Oh God, what a reminder der to wake up to! The beginning of the slide. And whilst I appreciate everything the guy on the right did for us, he tucked up enormously 20 years ago and beyond3

Dowie was the first of several terrible managerial appointments.
All the good work of the previous 15 or so years thrown away.15 -
Why would you post this?
Why?
WHY?!?22 -
Our worst manager ever2
-
And all so Murray could stick two fingers up to Jordan.
And so the downward spiral started.17 -
How can we best mark this momentous occasion?
I've just had a dump.

True, Parkinson rocked up later. My most disliked Charlton manager ever.charltonbob said:

And there's people who think he can take Wrexham to the PL.LargeAddick said:

I'm no fan of Parkinson but I wouldn't rate him as the worst manager. Thought he was just average.19

Let’s be honest : Karel Fraeye must be our worst manager ever. However, Dowie was the worst appointment. Murray got us into a position of strength then let his eyes get clouded by the red mist, the stupid fool.15

Karen Fraeye wins by miles.Watameire said:Our worst manager ever5 -
Fraeye will never be beaten in the list of appalling managers. At least you could argue that some of the other managers had a degree of credibility either before joining Charlton or after.2

It was always going to be tough to replace Curbs, he was integral in sustaining our success, and in hindsight, made Murray and Varney’s lives fairly straightforward given his class and ability
unfortunately after he handed his resignation in, there was no succession plan and Murray thought this gamble would pay off. It went catastrophically wrong for us, and exposed Dowie for a bit of a clown.
For what it’s worth, I think curbs leaving caught a lot of people off guard, and I think whoever else we may have gone for outside of Dowie would’ve struggled, but Dowie was one of the greatest clowns to embrace the managerial game. Literally lived off that one season where he almost kept Palace up5 -
The only very, very, very minor thing I can say in defence of Murray is that even now I do kind of struggle to see what the right appointment might have been. Obviously anything, including a broom with a face drawn on it, would have been better than Dowie, but I don't look and see an obvious shining candidate standing out even with the power of hindsight. Billy Davies felt sensible at the time but went on to be an insane person who failed everywhere else, Mick McCarthy was a name I heard mentioned but that was during a period where statistically the best thing a Championship team could do was hire McCarthy to get them promoted and then immediately sack him before he got anywhere near the Premier League. Martin O'Neill was technically around but Villa picked him up 3 months after we hired Dowie and I don't know if he was even available until August and we were never beating Villa to get him. I remember even at the time feeling like there weren't any obvious names that stood out as good candidates to replace Curbs, it wasn't ideal timing in that sense.1

why is that out of interest?LargeAddick said:

If Parker going was the start, this was foot down on the accelerator.

The first transfer window under Dowie spoke volumes as to how things would transpired, then indulging Pardew compounded it. Fraeye was no doubt the most unsuitable for any role remotely connected to football but the aforementioned clowns were prime architects in our demise given their so called reputation. Would throw in Appleton and Mullery too. But Dowie for those signings and Murray whining about paying for them was when the malaise really kicked in.5

As I have mentioned on previous occasions, at a Bromley meeting weeks after Curbishley had gone, Murray alluded to George Graham and Gullit being interested in the position.
I'm not saying we could have afforded the Dutchman but am sure Graham was affordable.
Murray gave us Dowie, he was the root cause of our relegation and subsequent slide.4 -
I always said Roy Hodgson at the time probably could have been lured back from working in Europe, he joined Fulham the next season I think so might even have been interested too.
