Are Coventry, Docherty, and JRC competing for places in the team?
JRC might be at the least a reliable enough midfielder next season.
Seems to have a bit of a 'footballing brain' if that makes sense, but not so much brawn.

I think Jones is talking up Mwamba in the same way that he did with Fullah. Both definitely have promise but we saw with Fullah that, bar a few great touches, he struggled to make an impact.  Hopefully they both continue their progression and come through, but we definitely need to spend on established quality in the midfield if we are to evolve the way Jones wants us to.
    Totally agree with this.
With fullah, gets talked up a lot all the time, i cant put my finger on it but just havent seen anything much, maybe one glimpse. Maybe needs a loan.
Mwamba everytime i see him looks like he can do it.

apart from the goal on opening day, not seen anything from knibbs when he has played.
Apart from the two other league goals he scored.

Knibbs was the biggest disappointment last season for me.

Not because he was bad but because injuries meant he never had a long run in the team and rarely started.

He had stood out for me at Reading so was hoping for more but he didn't get the chance to show his ability.

Fingers crossed this year he can.
Yes feel the same with knibbs, I expected more from him all round, I thought he was more of a ball player than we’ve seen, obviously has an eye for goal but other than that it was more industry than finesse, which applies to the majority of our midfielders.hope it’s because of the disruption last season. Big start to the season for him I think.
If you’ve watched any of Knibbs at Reading and Cambridge previous to us signing him, he has zero technical ability he’s a box crashing attacking midfielder who is physical works hard and pops up in good places round the box to score.

Don’t expect any signs of technical ability from him next season he’s not that type of player and that’s not how Jones likes his attacking midfielders.

Still think we need 2 CM's, a replacement for Dykes and 2 RWB's.
We don't need two rwbs if we are playing four at the back. We need a rb and a right winger

Trouble is, it’s what we are desperately missing, someone to be calm and supply the bullets, that would make the likes of knibbs a lot more effective. I don’t really know why I had it in my mind he was more of a baller than he is.🤷🏻‍♂️

Not sure about Redmond.  I might be incorrect in where he’s likely to play, but I always thought of him as an attacking midfielder and taking the game to opponents.  If we get him in, I feel like we’re not going to bother with anyone else and for me, along with more a pacey brick shithouse and rwbs, this is a key position

Carey and Knibbs I see as the goal scoring midfielders, but unless we get a pacey/attacking RWB, TC is still the only player we have that can take on players and run at them, plus Redmond.  We need stronger in this position imo
Knibbs is definitely not up to it and Carey was not second half of last season. I would rather neither were in the first 11.
Jury still out on Knibbs for me given his campaign was hit by injuries, but he needs a big season.

Carey, his goals were priceless, but I agree with you re: 2nd half of the season.  Looked very much like a passenger
Knibbs is not injured now and has made zero impact in three friendlies
Friendlies mean very little. About minutes and fitness. Nothing more.
Not sure that’s totally true.  You’d hope he’d have a point to prove after last season’s debacle .
You mean getting injured ? Unfortunate yes. Debacle is just a ridiculous comment.
I more meant arriving so ludicrously unfit and barely being able to play .  Thanks for your critique though .

I think he got injured in pre-season at Reading so wasn't involved in their training much and came here trying to catch up and then a horror tackle injures him and basically ruins his season, really hoping we see a step up from him as he's been back it for a few months now, whilst he hasnt stood out at all in a Charlton shirt so far, I think he's got real potential to surprise a lot of our fans this season
If he is any good it certainly will be a surprise.

I thought knibbs looked quite good at the end of last season. Felt a lot sharper than he ever did before he got injured and physically a lot stronger. Think he might surprise a few people with a full pre season behind him.

Rich Cawley reporting we’ve turned down bids for Kanu and we’ll either keep him or sell him
    Weird one with Kanu.

If we were being linked with him after the season he's had, young player of the season, 15 goals, being only 21 and if you look at the quality of some of the goals, I think we would be quite excited.

I think it would be a mistake to let him go. These strikers like Kanu, Mbick, Kelman and Leaburn could be the real deal if we work on our actual footballng ability in the middle.

You look at all of their goals they've scored and the technique is there, just not the opportunities to get the goals.

I think we should be signing him on a long term contract and putting every penny into right back and midfield.

Godden, Kelman, Kanu, Grant, Campbell, Miles and Mbick are very decent forward options at this level. They just need the service imo.
I don’t disagree with your verdict but for Kanu he needs to play at this stage of his career. If he sticks around here he just won’t play enough with the number of forwards we have

I’m sure we’d like to get him on a new contract and loan him out again, but Kanu is probably now at the stage where he wants to play for a club he’s signed for permanently, so if he can’t get the game time here he will leave

If Kelman is out for the start of the season then I actually think Kanu would be the most like for like option to replace him, and therefore probably start wouldn’t he?

I think he’d be behind Leaburn, Godden and now Grant in the pecking order to be the main striker. Decent chance we keep Kanu around a bit longer though now Kelman is injured

All things being equal. Who of our squad are not going to make the first game through injury ? Kelman, Edward’s, Mbick, Sichenje. Anyone else ?

Still got a few friendlies and a cup games worth of injuries yet
  • Not saying he's the solution, but as a backup, could Redmond be used in the middle of the park? Technically very good, and can pick a pass out. Just probably lost the pace to be a winger now.

No chance. A Nathan Jones no 10
needs a hell of an engine and positional discipline

No I agree with that, I was thinking more of an 8 in the middle to sit between a Cov/Doc and Carey/Knibbs.

At Gillingham Redmond was effectively playing as a 10, drifting central while Asiimwe was high and wide on the right. If we do sign him I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get some minutes there

Let Doc do the running and Redmond can do the passing 😁

Or even better we actually sign a better Cm and winger and just let them do everything they need to

Grant will not be the main striker. I doubt Godden can manage much of a game. Without Kelman we are very light up front. If Dykes or another come in then Kanu may go, if not I doubt it.
