POST-MATCH THREAD: West Bromwich Albion v Charlton Athletic: Tuesday 24th February 2026: KO 19:45
This one got off to a slow start but the Addicks looked comfortable and West Brom looked quite hopeless and devoid of both ideas and ability. It’s precisely these kinds of games that Charlton seem unable to raise their intensity for, despite how important it is to keep gaining points on those below us and in such obviously fragile positions.
Lloyd Jones went off on about 33 minutes, after trying to play through a knock to his knee or ankle, replaced by Collins Sichenje.
The Baggies scored just before halftime with a George Campbell free header at the back post. Sichenje and Kaminski seemed to get in each other’s way on the post; if so, the second such ball to creep past two Charlton players and into the back of the net in recent weeks. The goal came as a dagger after a poor quality first half from both sides.
A change was made at halftime with Nathan Jones electing for the pace of Tyreece Campbell over the height and strength of Miles Leaburn. On 51 minutes, West Brom had a bit off decent play after a poor back pass that resulted in a very good chance right in front of goal that was put inexplicably wide. That near miss didn’t seem to impact the visitors’ sense of urgency, as West Brom, still quite hapless, had the bit between their teeth.
Not having seen any improvement, Nathan Jones made two further changes, bringing on Conor Coventry for Conor Coady and Jayden Feverier for Luke Chambers. With these changes also came a change in formation, with four at the back. By 60 minutes, the atmosphere in the going had changed. Whereas the visiting support made most of the noise up until that point, the home support began to shake off their nerves and made more of a sustained effort. The Baggies had woken up. Conversely, Charlton then began a brief period of sustained pressure, but ultimately it came to nothing. And time was running out.
It didn’t look like an equaliser was coming until a bit of patient play saw Kayne Ramsay drive a beautiful ball through to Lyndon Dykes. West Brom tried to step up and play him offside but they got it wrong and Dykes’ touch was exquisite, leaving him one-on-one with the keeper. As at the weekend, Dykes eyed up the keeper and slotted it firmly past him and into the back of the net (this time, it wasn’t ruled out!).
With renewed vigour, the Addicks set out looking to find a way to rescue this performance. And the visiting supporters were once again “making all the noise”.
On 85 minutes it was the home side that had a golden opportunity in the box that went askew. Then again they had a couple of chances they should have done better with, including one in the final minute of regular time and one a couple of minutes into the three additional. Boos rang out from the home fans as the final whistle was blown.
Charlton didn’t lose when it seemed for long periods that we would. It was a poor goal to concede, from a set piece scenario that we usually defend well. Lyndon Dykes bailed us out with a very good finish through the keeper’s legs that was conjured from a West Brom mistake and a very good pass from Kayne Ramsay.
Lloyd Jones’ injury was unfortunate but Collins Sinchenje put in another commendable shift as he adapts to the new league in a new country. A point more helps, and other results tonight have largely gone our way, though obviously it was a poor game and a shame that we couldn’t fully capitalise on the occasion.
West Brom 1 Charlton 1
Over to you.

I just want to say that was a splendid effort from West Brom and Erik Ramsay, I hope they extend his Contract tomorrow35

The good news is West Brom dropped 3 points tonight that they really should’ve had. They won’t play a worse side all season.
I can’t even begin to go into all the issues with that performance.
Ramsay really stepped up second half and Dykes took his goal superbly.Unbelievably lucky to get anything from that, but let’s take the point and move on.48 -
Take the result 100%, but that was a shocking watch. Hopefully we see the end of dykes leaburn partnership. We move11

A point gained on Pompey and Blackburn. Like last week... another game gone and 7 points clear. Shit performance. Smash Wrexham on Saturday and we're larfin.17
-
Shite game but at least we didn't lose, thought Cov, Fev, Ramsay, Collins & Bell were all decent tonight. TC was pretty crap sadly imo2
-
A genuinely terrible performance. I have no idea how we've stolen a point there.15
-
Surely that’s the end of the Dykes/ Leaburn combo from the start, a point more to the total, it needs to be better, if we play like that Saturday we get ripped a new one, Wrexham are playing with too much confidence. We aren’t playing with any going forwards.8

A must not lose and we didn’t but that was utterly abysmal.West Brom by far the better team.Fevrier was terrible, had a fridge on his back and 50p boots on.Sichenje is not ready.Never want to see Leaburn and Dykes up front together again. Dykes is actually a quality player, very impressed by him. It’s terrible and ugly football but looks like it will keep us up by the skin of our teeth. However I expect much much more and better football next season. Otherwise what’s the point.Funny to be so annoyed after the result we prayed for but that performance was shocking. It’s a results business though. Goodnight.24

I love this club but I really don't enjoy watching us play football, apologies for being so blunt but please tell me I'm not the only one. I like grittiness as much as the next person, but God am I sick of this season's long balls.41

We're tough to watch but it's another point towards safety. Let's keep going.8

Jesus that was genuinely awful to watch. A point is however a good result for us.It’s becoming less and less fun watching Charlton at the moment13
-
Just when you think that we can’t play any worse then we do exactly that.
Saturday could get bad!9 -
End of the day it’s a point and no ground made up by those beneath us. Was it enjoyable? No. Is it sustainable? Probably not. But let’s just hope it’s enough to get us through to the Summer.5
-
Norwich have a gimme tomorrow against Wednesday so we'll drop down a place.
A shocking game that we should have lost, still a long way to go before safety.7 -
Will take that draw all day long but my god are we poor. We look awful going forward and are limping over the line at the moment.
I'd definitely try and keep Dykes in the summer and we need a whole new midfield if we want things to improve next season.7 -
Jones has signed a bloke who can't run and played him ahead of our best midfielder for a month for what I assume are motivational reasons. Hungry, Angry CC is going to be an important asset from here on out11

Is it safe to come out from behind the sofa yet?15

Second Tuesday in a row where I can’t believe how badly we played. Take a point all day long there. I thought West Brom looked decent tonight - well up for it, and a decent amount of quality on the ball. A player like Mowatt would be so handy for us. Dykes looks an excellent signing, much better than I expected. A smash and grab point for sure - we did not play well at all, and lacked control all over the pitch1

A tough watch but a passable result that maintains our 7 point cushion. Please no more Dykes and Leaburn, it just causes the whole defence to bypass midfield and hoof it every time. Dykes and Ramsay had good games, Sichenje blew hot and cold, Chambers and Clarke anonymous at best and shaky at worst. Didn't think Docherty or Coady were particularly effective and Coventry improved us when he came on. On to the next one v Wrexham and what I sadly feel will be a pasting.0

Tbf I disagree, thought the big Kenyan battled and had some decent moments. Hard to replace Lloyds presence in the middle but didn’t think he did too badlyCAFC_boi said:A must not lose and we didn’t but that was utterly abysmal.West Brom by far the better team.Fevrier was terrible, had a fridge on his back and 50p boots on.Sichenje is not ready.Never want to see Leaburn and Dykes up front together again. Didn't win the must win but we're still not relegated, not sure how that works?
The football is poor and I hoped and expected better tonight but I'd have taken a draw if you'd offered it to me this morning. No one gained any ground on us today so instead of Leicester having to make up 7 points in 13 games they have to do it in 12. I'm taking that as a decent night for us on the whole20 -
We looked bereft of ideas. Their goal from the corner told a story as they seemed to be first to every header after Jones went off injured (ankle).
We had 11 men on the pitch but I'm not sure anyone in front of the defence he'd met before tonight (or so it seemed) as they didn't seem to want it pass a ball to each other......and then Ramsay threads a ball to Dykes and it's 1-1.
A game that was an awful watch BUT a crucial point in the big scheme., maybe more important than the Saints point that was celebrated so much, by so many.
Well done the travelling faithful. Difficult to get enthused about much on the pitch for so long, but the songs were heard loud and clear.
Sichenje had another game under his belt and put in some crucial tackles.

We have a point, but the less said about this game the better0

Stay away from the match thread for a night and everyone is being so negative 😉
Yes we were shit but couldn’t care less. We got the point I felt we needed and it’s a big point. Keeps the gap to West Brom and Blackburn lost a winnable game too.
Jones injury the biggest worry of the night for me.14 -
As David Lloyd would say….
Start the car4 -
If we do survive this season there needs to be a complete change of playing style for next term.
We have been well and truly sussed out and will not get anywhere near 50 points next season playing like that.10 -
Poor. Hope it improves.0
-
Also, I thought Coventry had a point to prove when he came on. Should definitely be starting next game.11
-
Thoughts our subs done well but frustrating when we scored that we don't put some pressure on. WBA would have been low on confidence but we just sat back and let them grow back into the game again.
Scores below us were good tonight but it does need to improve ASAP!
With Jones injury, id play Bell and Ramsay at CB and start the game with wingers against Wrexham.1 -
Sichenje impressed me today, particularly given the circumstances. Good awareness, athleticism, going for the first and second balls. What's really surprised but very welcome is his passing is a lot better than I expected, found players a few times from unlikely positions.38
