I’ve told you once!ShootersHillGuru said:Is this the room for an argument. ?5 -
F*** it, you have convinced me. Ww need to sack Jones and bring you in.RonnieMoore said:In a 5 the midfield was excellent and defended in front of the back 3 but now with only two they need more help from the attacking 3 in front of them .. Knibbs done a lot of work ..unfortunately the tackle he did not need to make led to the first goal but at least he was pressing and trying to win the ball , you won’t see many better free kicks then that all season … but Campbell did not track back which is why Ramsey had such a poor game and the knock on effect of CD having to help out …. Left us open.. Coventry and Doc were outnumbered in the middle of the park .. few times Doc had 2/3 players on him …. we need to be more attacking especially at home but got a feeling in trying to score more we will concede more.. suppose a 3412 could be the answer ???0 -
All he needs is a thousand or so of us to do so and it becomes viable for a living.TheSE7 said:
So you think that Cawley’s only source of income is from “little old Charlton’s” fanbase subscribing to his substack for a few quid per month? Absolute nonsense.ProperCharlton said:
He doesn't have that job anymore because the South London press closed down. Maybe do some research?TheSE7 said:
Prior to the substack, Cawley had always released Charlton news for free. He never charged for it. He gets paid regardless because of his job and now gets more money because people choose to pay for it. This is fair enough as I say, but I just don’t agree. Doesn’t mean I should be called a troll for having that opinion. Ridiculous.SouthLincsAddick said:
Crazy logic! Like traditional media was free? You still had to BUY the newspapers, they were still a business.TheSE7 said:
That’s fair enough. Each to their own indeed. I was speaking more on the topic of transfers as that was the subject at hand to begin with, and there are plenty of others out there that will break that sort of news way before Cawley and don’t charge for it.SiFry said:Each to their own, but personally I enjoy Rich Cawley’s Substack and Podcasts with LM. Reckon it’s great value at just few quid a month!Just rubs me up the wrong way when people start charging others for stuff. I understand it’s affordable and isn’t much but it’s just the principle for me.So yes, it may well be.4 -

Hopefully not one of the many wet ones!MrBurns said:I think holding out for Holsgrove to sign is going to come back and bite us. The club aren't stupid and will be looking at other targets. I just hope we get that midfielder in this week to bed them in for the cup game.0 -

Mannion? Should be in between the sticks instead of Kalamity.Athletico Charlton said:Could really do with moving on Tanto, Apter, JRC, Assimwe, Burke and Mannion. Tie down Jones and TC. Either tie down or shift Kanu and Ramsay. But it's all a bit late on and most of them are not up to it, so we are stuck with them.
Our squad is huge but incredibly mediocre.
I don't rate either and Mannion is easier to shift. Like you, I would prefer to move on Kaminsky I just doubt it is realistic.
We need a much better number one then both of them.1 -
It’s a fiver a month 😂 cor dearTheSE7 said:
That’s just a load of bollocks mate. Plenty of accounts on X or practically anywhere on the internet cover transfer news for anyone, particularly now we’re a championship club again. Cawley isn’t the messiah he once was, there’s plenty more credible sources out there that don’t charge fans, you’re clearly just not looking deep enough.MarcusH26 said:
Would be barely any other coverage bar the odd Pete O'Rourke transfer tweet. Not as if The Athletic are suddenly going to start covering us or something.mart77 said:
His substack is fantastic and a club our size is blessed that he kept a focus on us, as without it we’d be hearing very little from inside the club.TheSE7 said:
Ironically this is the same guy that charges people for a subscription for his “exclusives.” Crazy stuff.mart77 said:Despite a lot of focus on two more players to come in I still believe we’ll do a lot of horse trading before the window closes, to trim/freshen/strengthen the squad.Rich Cawley has made a bold prediction and says he doesn’t think we’ll get Holsgrove although he admits it’s not based on much to back his hunch.5 -
No point changing formation now......NJ has spent all summer recruiting wingers and a right back and a left back. And we havent the budget to buy a couple of proper wingbacks, esp if we are going to bring in a decent midfielder.wolfgang said:
I agree. This is the answer.RonnieMoore said:suppose a 3412 could be the answer ???
Jones is trying to make us more fluid and varied. To an extent he has succeeded. Although we were well beaten by Reading, I enjoyed that game (until all the changes) more than last season's dreary fare. The ball was largely on the ground and we effected some good passing moves.
But in making these changes he has f*cked up the only part of the team which worked really well last season: the back three. All three look a bit lost now. And although our attacks are quicker and more varied, we still cannot score goals.
I would revert to a back three and have two wing-backs who are mainly defensive, Edwards and Mesik are ideal on the left, but we have replaced neither Bree nor Harry Clarke on the right. I had hoped Asiimwe would develop to solve that problem, but it seems not. And although we have some great youngsters coming through, I do not think we have a future RWB in the offing.
Instead we are frittering away our budget on mediocrities who will not improve us like Alli and McNamara. We should focus our limited resources on buying two strong CMs.
We should have been building a settled side for the past three or four games. How can our first team build teamwork and understanding with constant changes? Steve Brown is right about this.
Jones has just admitted he will be treating our first competitive game as our last pre-season friendly. Let us hope that Cheltenham are not as good as Wimbledon or we could be out of a major cup competition before the season has hardly begun.
Sorry......a flat back 4 is what we will be employing thus season.2 -

If you have a better use for a lady Godiva a month please let me know.TheSE7 said:
Pay it then big man! Everyone’s free to do as they wish, I can just find better uses for my money each month personally. I’ve stated many a time tonight that I was referring specifically to TRANSFER NEWS but everyone seems to be skipping that fact. Gotta be smart with money in this current climate. I’ll save my fiver from Cawleys substack, enjoy these transfer rumours hours before Cawley finds them elsewhere and then catch up on everything else a little later on 😉John_Fitzpatrick1 said:

If we're not looking deep enough what are the better (and presumably credible) sources please? Rich has built his reputation but clearly you feel there are things that usurp it. It'd be great to know and I hope you won't gatekeep the knowledge. Big man.TheSE7 said:

Do people think we’ll dip into the loan market? Daft if not. Three key loan players took Preston from being relegation candidates to comfortably mid table and occasional play off chasers last season. It also means that come the summer those players likely prefer a permanent move to their temporary home, meaning we could pick up a player who has significant resale value eg Alfie Devine.1
-
I think most of the loans will be in the last 10 days of the window. Prem sides have needed all their youngsters for Preseason to cover for the WC stars coming back late.WoolwichAddick said:Do people think we’ll dip into the loan market? Daft if not. I think we'd be daft not to look but I can also see the standard NJ line about " blocking our own wonderful academy " etc3 -
I think we’ll sign the two players Nathan’s talking about in the next week or two but I’ll be very surprised if we don’t pick up another 2 or 3 more before the end of the window if we can get rid of some deadwood as more players become available and pick up a loan or two . There’s always atleast one signing on deadline day for instance . Think we need those two players in asap though to get them settled in before Derby but to also put fans minds at ease.7

Anyone with a few years on the clock and a good memory will remember when the news broke on this very forum by a regular that a certain Kevin Cash who was secretly soley funding the Jimenez/Slater era , shit the bed and left the building when snake Jiminez tried to pull the wool over his eyes.
Said poster got absolute pelters for weeks before it turned out he was 100% correct and we slipped down a hole I certainly never want to try and climb back out of.
Just because someone claims something you don't want to hear doesn't mean it isn't true.13 -

Don’t most people get paid for their jobs?TheSE7 said:
That very thing can be done without charging for a “substack”, it’s quite literally his job to report on Charlton/ other south London clubs. But as I’ve said a few times now I was speaking solely on transfer news, in which case many accounts on X break news before he gets a hold of it.ForeverAddickted said:
How many of those accounts provide genuine stories and concrete rumours about the club...? - Can you provide examples seeing you're so adamant there are plenty of other accounts compared to Cawley out there - We're not talking about kids like you who make up transfer stories in your head, just for clarity sakeTheSE7 said:
If you actually read what you’d quoted you’d see that I said I was specifically talking about the transfer side of things, in which case there are plenty all over X.fenaddick said:
Can you point me in the direction of someone who does all the other stuff Cawley does for free?TheSE7 said:

It’s Sunday, that means a signing, right?
If not can we at least get a rumours? I’m sure we’re all bored of the Cawley discussion by now, as entertaining as it was for a while.

I have to agree with you Athletico, the whole Mannion/Kaminski thing is like two bald men fighting over a comb, I'm hoping and praying that Brooks is better than both of them.Athletico Charlton said:LargeAddick said:

I'm not going to comment on the seemingly never ending argument on here as I find it quite boring.
So back on topic, pre season friendlies rarely have any impact on how the season will play out.
But I must admit we look miles off what is needed imo.
The most worrying thing is the comments from Nathan Jones saying we only need another couple coming in.
Personally I think we need another 4 or 5 to come in.
We have a large squad as things stand but it is full of mediocre players.
Ideally I'd like to see 4 or 5 shipped out and 4 or 5 bought in, but the season starts in 6 days time so we'd better get a move on.13 -
We have till 31st of August to bring in or ship out players Blackpool. I agree, far too many mediocre players on the books.blackpool72 said:I'm not going to comment on the seemingly never ending argument on here as I find it quite boring.

Anyone else think our defensive signings were good but then we switched to a back four and they seem a bit weird?3

Our squad is huge but incredibly mediocre.
We really have made some strange, mediocre/inadequate signings under NJ as well as one or two decent ones for this level.
I do understand our budget restrictions etc last year - but even so.......?
We have also paid out some half decent wages/contracts for some of them which makes it harder to shift them on.
I can't help thinking that under a 4 across the back system, Apter might just start proving his worth to us on the right side? would keep him on.
Like many on here I reckon we desperately need one or hopefully two decent ball playing midfielders in to enable us to survive next year.
One of Doc or Cov should stay - probably Doc?
They key to this is being able to shift some on first due to the squad size.
It's not just about our owners stomping up the cash, its about having too many mediocre players that we can't shift out.
My bed is damp but not totally wet yet but I am getting the Tena night pads out just in case........
