MATCH PREVIEW: Sheff Wed vs Charlton Athletic - Saturday 18th April 2026 - 3pm Kick-Off
Sheffield Wednesday vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 18th April 2026 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Thomas Parsons
Introduction
Charlton never exactly do things easy do they, there always has to be an inevitable roller coaster of a ride. A few weeks ago and our Championship status was looking a bit more settled, now though and once again the chasing pack have pulled us back into the fight that we all knew we'd be in when we won promotion from League One almost twelve months ago... We'll be in the fight right until the very end.
The Opposition
Name: Sheff Wed (24th) - Manager: Henrik Pedersen
Ground: Hillsborough
Previous League Result: Coventry 0-0 Sheff Wed
Up next is perhaps the most slippery of all potential banana skins, we make the trip to long relegated Sheffield Wednesday who have nothing to lose.
Of course the predicament that the Owls have found themselves in this season has been well documented, and their struggles don't appear to be ending come the end of this particular season either (what with another points deduction looming) - The task for Henrik Pedersen was always going to an impossible one, made worse in January with the departure of the likes of Barry Bannan
Its not surprising that Sheff Wed have won just a single game given their struggles this season, a 2-0 win at Fratton Park, but don't be fooled into thinking that this is a team of inexperienced Academy Graduates. The Owls have an experienced defence to call upon Liam Palmer and Max Lowe that have commendably stuck around throughout all the struggles, whilst how they kept Svante Ingelsson in January is a surprise and will be key in their Midfield.
Wednesday also come into this fixture unbeaten in their last two with draws against Leicester and Coventry, they'll be looking to go three unbeaten for just the second time this season, which coincided with their win at Fratton Park, whilst nine of their defeats have been by just a solitary goal… Banana skin indeed...
Charlton Team News
Nathan Jones spoke about his hatred of the International Break ahead of the Bristol City game, and that certainly seems to have distrusted our form, one defeat in four games beforehand whilst Charlton have picked up just the single point since returning to League action since - All eyes will naturally be on the team sheet, with Management taking any responsibility for results, but its equally time that individuals stepped up in the team, given the chances that have been wasted across each of the last four matches.
The question mark in the side is Conor Coady, who could still be absent given that we'll need to follow potential concussion protocols, whilst there was a rare start for Joe Rankin-Costello last time out. Given that we're away from home, it would be surprising if we didn't start Tyreece Campbell whose pace has been one of our singular creative outlets in the last two matches, whilst you'd expect Lyndon Dykes to line-up "alongside" the winger.
Mannion
Ramsay - Jones - Bell
Coventry - Docherty
Fevrier - Costello - Campbell
Dykes - Godden
Substitutes: Brooks - Clarke - Gillesphey - Chambers - Carey - Knibbs - Berry - Leaburn - Kelman

Unbeaten in our last 6 away games so Jones needs to tell the players of how they have got results away from the Valley and take that forward into Saturday’s game

Not looking forward to this one. We need a win. Am I confident? Not at all.1
-
I agree in leaving Carey out FA. too comfortable that he’s a starter every week. Not sure we’re going to abandon our 3-5-2 and drop Clarke and Chambers however5
-
Flipping obvious comfortable away win, it's the Charlton way, scrambled last minute winner 1-2.1

The Wendies haven’t won a home game all season. So tomorrow is inevitable.I watched them against Coventry last week and they played well . Lots of players with individual talent but I think the way we play will cause them big problems. My heart says 0-2 win - my head says 0-01
-
2-0 defeat
stake your mortgage on it, it's the Charlton way5 -
I recommend that you prepare yourself emotionally for Berry's upcoming start.22

Much as it pains me to say this but...this has to be a must win, anything else must be taken as a failure, and totally unacceptable...going for a 0-2 result myself with everything crossed...🤞0

Don’t lose. A point is better than nothing14

They can win tomorrow so long as we win on Saturday!Bedsaddick said:The Wendies haven’t won a home game all season. Such a tough one to call. We should win with limited problems, but I’ve been hurt too many times before to believe that’s possible.1 -
If we go into this match with that sort of mindset, we will lose, we need to get three points with a positive front footed performance, they are gonna be well up for it and will need to be outsmarted...shirty5 said:Don’t lose. A point is better than nothing1 -
They don’t need to be outsmarted, they need to be outlasted. Their squad is tiring and recently have held clean sheets until 75 mins or so and then they struggleeastterrace6168 said:

Also 4 teams below us need to better our results so a point closer to us staying up will go a long way in doing that3 -
2-1 they score first and everyone on here starts stabbing themselves in despair, only for Docherty to equalise and Kelman to come off the bench and score the winner8

Sheffield Wednesday’s last home win in a 3pm Saturday kick off was April 2024.

I just hope they come out really going for it...just like Arsenal last night...(NOT!)0

Need to be on the front foot. If I see a front two of Dykes and Leaburn I will be switching off.
Godden not yet started a game, now is the time for it, even if he only manages 60 minutes we need his energy from the start, not when we are chasing a game. Let's get 2-0 up and shut up shop. First 30 minutes are crucial, despite our woeful first 45 minute stats, we actually do create a lot of chances in the first 25 minutes. Need to make sure we are taking them this weekend.
Please Charlton. Just win a fecking game...so we can all relax for once.13 -
Gave this one a swerve, first the agg with the trains , then the ride to and from. Also not overly enamoured with Sheffield. If we don’t win well , we don’t deserve to be in this in this league.Looking for a proper performance, not waiting until we a 1 down with 10 to go before we start motivating ourselves. Draw won’t cut it, no excuses , play to win ( like their lives depend upon the outcome)
Please don’t have us go to Swansea needing a win and Pompey/Oxford / Rovers/ Foxes to drop points2 -

Heart says it will be 0-0 head says we will lose 1-0. Total respect to the 2,000 going up there.1

Let’s stop we need a win we don’t .. a point will get us to the magic 50 points and I think that’s what the score will be 1-1
Team — you don’t change systems at this late stage in the season you continue with what’s been successful and got us 99% safe … only changes need to be up top cause if we get a chance we need to put it away ..
Mannion ( could even be Kaminski if fit you need your best players )
Clarke
Ramsey
Jones
Bell
Chambers
Coady
Doc
Costello
Kelman
Godden
it’s harsh on Fav cause he was excellent last week7 -
Draw good enough .. Sheff Wed done pretty well at home and been very unlucky not to get a few winsusetobunkin said:Gave this one a swerve, first the agg with the trains , then the ride to and from. I think we'll see a similar side to last week, unless Clarke is fit again (which I doubt). There are serious question marks over TC, JRC, and Carey, so Nathan will be brave to swap it around too much.
Mannion
Ramsey Jones Bell
Fevrier Docherty Coventry Chambers
Fullah
Dykes Campbell
Subs - Brooks, Sichenje, Gillesphey, Leaburn, Godden, Carey, Knibbs (Kelman, Berry and JRC to miss out...)
I still think it's a little too soon for Godden to start, but him and Miles would be good subs if (when) we do go behind. Knibbs or Carey for Fullah after an hour.
My heart says we should win this, but being Charlton, I can see a 1-0 loss and the Massives celebrating almost reaching zero points for the season!
COYA!

0-2 with Oxford losing the early KO & we all wonder what the fuss was all about….. Maybe7
