Sonny Carey is worth money in this league and I think has a high ceiling to where he can go. I'd rather we didn't sell him but accept our place in the food chain
Challenge as always is replacing what you lose and with Carey its a lot. Midfield goals, decent set piece delivery and a fairly long throw as well as a really good fuel tank and desire to be involved7 -
This is kind of how the model works in The Championship, we may not like it but ultimately it's what Millwall have done well they've cashed in on players, scouted well, signed a good replacement, banked some cash and made a profit on the sale.Siv_in_Norfolk said:Word on the grapevine up here is that there have been a few offers for Carey and it's possible he'll leave this summer
Question is how much is enough for Carey to go for, maybe £5m? and who do we replace him with, is DKD the replacement if the link is true?1 -
I assume that DKD post is just a joke about us signing Coady rather than anything more1

Agree this will eventually be our model. Not sure it needs to be our model right now. I mean obviously every player has a price, but I'm not sure clubs would pay enough for Carey that we would be able to replace his contributions over the course of a season. He's also still quite young and English, which drives that cost up just a bit more. I would hope we hold on for now, and if he has another strong season (even if it doesn't include as many goals) look to cash in next summer. It's not just about selling, it's about selling at the right time (which, admittedly, is sometimes sooner than one might like).MartinCAFC said:

If say Norwich came calling for Carey with a chunky offer I don't think we'd be able to turn it down. Replacing him would be a bit tricky but we've got Knibbs who we haven't seen loads of.1

Carey took 92 shots this season, the most at the club by some distance (TC second with 63).So yes he scored a decent number of goals but our entire team was built around setting him up for strikes (sitting on the edge of the box at corners etc.).
He’s a good player and offers something no one else at the club does, but I’d be disappointed if he was our #1 shot taker next season too.
Outputs (goals scored) were high (top 9%) because the inputs (shots taken) were high (top 6%).

I think if Carey was to go we’d get a much better offer than what he would actually be worth. Output is always going to be valued more than what the player actually contributes for the rest of the game.Clubs will see the 8 goals and think if he can get that for a poor side he can manage 10-15 in a good side that’s worth a few pounds completely oblivious to how the whole system was set up to get Carey scoring from 2nd balls and box crashing0

I don't disagree, but we probably won't go up accepting that and it raises a couple of questions re' what would take us higher up the food chain?Carter said:Sonny Carey is worth money in this league and I think has a high ceiling to where he can go. - Major - with a captital M - investment from the owners?
- A change in management?
- A vegan kitchen at SL?
- All of the above?0 -
The sad truth is that with how little you're allowed to lose and our commercial performance we have to seriously consider offers for players like Carey. I'd love to see him stay but if the offer is a few million that is a tasy profit that can't be sniffed at1
