Conor Coady Signs On Loan From Wrexham

I'm on the fence with the idea of signing him permanently. Fee I doubt would be much and I think we'd have to push the wages that way in the summer to get the better quality players. Great character that has added a lot but I don't quite know if I'd sign him permanently or sign a younger CDM to compete with Cov.2

Coady is no Clown and would know that Charlton are not likely to match his contract at the Circus.
Could come down to a choice of warming the bench on more money, or regular game time for a bit less cash.2 -
yes, if we want to progress, we have to pay the going rate - i think we'll see a bit more proven, free agent but big wage type signings in the summer and i think coady and dykes will be 2 of those along with whatever we can do to get Clarke - makes a lot more sense to buy players who have already passed a 6 month trial - we'll also have to tie down our better players on longer contracts on increased terms. I reckon we may also try and cut our losses on apter and olafe and chuck any fees clawed back there into the wage pot. I can't see either coming good / fitting into a Jones side. A Docherty upgrade should be a priority position - he's doing great atm but we won't progress with a player in that position who's so limited on the ball and i think we need to get some more pace in up top and out wide.Scoham said:

If we're going to push the boat out a bit on fees etc a doc upgrade would be where I'd be looking to spend the big money , someone that can get on the ball and get us going forward. Think Dykes and Clarke are really solid additions to make too.DOUCHER said:

Coady, Dykes, Clarke and Chambers have all hit the ground running and been fantastic additions to the squad.
It's almost like the SMT actually know what they are doing.6 -
Think there’s a decent chance Wrexham just pay him off in the summer and we pick him up on a free7
-
Wrexham are not out of the promotion picture by any stretch. Currently 6th so they could easily find themselves in the playoffs and then who knows. They’ll either be a Prem side next year or will strengthen again in the summer if they’re not. I’d imagine Coady will be surplus whichever.NabySarr said:Think there’s a decent chance Wrexham just pay him off in the summer and we pick him up on a free0 -
Not recently, and certainly not in the final few minutes of the game, because he sits far deeper naturally than Docherty does.Leuth said:
Like, have you never seen Coventry be the one to run the whole field and close the goalie down? I mean, you absolutely have, because he does it quite oftensam3110 said:
I don't think so, Coventry doesn't have the engine of Docherty, or the dogged determination and leadership.wmcf123 said:
Coventry lacks the positional know-how that Coady brings . I do think Coventry could do what Docherty is doing , better .Scoham said:Feels harsh on Coventry to lose his place as I'm not sure he did a lot wrong, Jones did say he was playing through injury.
Coady deserves to keep the spot though - for a player who's legs had apparently gone, he's played two lots of 90+ minutes as a holding midfielder in the Championship and helped us keep 3 clean sheets. He obviously doesn't have pace, but you don't perform like that without having the fitness and commitment to compete at this level to go with his quality and experience.
On 89 mins last night the ball was cleared long, and TC and Dykes both kind of stood there and didn't press it at all, and it was Doc who ran 60 yards just to get in the face of the Stoke players so they had to hurry the long ball forward.
Coventry would have been holding station in front of the back 3 on the edge of his own box
It was said that Coventry would do what Doc is currently doing, but better, and I'm arguing against that point, because whilst they play in the same overall position for us, they're very different players in how they go about the game0 -
Coady will likely know that he’s coming to the end of his career and won’t be able to command £25k a week until he retires. He’s also had a long career in the top flight so wont be short of a bob or two.He may decide that he’s keen to just keep playing and take less wages. I doubt he needs the money3

It's almost as if loans work better short term, than long term gambles do.
We got there in the end, if they had played that hand in the summer we'd probably be in the play offs !

Play the game, Wrexham probably won't be keen on him regardless of what division they're in next season.
Think it'll be his final year contract wise, unlikely anyone will pay for him and they'll want the squad space and wages try for a season long loan with a chunk of his wages should we be interested in bringing him back.0 -

From Cawley's interview with Chambers, Coady's working on his coaching badges. Continuing to play and maybe even get involved in coaching (even if not officially his role) could only help him with his ambitions to stay in football.4 -
May be unpopular but don’t want him permanently. He’s been brilliant for us but feels like a player we desperately need now whilst we’re scrapping rather than what we need to progress and take us forward. He’s going to be 33 next week he’s not getting younger and whilst his legs aren’t gone yet u can tell he’s slowing, despite being good I wouldn’t pay him the wages that say you’re the star man even if he is a great character to have in the background.Thank him for his service and look forward7
-
I'm the same. He's come in and is doing an excellent job, organising, getting on the ball and moving it positively. What he has done is show us exactly the sort of player we need in our midfield, I'm hoping now that we go out and buy such a player over the summer (yes I know that ain't easy!).Crispywood said:May be unpopular but don’t want him permanently. Actually was on the Luke Chambers thread that Coady was being driven around by Chambers.Chizz said:

If Wrexham give him a pay off to get him off their books i'd take him on 1 year deal. Could probably get him for 15k a week and he'd be good to have around the squad to have as experienced cover.Crispywood said:May be unpopular but don’t want him permanently. I do agree we should absolutely be looking to sign someone younger for that role though.1 -
Me either, but it is going to be a huge difference and even for someone not happy not playing, i reckon itd be too big to turn down. Lets say he has a 25% increase on promotion to the Prem (pure conjecture, but id be surprised if he didnt have close), thatd be over 31k per week. I cant see us offering much more than 10k per week, that is a difference of over million quid for the yearScoham said:

Wrexham would almost certainly have to give him a pay off to go, or they'd just loan him for the year with us covering a % like we are now.CAFCsayer said:

I don’t disagree mate but £15k a week for cover is another example (if needed) of how much football is fuckedChris_from_Sidcup said:

For all the praise Wrexham get for what there owners do, I don't believe they're very good at selling players. Might be wrong, but I think most people leaving have gone for much lower fees or the club have had to pay off contracts to get rid.As said, might be wrong, but if above is correct, could help us, in that they end up paying off Coady's contract, and we are free to negotiate one with player which fits us and him. If we and him even want that.1

You’re bang on the money, they massively overpay on wages and then struggle to move players on because of itstoneroses19 said:For all the praise Wrexham get for what there owners do, I don't believe they're very good at selling players. Wrexham seem to sign players with enough quality to achieve their short term goals with little thought to building a squad for the future and there’s a need to spend and discard every window. Might be very myopic but it’s served them well over the last few seasons. Who would bet against them achieving Premiership status over the next season or two.2
