off on Tuesday night, let us hope that it was more of a precaution, and we'll see him back and raring to go for this latest fixture.

Kaminski
Clarke - Burke - Gillesphey - Chambers
Coventry - Docherty
Campbell - Carey - Kelman
Leaburn

Substitutes: Mannion - Gough - Ramsay - Fullah - Anderson - Costello - Berry - Godden - Dykes

5-0 Millwall. This is the best side they've had in years and we will have Gillesphey and TC on the left side against Azeez. Not a chance we get anything other than an absolute demolishing.
  • Jones has said he hopes that Lloyd will be available Saturday, and was more of a precaution, its equally why I've left him completely off the teamsheet, otherwise I'd expect him to start in the back four, or even sticking with a back five, and my current line-up is a bit more extreme.
Worth noting that Millwall have scored just five more goals than us, whilst they've conceded one more than us, so would expect another tight game, the first goal is going to be so crucial, as cant see more than a 1-0 or 1-1

I can’t see NJ switching to a back four. Suspect it’ll be Clarke, Ramsay, Burke, Gilly, Chambers. Switch Lloydy for Burke if he’s fit. I’m being wildly optimistic and going for a 2-1 away win mainly because I won’t be there for the first time since about 1980 so they are sure to do it out of spite.

Nathan needs to park 14 men behind the ball, and we might get a draw.

If Jones is fit, and was taken off as a precaution my team would be something like
    Kaminski
    Burke - Jones - Gillesphey
    Clarke - Coventry - Docherty - Chambers
    Carey
    Leaburn - Kelman

Gavin Ward as ref , how many red cards is he going to dish out??? As bad as the likes of Stroud and Kettle.

1-1 draw with a late Godden equaliser.

Trying to decide whether to use a cheese grater to wipe my arse on Saturday, or watch this.

All being well, I will pass out from blood loss to the arse and miss the tonking so win win.

When was the last time we played them with such a gap between us? Surely can’t be many instances of them being in the play offs and us being just outside the relegation spots?

Expecting a back 5 but not sure what happens with TC in that case. He’s been by far our most positive outlet recently so we could be even worse. Unless it means Apter plays on the right, not sure.

Real fear we’re going to get hammered here.

Set up almost like we did against Chelsea and hope for the best.
  • I remember having food poisoning in Egypt. The most agonising cramps, sickness and diarrhoea imaginable. Begging and bartering for medicine. Having as much control over my bowels as Stevie Wonder would driving an F1 car. The towel-art swan looking like it had been dredged from a muddy canal.

I suspect I’ll look back on that experience more fondly than I will this game.

I don't do blind faith or have rose tinted bins, but this is one of the rare occasions I have a strong feeling we're going to win.
The odds and form are against us but I live in hope.
Should we do the business can everybody remember what they have posted recently about Jones.

No chocolate mousse for me tonight after that AFKA burst,  unlikely 1-1 Saturday though.

Don’t know where we were in the table back in 1995 when we beat them 2-0 in the snow but they were top of the table that day then got relegated so let’s hope history repeats itself this season.

Do you know what, it would be so Charlton to win on Saturday, after such a dismal run - yeah I’m going for a CAFC win (and I’m there Saturday)
  •  I really hope we do not play 3-5-2. That will play into Millwalls hands. Long balls to Cooper, Taylor and Crama is not a recipe for success.

Millwalls weakness is balls in behind those big lads and between the lines. 3-4-2-1 which we played in the second half on Tuesday would help exploit their weakness but also keep us strong defensively.

Rivalry and the 30 year record aside, a point at The Den would be a good one. Yes it would mean we haven't beaten them again but a point away at a top 8 team, which sadly they are, is a good one.

Just imagine the scenes if we do win.........COYR!!!

this is only  my 4 th comment on here ,  I can only see a thumping loss on saturday ,  4 nil   at least. Why, they are our bogey team , in the  70 plus years  I have  followed the addicks (through thin and thin), I cant count on one hand the  number  of times    we have  got the better of them.
Secondly They  are  up the  top and playing  well , we  are  down the  bottom and the last  couple of weeks  particularly  are woeful.  I  of  course  would love to be wrong.

As an aside my wifes family were all  Millwall Supporters from  New  Cross and Peckham . Not my wife though  she is one of us , But at our wedding reception my father in law began his  speech" can I   begin by  saying its  currently  Millwall 3  Charlton  1" !
Come on  Charlton give us something  to smile about.
  • So, we’re off to Millwall. A place where we haven’t won for so long that most of us are struggling to remember when it was..... “yes, Charlton did once beat Millwall allegedly.”

On paper? Forget it. Form book? Burn it. Our record there? Honestly, it points to there being no point our players even getting off the team bus. BUT… and this is the bit football lives for that’s not how the game works. There’s no such thing as a guaranteed victory in football ! Nathan Jones won’t have thrown in the towel, nor will Lloydy Jones & rest of our players either, and football has a long proud history of laughing in the face of logic..... Just when everything says “no chance,” football has a strange way of going against the form book.

This is the fixture I’ve been looking forward to for weeks, an away day at The Den. Backs against the wall, nobody giving us a prayer, everyone expecting the worst......why not now? If we only turned up when the odds looked good, what would be the point? This is football. This is Charlton and  maybe, just maybe, this is the time we finally slay the Lions in their Den and finally get rid of the Millwall hoodoo..... What’s not to look forward to?

  • Big win.

The ref hates them more than us so I’m going 4-0 us.

That will be 6 years unbeaten ‘you’ll never beat Charlton’

First time I saw Charlton beat Millwall at The Den I was standing on the Cold Blow Lane end of the Ground. Peter Shaw and Daivid Shipperley were the goal scores that day.

Last time I saw Charlton win against Millwall at The Den was in the snow on 5thDec1995 .

Seen every victory against Millwall in my life time so far , will be watching this game live on television. Can only hope for the best but with our system of play can only see defeat.
3-0 Millwall and fans get held in again.
