Knibbs' workrate is pretty much all he's got, he's definitely more of a presser and harrier than Carey is, and was known for it at Reading especially, chasing lost causes, pressing defences and winning it high up the pitch. It's not so much of Carey's game, he tends to drop into the centre of the pitch a bit more out of possession.

Carey gets such harsh treatment on here. Probably the same lot eating their hat over TC.

I like Carey but he is not a 10. Yes he runs well with the ball and is proactive but atm lacks the ability to lift his head and realise better options around him. He was guilty of this in the Derby game and again painfully clear on Saturday

I’ve seen milk turn quicker than Knibbs.

Yeah I'd have Knibbs over Carey as a workrate monster
Has he even ran for 90 minutes for us yet? I’m sorry but that’s a ridiculous statement

Carey started 40 games last season and clocked up 10km+ in most of them. He’s got a phenomenal work rate

Looking forward to Knibbs having more involvement this year. I think playing behind a central striker with his physicality suits the system. He and Carey will do a decent job there good to have a choice of both.

Single-handedly kept us up last season, without his goals we would have certainly gone down. Such a weird take.

An average of 3.2 total ball recoveries per 90 minutes places Sonny Carey slightly below the positional average for modern attacking midfielders in the EFL Championship. The average at this level is 3.5-4.5 per 90.
Carey was in the top 16% of championship midfielders for possession won in the final third last season. That is a much better measure of pressing ability than recoveries which is where you’d expect a Coventry to be excelling

His distance covered stats are also ridiculously good given how much he played last season. He covered more ground per 90 minutes than any of our other regular players

I’m sorry but you are very wrong on this

    Carey’s strengths are twofold:

    1. long throws

    2. popping up on the edge of the box with goals that win points that an otherwise poor team didn’t deserve - think West Brom, Southampton and Sheff Utd last season.

That said, I don’t think he helps us control games at all. In fact I’d say the opposite, he’s chaotic and that helps when you’re often the underdog.

As we hopefully continue our evolution, the next stage of us becoming a dominant team at this level will probably necessitate getting someone in who provides more guile in crucial moments of games.

I will be pleased and relieved if JRS signs, as I think he will strengthen our first XI, and we are unlikely to sign anyone else as good at this late stage of the window.  However, in an ideal world, I would rather we had signed, for a similar amount of money, Jordan Holsgrove, or someone of that ilk, as we will still be left with a paper-thin midfield that will look vulnerable if Chalobah is injured. And that was obviously NJ's strategy for the window, too.

On another matter, why has no report been posted of our u18's 3-1 win over Huddersfield on Saturday?
We also have Ouma to come in Mwamba can be a wildcard and Coventry don’t want to jinx it looks better when he’s not being paired with Docherty.

The midfield improvement could be much better than what it looks like on paper, whereas we have one natural RW in Apter who after his L1 stint no guarantee steps up and Grant who looks like he can do a job in multiple positions anyway

Think a RW was definitely a priority based on what we’ve seen so far
NJ has been saying another RW was priority all summer.

I'm not for a moment saying Carey is lazy btw, but Knibbs is actively known for his workrate in his career so far.

You can't just base it on what he's done for us when half fit and then injured

Carey is still young and will get better, I find it a bit ingenuous that people are focusing on the part of his season that dropped off, over the absolutely blinding part of the season he had, this indicates he has the quality and deserves a bit of support and trust. He is still the best we have in his position at the moment and IMO should start until someone challenges and does better than him. Not sure who people think is available that is better than him. Also can’t believe after 3 wins people are considering changing the team for our league games.
All people are saying is that he could be better if occasionally when he is carrying the ball upfield he looked up and tried to lay off a pass to a teammate before he gets blocked off. He has some good attributes but there is  room for improvement.

It may sound overcritical given his good performances in the past 3 games, but I don’t think it is unfair to also say that Campbell still needs to improve on his crosses not that he had many opportunities against West Ham.

TC has deleted the snapchat story
The club probably told him off 🤣
No doubt, NJ has dropped him for the next match  :p

Add ball carrying, work rate out of possession, pressing and then you’ve got quite a good player there. To limit his game to long shots and long throws is a ridiculous comment

Yes he could be better with his decision making and when to pass or shoot, but he’s only 25 so there’s plenty of development left in him. He can easily be a part of our evolution and future years

Reallt good read from NTT20 recently on the number 10 position and the championship. You don’t put your crafty creative ball players in the 10 position anymore. The championship midfield area there is too crowded to get the best out of those players. Those players now play deeper or out wide where there is space for them to get on the ball. That’s why we tried to sign Holsgrove to be our primary ball player and creator.

Any updates on JRS or TC's new contract that seems to be taking about 10 years to announce? I'm sure there's a more suitable thread for debates about Knibbs or Carey ffs

Carey has a lot to improve on no doubt, but people calling for Knibbs to replace him is absolutely barmy, Knibbs if he did get a chance has a damn site more to prove than Carey, which is why Carey should be keeping his place. If Carey did all things people suggest he improves on, he wouldn’t be wearing a Charlton shirt for long. This isn’t football manager where you just try things out and hope it works, over all Knibbs has be a bit of a let down for us, I was expecting more of him, he hasn’t really produced enough yet.

He also said it was close last Saturday...It'll be 500 years in the future with the last nuclear missles launched between Russia and the United States with the whole world in ruin, and Nathan Jones ' ghost will still be saying that TC is close to signing

Feel like Burke is the one to offload for squad numbers. Even if it's on loan to League 1 and we cover a reasonable chunk/most of his wages. Talking of getting rid of JRC, Carey or Knibbs seems very stupid to me.

Without Burke we'd have Jones, Billy, Mesik, Collins with Ramsay & Bell that can do a job in a back 3.

Not to mention all the ripped up contracts in the waste paper basket.
  • I wonder if delay is more Palace side than JRS. Possible they want more upfront and we are keen for it to be more add-ons, and they are hoping someone else comes in and says here’s £5m immediately.
Seems to be the case IMO
There’s no downside to the waiting on a better offer, especially if they think we won’t just walk way and sign someone else. And even if they do, JRS would still have to decide it was better for him as well. I’m sure he’s a starter for us, so I’m not sure he want to go somewhere where he h would be the backup, unless they offered him really silly money
