Just out of interest, would I be criticised on the other sites for pointing out the difference between 'imply' and 'infer'?
Yes. By me. I would also open a substack account and complain about it there, with more detail.

As always, we need serious upgrades in midfield. I got pelters for it two seasons ago, Greg Docherty is not a Championship level midfielder and sadly Coventry isn't either.

Knibbs and Carey as attacking mids are fine options and both offer something different, but games are won and lost in the centre most of the time, and we truly have two of the worst centre mids if not THE worst in the league.

They wouldn't even be able to dominate a midfield battle in League 1. We could and should do better.
Agreed. Not sure chalobah is the answer. We need at least one centre mid and maybe a coady back on loan. Who that person is, i have no idea! Easier said than done.

Two seasons ago it was fine, it isn’t now. That midfield helped us gain promotion. The fact it isn’t good enough for the Championship isn’t a surprise, NJ knew that last year and attempted to fix it with JRC. That obviously didn’t work and Coventry hasn’t improved at the rate everyone hoped. I think it’s pretty clear to everyone that the midfield is the issue.

Despite a lot of focus on two more players to come in I still believe we’ll do a lot of horse trading before the window closes, to trim/freshen/strengthen the squad.

Rich Cawley has made a bold prediction and says he doesn’t think we’ll get Holsgrove although he admits it’s not based on much to back his hunch.
Ironically this is the same guy that charges people for a subscription for his “exclusives.” Crazy stuff.

His substack is fantastic and a club our size is blessed that he kept a focus on us, as without it we’d be hearing very little from inside the club.
A club our size? We’re not just some two bob outfit mate. We’re a historically big club and always have been.
There’s actually been plenty of news, particularly within the last few years, that has broken regarding us and our transfers way before Cawley has got a hold of it, and these actual exclusives have been made by accounts not charging for it.

If you wanna continue paying your hard earned money on hypotheticals then fair play but I’m sorry to say it’s more fool you really.
You’re deffo on a wind up. Enjoy your night fella 👍🏼
Not at all Mart. I think you need to respect your club a bit more if I’m honest mate. Speaking as if we’re some two bob non league club or something and I can’t get my head around it personally. Maybe this is the reason why no one wants to sign for us, because many fans see ourselves as this tiny, minuscule club which is baffling because we really aren’t that at all. Hope you enjoy your night too though mate.
    Valleylocal reincarnated???????
If it's that easy to avoid a ban on here it makes me wonder why I've been perfectly behaved all these years

That’s fair enough. Each to their own indeed. I was speaking more on the topic of transfers as that was the subject at hand to begin with, and there are plenty of others out there that will break that sort of news way before Cawley and don’t charge for it.

Just rubs me up the wrong way when people start charging others for stuff. I understand it’s affordable and isn’t much but it’s just the principle for me.
Crazy logic! Like traditional media was free? You still had to BUY the newspapers, they were still a business.
Not if you were like me and stood in WH Smith reading them...😄

I just don't want to be sitting here on deadline day with us still needing a midfielder and ending up with Coady on loan. If we have to shift JRC on to be able to afford another top quality option then so be it.

Still feels like a lot of hopes being pinned on us being able to get enough out of Mwamba to make signing another CM on top of what's rumoured.

I think everyone agrees that the midfield is the problem and I'm sure that Nathan Jones knows that, I would also question if Amari Bell can occupy the left back slot with confidence, early days but he seems uncomfortable having a winger to tight mark, rather than sitting on the left of the back three.
  • The transfers mean we’re shoehorned into playing 4 at the back, we have no credible rwb nor a natural lwb.

Think Mesik and eventually Edward’s will battle for the left back spot.

Mesík and eventually Edwards should see to that

Bell is competing with Koumetio IMO
  • Could really do with moving on Tanto, Apter, JRC, Assimwe, Burke and Mannion.  Tie down Jones and TC.  Either tie down or shift Kanu and Ramsay.  But it's all a bit late on and most of them are not up to it, so we are stuck with them.
Our squad is huge but incredibly mediocre.

Agree on rwb but both Edwards and Mesik are comfortable in the lwb role.

I would hope the player we’re looking for on the right side is capable of playing rwb. Apter and TC definitely aren’t. And if we’re being honest Ramsay isn’t either except maybe against the very best when you’re trying to defend a lead.

In a 5 the midfield was excellent and defended in front of the back 3 but now with only two they need more help from the attacking 3 in front of them .. Knibbs done a lot  of work ..unfortunately the tackle he did not need to make led to the first goal but at least he was pressing and trying to win the ball , you won’t see many better free kicks then that all season … but Campbell did not track back which is why Ramsey had such a poor game and the knock on effect of CD having to help out …. Left us open.. Coventry and Doc were outnumbered in the middle of the park .. few times Doc had 2/3 players on him …. we need to be more attacking especially at home but got a feeling in trying to score more we will concede more.. suppose a 3412 could be the answer ???

Both Ramsey and Bell looked uncomfortable as full backs … having players directly running at them …..

Would be barely any other coverage bar the odd Pete O'Rourke transfer tweet. Not as if The Athletic are suddenly going to start covering us or something.
That’s just a load of bollocks mate. Plenty of accounts on X or practically anywhere on the internet cover transfer news for anyone, particularly now we’re a championship club again. Cawley isn’t the messiah he once was, there’s plenty more credible sources out there that don’t charge fans, you’re clearly just not looking deep enough.
What's your issue with Cawley using Substack?

He also has Louis Mendez doing bits with him.
It's a platform for journalists etc. Ex BBC journalist Adrian Goldberg uses it.

Do you now dislike Luke Young coz he has just started his one and charges a monthly subscription too? Currently doing a really interesting series on our downfall and relegation from the Prem all those years ago.

There are loads of podcasts that charge too, a whole system called Patreon where you subscribe to early releases and exclusive episodes and stuff.

Don't get the agg for Cawley when he does some good stuff. There has been little coverage for "little ol' Charlton" and he at least does stuff about us!

Can you point me in the direction of someone who does all the other stuff Cawley does for free?
If you actually read what you’d quoted you’d see that I said I was specifically talking about the transfer side of things, in which case there are plenty all over X.
How many of those accounts provide genuine stories and concrete rumours about the club...? - Can you provide examples seeing you're so adamant there are plenty of other accounts compared to Cawley out there - We're not talking about kids like you who make up transfer stories in your head, just for clarity sake
That very thing can be done without charging for a “substack”, it’s quite literally his job to report on Charlton/ other south London clubs. But as I’ve said a few times now I was speaking solely on transfer news, in which case many accounts on X break news before he gets a hold of it.
He doesn't actually. The South London Press went out of business so he lost his job.

I agree. This is the answer.

Jones is trying to make us more fluid and varied. To an extent he has succeeded. Although we were well beaten by Reading, I enjoyed that game (until all the changes) more than last season's dreary fare. The ball was largely on the ground and we effected some good passing moves.

But in making these changes he has f*cked up the only part of the team which worked really well last season: the back three. All three look a bit lost now. And although our attacks are quicker and more varied, we still cannot score goals.

I would revert to a back three and have two wing-backs who are mainly defensive, Edwards and Mesik are ideal on the left, but we have replaced neither Bree nor Harry Clarke on the right. I had hoped Asiimwe would develop to solve that problem, but it seems not. And although we have some great youngsters coming through, I do not think we have a future RWB in the offing.

Instead we are frittering away our budget on mediocrities who will not improve us like Alli and McNamara. We should focus our limited resources on buying two strong CMs.

We should have been building a settled side for the past three or four games. How can our first team build teamwork and understanding with constant changes? Steve Brown is right about this.
Jones has just admitted he will be treating our first competitive game as our last pre-season friendly. Let us hope that Cheltenham are not as good as Wimbledon or we could be out of a major cup competition before the season has hardly begun.
