What was happening in the North Upper at around 75 mins? Everyone was standing up and looking over but I couldn’t see from where I was.0

Your comments on our midfield are (unfortunately) spot on. Coady makes a big difference so I hope he’s back for Sheffield Wednesday as his experience against a youth team should be a valuable asset.Blucher said:The pattern of home games is becoming tediously repetitive and highly worrying, having now clocked up 5 defeats in the last 6. We are overrun and out-passed in midfield, often concede a soft goal, throw forwards on from the bench towards the end and hurl the kitchen sink at the opposition, to no avail.
Three consecutive home defeats (the last two against very average and out of form opponents) have enabled Oxford and the other teams below us to close the gap and we are now very much at risk. The direction of travel is concerning and Ipswich and Hull will fancy their chances coming to The Valley later this month.
The net result is that there is big pressure on next Saturday’s game against Wednesday. A win at Hillsborough would certainly alleviate that pressure but, for a team now leaking goals and who have only scored more than one in 5 of our 42 league games thus far, that is far from a straightforward assignment.
We started the game well yesterday but couldn’t get the second goal and, once Preston scored with their first effort on goal, we were second best. They were able to run and pass through our midfield with ease, we looked vulnerable at the back and largely ineffective up front after that promising opening 20 minutes. The game finished, as it so often does now, with us pumping high ball after high ball into the opposition’s box, with Preston content to sit deep and look to spring us on the break.
Nathan doesn’t have too many options personnel wise and I don’t know whether Collins and Clarke will be fit to resume (although I thought that Fevrier did well in place of the latter). We might see Coady and Knibbs come back into midfield, as we looked far too porous in that area and Carey is hopelessly out of form.
We should still be ok but one thing’s for sure - we can’t rely solely on the ineptitude of the teams below us, most of whom (Leicester excepted) are showing signs of life. Towards the very end of 2019/20, Luton and Barnsley looked dead and buried with 4 or 5 games to go and look how that ended.
I suspect his professionalism and general know how is going to be absolutely vital to us getting a result at Sheff Wednesday.
If he cant play, his presence will be hugely missed.2 -
You can’t backtrack after saying 100% safe. You have to stick with it and if we go down, we all blame you, and your percentage thingy job gets passed on to someone else I’m afraid. Sorry.oohaahmortimer said:I’m definitely guilty of thinking we were safe but that’s now not the case , all season in spite of the results I look and think we are utter dreadful shit , with such limited ability going forward.
I’ve always been a believer that hard work can only get you so far , you need actual ability and every team in the league has more than us .
The ease which they cut through us and pass the ball about make them looks soooo much better than us .
Since the beginning of the season I could see us with a lot of luck going unbeaten for a few games but also going ages without winning a game cos we offer fuck all goal threat .
We have gotten ourselves in to a brilliant position with the crap squad assembled , saved by a decent ish January, it will be criminal to fuck up from where we have but where we are now not so surprising .
Our biggest goal threat now is our long throws cos we offer fuck all footballing wise .
Whether we stay up or not so much has to change cos we are a proper lame team and while our nearest and dearest are above us , I can’t ever accept this shit as good enough for our Charlton.
73% Safety and another crack of the whip earned by NJ
27% relegation and get rid of the manager and 75% of this shit house squad .12 -

I see things like 'much wider issues' quoted and it's been suggested before that this is down to racism. Now that may be the case with one or two individual morons but I certainly don't think it's a widespread issue. People just view his contributions differently and those people are allowed an opinion the same as anyone else. I don't agree with him being booed off the other week but certainly around me yesterday there were a number around me who clapped when he went off yesterday not because of his performance but because he was being subbed off. Not that I agreed, I thought overall he did well yesterday and was probably our best player although that wasn't a very high bar. He was also the only player who had his song sung loud and proud by most on more than one occasion so it's not as if he isn't generally liked/loved. He is however a very frustrating player. I think that is the underlying opinion of many, right or wrong, and that's fine. To suggest there are underlying issues of racism is to me wrong.Radostanradical said:

Assuming no one drops points the number to be mathematically safe is 56. Unless one of us does 80 on the A2 and declares that Charlton Athletic was driving the car I don't know where those points are gonna come from0

We are in a terrible downward spiral. Don’t know if we will get enough points to survive by the way we are playing there isn’t much hope. Some players seem to be giving there all why some have there flip flops on already. I think TC is a good league one player but no where near championship level and his attitude stinks. Was always one of my favourite players. Carey has lost the plot with his form and unfortunately I do think we will be one of the three to go down unless things change drastically. Yesterday for 15 mins we looked good after that total dross. Where are the points going to come from we will be hoping on other results.0

Ive tried to stay away from here to let the dust settle, being sucked into everyones misery and doom mongering.
You come out with yet again the same unawsered questions. Why has costello not been seen more, was quality first half, then disappears second and you see why he's not been overly trusted, simply not fit enough to play 60min. Fullah comes on is pretty much our only outlet (bar campbell) but makes numerous mistakes which cost us 1 goal but should have cost us several goals, again you can see why hes not really appeared much for all his talent he needs to be stronger on the ball. Campbell a threat and scares defenders without really creating anything then gets pushed to wb and hes completely wasted.
Jones didnt look fit atall and we have no other option than him with coady, colins and Burke out injured, although Burke did appear to make up numbers on the bench.
I still think we've prob already got enough to survive looking at everyone's final games but certainly a bit squeaky but time!!
A big summer ahead, midfield simply has to be rebuilt so we can carry a bit of attacking threat and stop just hoof and run football0 -
I'd probably look at the most recent transfer window, see the signings of Coady, Chambers, Sichenje, Dykes, Clarke and Fevrier and think that the recruitment team are clearly quite capable of identifying the right kind of player, but it comes down to what the budget is and how many players are needed. We had access to Coady, Chambers, Dykes and Clarke because their teams were willing to move them on in January for a reasonable amount which they would not have been in the summer. We miss out on targets sometimes, Galbraith would have been huge for us, but I wonder how many of our signings were Jones' absolute first choice in the position with the money he had to put across 10 signings. I'd be thinking about the budget far more than anything elseross1 said:Everyone is saying our owners should buy X amount of players for next season. How many of the players he bought start a game, how many are away on loan.

Absolutely thought we would get something from the last two home games if we go down, we deserve to1

Interesting to note that Blackburn play away to in-form Southampton on Tuesday and then host the leaders Coventry on Friday. In a rational world there's every chance they could lose both fixtures, in which case we will be going into the Sheffield Wednesday fixture, a point ahead, and with two games in hand, which should help to ease some nerves. Blackburn then face Sheffield Utd away, before hosting Leicester in the final game of the season. Having said that football isn't rational or predictable, so who knows how those fixtures will actually pan out in the real world. Anyhow it gives me a smidgen of hope.2

Occasionally he did have a slumped shoulder way of walking and ambled around the pitch and he did get alot of pelters too. But he had talent and the ability to do things others couldn't. In this side TC is literally the only one who can. We need him and I do think he is fully aware of the critique he is getting. How about we sing his song from minute one next week and see if the boy responds. Long live flair players with attitude!1 -
Need to stop looking at all the oher teams fixtures and concentrate on our own games…cup final next Saturday. Win that we stay up.3

Big difference between not identifying it and not identifying the right target. We'll never know of course but I think it's unlikely we didn't look for someone like thatct_addick said:

Under 'Enhanced Care' the earliest is 12 days but that's a 'minimum' guideline, which would take it to the day of the Sheffield game. It is possible for it to be 7 days under 'exceptional circumstances' but I think it very unlikely either Coady or the club would want to risk it anyway.........?se9addick said:

If NJ is going to play Sonny Carey next weekend I hope they work on his confidence over the course of the next fews days, I think it's at a low ebb (I know, stating the obvious!).
I've noticed in the last 3/4 games he's apt to take an extra touch before he unleashes a shot. I wish he'd just stick his foot through it and let his shooting boots do the talking. Just take it as it comes Sonny and let the keeper worry about it coming sizzling towards him!1 -
Ok, so potentially he could be ok. I would imagine that Jones would be keen to have him in the team if possible but hopefully it’s a medical decision. As much as I want Coady in the team in Saturday his wellbeing is the most important thing.WrightCharlie said:

I gave @Braziliance a hard time earlier in the season over the definition of a “must win” game, but I think Sheffield Wednesday is probably in that category. It looks like we will need another two to three points to stay up and by far our best chance of our remaining fixtures is when we play one of the worst teams to ever compete at this level. If we can’t win next weekend then where are those required points coming from?NorthStandMillz said:From our recent appalling form Sheff Wed becomes a must win in my eyes

As an aside, totally agree on the Spurs song.6 -
So on this occassion you are off the mark, the much wider issues I refer to our the way our team is set doesnt allow us to get the best out of Campbell. Much like it doesnt Kelman. That said I do appreciate everyone is allowed an opinion and I agree he can be frustrating, I also agree the majority of criticism isnt racist (and I have never actually seen any obtuse racism towards him online or in stadium). I do feel that it has become fashionable amongst an element of our fanbase for TC to be blamed for almost everything, whether any of that is driven by racist motivation, I couldnt possibly say as said earlier I havent seen any proof. The same element of our fanbase for whom Ryan Inniss could do no wrong - like a type of self proving bravado. What I will say though is on occassion some criticism does sometimes seems like its steretypes - i.e. not interested, arrogant, lazy etc.LargeAddick said:

Because NJ's type of creative midfielder would be one that was box to box, never stopped running, good in the tackle, and was able to be part of the back 7 as well as supporting the so called forwards.ct_addick said:

Therefore stick with 3 DM's and hope for the best.........0 -
Right now I would take ‘Park the Bus’ and not lose the last 4 games. It won’t be pretty but it may be enough to get us over the line.5

Could Solomon do a job in midfield?Raith_C_Chattonell said:I can't bear to read the thread this week.
I've felt like some wise old sage recently, shaking my head at the numerous posts in proclaiming our safety. I've watched Charlton for over 60 years and what may serve as a norm for the majority of teams doesn't apply to us. I've known (sorry to sound like a know all) but I have known with the certainty of Solomon that we could still f$ck it up. After all is said and done this is Charlton - and if we survive by the skin of our teeth - we must be truly grateful.4
