“I told the players to be brave - to play with courage - and they did that in the first half. We took the game to them. Our intensity was superb.
“We were very disciplined today. We haven’t got any individual superstars, the whole team is on a level. We have worked so hard on the togetherness and to fight for each other - that is our identity.
Can somebody ask Karen Hills to have a word with NJ

The men's most definitely do not have any superstars.charltonbob said:“I told the players to be brave - to play with courage - and they did that in the first half. We took the game to them. Our intensity was superb.

Whether it's team selection, tactics or a lack of confidence, that result was entirely predictable. In recent weeks we have been very poor against better teams, and Millwall are a better team than us at the moment.
We don't have the creativity to hurt them, but we also don't have the energy and physicality to make things difficult either. The Chelsea cup game was a non event really, on and off the pitch, as we were so passive. Macclesfield showed how a team can make things difficult for better opponents via workrate and organisation.
Against Sheffield United we were nowhere until the sendings off, then scraped to an incredibly edgy win, seemingly petrified of being caught on the break by a team with 9 men. What should have been a confidence boosting comfortable win, became a mentally draining exercise.
As Plan A against better teams isn't working at the moment, surely something different should have been tried on Saturday? Pack the midfield, try and suffocate the game, park the bus, anything to change things up. Come away with a boring nil nil.6 -

Just watched the Braziliance coverage. Spot on summing up at the end of it. What hurts most is getting messages of sympathy from Millwall friends. Bloody sympathy.
I feel envious of the Spanners. It's a well run club with a solid manager and obviously a very good scouting and recruitment team. Crama is a central defender but was class on the right side, linking up with Azeez who was playing at another level on Saturday. Crama also joins the two monster central defenders in causing chaos at corners. Expecting Millwall to make the play offs this season.
I watched the Charlton Women's team on YouTube yesterday afternoon and they had everything the men's team lacked. They work hard for each other, score goals, have a super stopper keeper, and have a "how dare you" look about them when the opposition actually gets a goal. They are winners.
Sadly the men's team is slowly melting away towards the bottom three and it's difficult to see how the downward trend can be arrested. This week could see more new faces arriving but we were saying the January window would be vital back in early December and here we are near the end of the month and no real substantial additions.
The Liverpool lad looks comfortable on the ball and showed some glimpses of pedigree but was withdrawn up half time. Perhaps he needs to get up to match fitness and was thrown into playing to get some match time, but you get that creeping feeling he is another recovering crock who will soon join the queue to the treatment room. As Lee Bowyer says in his illuminating interview on the Managers Podcast, if he got any funds from the Board at this time of year, he knew he would be looking to pick up players surplus to their own clubs or those with a career littered with injuries.
So on we go, and I believe NJ will stay to try and get us over the line. But Portsmouth showed yesterday they are up for the fight and other teams around us will be desperate to stave off the dreaded R word. If our lot continue to capitulate like they did on Saturday, and some players are being dumped for speaking out, then perhaps NJ should walk away and let someone else try to instill some belief and back bone. If NJ believes he can get that bite and fight back into the team, then he better get on with it and we might have half a chance of survival.

Thought that was a bit bizarre, so I gave him a get out by saying his thought process was we would be going for it at least if it was that scoreline (or so you'd hope)se9addick said:

Avoided this thread as I am trying to stop being as negative, but it was a shite afternoon.
The only positive was I met @oohaahmortimer in the flesh and that was like meeting a celeb to me, bigged him up to Petrol Head and Peter Kay & they were having none of it and accused me of "serious glazing". It's just not everyday you meet your hero's is all.
Was really impressed by Millwall as a team, unfortunately a very good side now. Can't see them finishing outside the play-offs.16 -
Yeah you were good to him, gave him a life raft there. I thought he was basically saying that all that really matters is ending the run of us not being able to beat them, drawing or losing is all the same in that context. I don’t agree, but I think that’s where he was coming from.Braziliance said:

Great to meet Braziliance and his friends , he’s a top man who’s mad enough to stick his head above the parapet and get grief when he loves this club as much as anyone .
he puts the hard yards in and is more than entitled to his opinion .
the boys weren’t happy with him talking up my bants cos we argue who’s the funniest in the family (yep I know, weirdos )
told the mrs when we got home we’d hat a chat and she knew you as the fella with the bun !!Always a smile on his face(well most of the time before Charlton take it off )
Keep up the good work and see you around … petrol head dragging me to Leicester Saturday ffs11 -

I have been given some pelters and I know my views get some heat, but I've seen this run coming for months, specifically since Hull away, all the signs have been there.
I said Docherty can't play at this level and now our manager wants him out. I said Apter could never replace Small and play wingback, and he can't. I really emphasised the importance of that run of 3 games of Norwich, Pompey and Blackburn, I was told I was being dramatic for attention, but now people want Jones out for a run of bad results, even though really, that is when alarm bells should have rang.
I personally don't believe he can turn this around. I see a lot of people mention last season as a benchmark and how Jones turned it around, but it isn't the same.
Every team we play now this season, probably wins League 1, barring Sheff Wednesday. We no longer have a top6 budget and squad with the likes of Northampton & Burton to play, we are up against very big clubs with very big budgets.
I truly don't see how we get the 6 wins we probably need to stay up, might sound negative, but it's how I feel.15 -

I don't know much about him other than he's had two lengthy lay offs with his back problem. Our problem is we need a LB/LWB NOW not by the end of the season. Playing just 45 minutes on saturday because we have to manage his minutes is just fucking ridiculous. If he can't play 90 minutes NOW why have we signed him ? I honestly don't think I've ever heard of a more ridiculous situation at this football club. I can't believe there isn't an experienced championship LB out there not getting games at his parent club that wouldn't improve our leaky left side.Callumcafc said:
I’m reasonably confident he’ll turn out to be one of our best players by the end of the season and everyone will be hoping he comes back next year.charltonbob said:

I think we all know that if we do go back down we are mot simply going to keep 2/3rds of our team together and hope to come back up.ozaddick said:
A very good point ooahh, if we went up a season early, as the club has said, then promotion to the championship was clearly marked for this season, relegation would have us regressing more than just a season. It's a big trap door.oohaahmortimer said:Lady Luck was out of town we’ve been performing shit for ages , this result was inevitable considering the reality of what preceded it .
The bluff is over , we are genuinely inept all over the pitch with a minuscule spattering of quality .
The money spent on transfers that do not get much game time is appalling when you consider the mingeyness of the budget .
We have a manager whose histrionics/passion is all well and good when winning a bit but when you’re on the run we are it can only put the players on edge and make them even less likely to take risks, hence our crabbyness and backwards piddling about and no positive attacking intent from most , Campbell apart .
This season has been heading in one direction for a good while and yesterday many could see what those without rose tinted were pointing out a while back, the euphoria of promotion and that crest of a wave that rode us to a good start long gone.
To be beaten by the great unwashed from Zampa New Dirty Den ex East End North of the river scum is nothing new but the gulf in clubs is a joke. We have been a shambles for years on and off the pitch whilst our nearest and dearest are enjoying the best footballing times in their history .
The new norm is wank and we’re a year in front will become a year behind if we get relegated .
There is time to turn this around but it will require wholesale changes somewhere and a massive rethink because we’re on a one way street to league one as it stands .
A great opportunity could turn in to one of the biggest nause ups in Charlton times with plenty of them.
Keep supporting the boys, that’s all we can do as much as we’re fucking complete guff .
There will be some serious departures of some decent L1 players plus the few that we think are just about Champ level (TC/Jones etc).
It will be back to basics time with our youth prospects and other low cost journeymen.3 -

I think this is an excellent post, and I am pleased that there seems to be a consensus among fans that this week has to go extremely well in the transfer market to give us a fighting chance of staying up. This isn’t a request for more money or players from a petulant or spoilt fanbase - this is a fanbase united in the collective desire to not return to the utter misery of League One, and that, bluntly, requires more investment and better players immediately. Rich Cawley put this in very stark terms on the pod on Saturday - this is the last chance we will get to shape the squad for 18 enormous games. It was also a very good point made that ‘one year ahead’ will very quickly become one year behind.Fanny Fanackapan said:

Cloud cuckoo land and/ or empty platitudes.
Actions and tangible evidence is what we need not bizarre unsubstantiated pipe dream rubbish.
We're miles behind Millwall on and off the pitch and light years behind Crystal Palace despite the latter's current soap opera.
Build a competitive Championship squad and fucking shut up with nonsense like 4th biggest team in London. Not even the 4 biggest team in London Borough of Greenwich going by Saturday's clusterfuck.
It's highly likely that the date was arranged for BEFORE the Millwall match so that difficult questions regarding the inevitable outcome of that derby would not be on the agenda.
Regarding the personnel involved, I've never trusted JR . Some of us are aware of the circumstances surrounding the departure of a loyal member of staff at our club a while ago that I wished from Day 1 had been "leaked "....since then, I wouldn't trust this man as far as I could "toss" him. But perhaps that's just my thoughts. Once again, not having an experienced CEO on site daily is to our detriment IMO.
How I wish that Gavin Carter was based in the UK with more day to day issues easier for him to deal with .
Along with all Lifers, I await positive news from the camp to give us some degree of hope for the remainder of this season.
Should the worst happen & League 1 welcomes us back come August, this week's actions /non actions could be cited as the most crucial of the season.
Not to forget that discussions re season ticket prices must soon be on the Board's " to do" list....
In essence, I think we’ve been caught out somewhat. I imagine the bulk of the January window planning was done when we were doing well and, even when the glut of injuries occurred, the expectation would be that once those players came back we would be OK. We could then have a fairly unspectacular and inexpensive window largely clear of a relegation scrap and we could start to give the likes of Apter, Tanto and Knibbs time to bed in ahead of next season and realise the ‘multi window’ growth which was the plan. Problem is, our needs are now so acute and the level of investment required is now so much more significant that we look underprepared and rudderless on and off the pitch - probably because we are. In my view, the Chambers signing epitomises this - he’s clearly got good pedigree, and it’s not his fault at all, but he has played 100 minutes of academy football this season, needs his minutes managed and we put him in for his debut in our one huge problem position for months…away at The Den. Absolutely astonishing.Only a very, very strong week in the market will begin to allay fears that we are sleepwalking back to League 1 - whether that happens is anyone’s guess. I find the talk that Rak Sakyi is completely out of our league very frustrating - he would make an enormous positive difference to us, and quality of that level is always going to be expensive. He’s worth it all day long if we stay up.3 -

I wonder if we had anyone up at Coventry last week to study Millwall. Surely if we did and he was playing they should have realised that Azeeze was their danger man, and what do we do put an unfit Liverpool reserve up against him joke tactics! Is it just going to be loans and frees in this transfer window. Jones should apologise to Apter and Doc and get them back in the team for Saturday as near as the first few games of the season when we were playing much better. our only hope! Seems strange rumours we have lost the dressing room when there are so many of his ex Luton mates involved!

The worst thing about being spanked by them is having to deal with Millwall fans at work on the Monday. The second worst, as somebody else mentioned, is when they give you sympathy for being so shite!
To be fair, the guy I spoke to called it absolutely right: "You looked really poor and I'd be worried about staying up on that showing. Your manager made some odd choices, the only guy who looked good was the number 7 (Campbell) and he got moved into defence!'0 -
