He said admirers! Could be my natural pessimism, but that sounds a bit like we want but can't afford.TeeC said:Cawley reporting our interest in JRS is genuine in his roundup
Could also be that I'm a grumpy old man!5 -
Presumably we would have had to have kept our powder very dry to afford JRS on a fee.2
-
Still maintain and will not change my opinion that we can and should do better than wrexhams keeper.
We don’t have the money of Wrexham but we have the ambition so why should we have somebody not good enough for an equally as ambitious team?5 -
Also… I would rather Roberts than Carey and Knibbs as a No.10 👍🏻1
-
I think Pat Roberts could be good for us, a nice opportunity to offer the player a move back to his hometown since leaving Fulham which as we've seen can really help players feel comfortable and unlock performances, he's better than Apter at the moment. Wouldn't be mad about that one at all4
-
Patrick Roberts is another well known name that actually isn't very good imo. He had one good season for Celtic about 10 years ago and has bounced around being underwhelming everywhere else.4
-
If you see an opportunity to improve your team and it’s within budget it’d silly not to go for it, Wrexham’s budget is bigger than ours and they see that opportunity so they are going for it, the knock on effect is we now have the opportunity to improve our squad within our budget so we hopefully go for it.LTKapal said:Still maintain and will not change my opinion that we can and should do better than wrexhams keeper.

JRC being in the squad (when Doc didn't make it), and then coming on (and being effective) ahead of Knibbs and Mwamba was pretty significant, as in pre season he didn't play much, and looked like someone on the fringe who wouldn't be needed and thus likely to depart.fenaddick said:I won’t quote your post @Sage so as not to clog up the thread. I agree with you about why JRC was brought on ahead of Knibbs but it still creates an interesting debate about if JRC goes or not. Let’s imagine he does and Ouma takes over the role of either Chalobah or Coventry. Then we find ourselves in a similar situation, game in the balance and needing control in the midfield but with that player in the 10. Who do you bring on? Knibbs isn’t a controlling player and I wouldn’t want Mwamba, Doc or Cov/Chalobah playing there either. There’s the option of moving Ouma up but that doesn’t seem to suit his game.
Is there a chance that JRC is actually a really useful balancing midfielder? Not one who will start often but who can come on for the last half an hour and help us get some control while being able to pick a pass?
That doesn’t mean that Knibbs should go out, maybe it increases the chance that Doc will. It just changed the framing of the decision for me
I don't expect Knibbs to go, but if we got a good bid for him, I think NJ would be happy to take the money. I suspect the same is true of Apter and Kelman, as I don't think any of them are NJ "favourites".1 -
Should we make a play for Nick Pope? Apparently he's been told he is surplus to requirements at Newcastle.11
-
I’m not sure it’s true that we have the same level of ambition as Wrexham. If they finished 12th the manager probably gets sacked. If we finish 12th we’d build a statue of him!LTKapal said:Still maintain and will not change my opinion that we can and should do better than wrexhams keeper.

My bigger concern is that I’m not sure that Okonkwo is actually that good.5 -

Realistically very little chance he goes to the Championship IMODONVANVLIET said:Should we make a play for Nick Pope? Apparently he's been told he is surplus to requirements at Newcastle.7 -
Would be amazing but appears to be on £60k a week at Newcastle. No chance we can afford even half his wages.DONVANVLIET said:Should we make a play for Nick Pope? Apparently he's been told he is surplus to requirements at Newcastle.1 -
Just looked at Patrick Roberts stats and they are very under whelming and he’s 29. We need some hungry young players with potential to improve and a good sell on value4
-
Only if he's feeling very charitable and essentially wrote off 3/4 of his salaryDONVANVLIET said:Should we make a play for Nick Pope? Apparently he's been told he is surplus to requirements at Newcastle.2 -
For me I think it’s quite clear. We know Kanu and Asiimwe will leave, that takes it to 26. Ignore the Kaminski and goalkeeper stuff as that’s a 1 in 1 out. So we need two more to go to bring in a right winger.fenaddick said:I won’t quote your post @Sage so as not to clog up the thread. Docherty has a year left on his contract and it doesn’t look as though we will be willing to renew it. Coventry’s in the same boat but I think the club are happy to assess his performances and where we are by the summer. Rakin-Costello still has 3 years to run, he was signed for a reason and Jones has said time and again he is important for us going forward. So for me I think Docherty leaves.
The question is more who is the 4th to allow us to sign what I hope ends up as Rak-Sakyi. Right now, I think Apter is 4th choice and bringing in Rak-Sakyi would push him further down the pecking order, and for us and him it’s vital he also gets enough game time so maybe a loan out might be beneficial for all parties as long as he plays.
I guess it’s a good position to be in. I’d rather be in this position than scrambling for enough players in the last 2 weeks of the window.16 -
We definitely can't afford him but I don't see where he goes in the PL. It's either Scotland, Europe or top end Champ but it's a bit late for any of those reallyTheHerminator said:

Would be very surprised if either of those left. Think Carey's drop off last season has probably warned off any suitors for now.AberystwythAddick said:
Unless one of Knibbs or Carey is off then no I can’t see it eitherMarcusH26 said:
Would be a weird one, don't really see where he'd fit in at all.SheedyCAFC said:Allegedly we’re one of 4 clubs interested in Bolton’s John McAtee
I know I have turned into Carey's flag waver but this is exactly the time I would put in a cheeky bid in for Sonny if I was at another Championship club.
He had 8 goals by February in the Championship before fatigue set in but I have seen signs especially in the Cheltenham match but also against Derby that with our set up now he can score 10 goals this season either from a start or as a game Changer.
He needs to practice, practice and stay behind in some afternoons to get back to the danger he was and can be again.
He either fluffed his one chance in the box, or didn't receive the ball when he lost his marker. Maybe a tenuous touch when he went down in the box but the clumsy tackle on TC was a cert pen down the CE.
NJ and I believe in him(more important than the gaffer believes!)and the invitations 😃 will soon go out again to Carey when his mojo returns. I love seeing players run forward with the ball and attempt shots I don't want the ball recycled back to our keeper from the edge of the opponents area anymore.
He does pass as well as shoot and has shown that in the two games so far.
Anyone who plays in the middle of the 3 has to be capable of 10 goals in the Championship and who else can do that at CAFC or could we afford to buy ?

In TC’s case I suspect it’s because so many Charlton fans really want him to do well and have become invested in him succeeding. He’s got a lot of talent and it becomes a bit frustrating if it looks like his natural languid style comes across as if he’s not bothered at times.jondon76 said:
Won't make any difference to the boo boys if he makes mistakes look how TC gets slated and hes still learning his trade.MrBurns said:Okonkwo would be a step up on the keepers we already have and he's still young learning his trade at 24.He’s a player that really does need his teammates to keep playing the ball to him which, last season, they weren’t doing so much because they were more often than not defending the Alamo. This season has started well for TC because Nathan and his team seem to have got it exceptionally right with the players they’ve brought in. TC isn’t the only one feeling the benefit of that. Coventry looked like a different player on Saturday with shades of Kinsella in his play; and even Lloyd Jones after a few shaky early passes in the cup game has realised he no longer will have to be the last chance saloon guy for defence, to the extent against Derby he must have thought fuck it I might as well go and get a goal in my free time.1 -
There’s probably an argument at 24/25 he has a lot of room to improve, especially being a GK who’s only played in the Championship for one season. The same has been debated on here about many of our players, even those slightly older such as Coventry.LTKapal said:Still maintain and will not change my opinion that we can and should do better than wrexhams keeper.

Wrexham with their budget allowing them to sign £8m GKs don’t have the patience for that.

figures I hearing from a palace fan would say we would have to keep it dry for a few years ..

Palace were initially looking for around 10m for JRS, would imagine it is why we are waiting until the end of the window hoping palace accept a lower offer as it’s likely the last time they will be able to get anything meaningful for him. I expect he’ll end up going somewhere for 4-6m in a few weeks time, hope it is us but if Burnley are genuinely keen would expect him to end up there.17
-
If he has any sense he'd come here instead of Burnley. He'll earn less now but he'll have more chance to develop and he'll play a lot more. If Burnely go up he'll be on the loan carousel again, come to us and he can work his way up the ladderCovered_End_Lad said:Palace were initially looking for around 10m for JRS, would imagine it is why we are waiting until the end of the window hoping palace accept a lower offer as it’s likely the last time they will be able to get anything meaningful for him. Yeah this is very much the last chance for them to get a good fee for him so I expect them to take the best offer on the table that'll probably be Burnley.Covered_End_Lad said:Palace were initially looking for around 10m for JRS, would imagine it is why we are waiting until the end of the window hoping palace accept a lower offer as it’s likely the last time they will be able to get anything meaningful for him. I wouldn’t be paying anything like 4-6 mil and 10 is just madness . What is the justification? He had a good loan spell with us but he didn’t exactly pull up any trees a Stoke or Sheffield United and he’s definitely not going to break in the Nigel’s first team .18 -
Rich has put up an article on Okonkwo but already replied in the comments to someone that it’s not because a deal is close. Includes thoughts from a Wrexham fan on his strengths, weaknesses, why he’s likely to leave etc.3
-
Just read Rich Cawley's review of Arthur Okonkwo (is it suggestive he has put that out at all?) and I must say, he sounds like just what we need - big guy and great shot-stopper, who needs to develop, particular in his distribution.
We don't ask our keepers to get involved in playing it around at the back, and we have a strong defence for him to develop behind. Might be perfect all round.2 -
I have heard a lot of noise that suggests this could very well happen soon.TeeC said:Cawley reporting our interest in JRS is genuine in his roundup40
