Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of centre-back Billy Koumetio from Dundee for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old has penned a four-year contract to become the Addicks’ second signing of the summer transfer window in as many days following the arrival of Slovakia international Ivan Mesík on Tuesday afternoon.

After completing his switch to south-east London, Koumetio said: “I’m very happy about the move here. The manager spoke to me about the vision that he has for the club and for the players as well. He spoke to me about how he wants me and the team to play, how I can adapt and how all those things will help me become a better person and a better player.

“When he spoke to me about the project he has for me, it was quite convincing. From that day when I spoke to him, I realised this was the best move I could make for my career.”

Manager Nathan Jones commented: “We’re delighted to add Billy. Again, Billy is one that we’ve monitored and chased for a while. We’re really pleased and he fits the bill in everything that we want here. He’s an excellent size, he’s super athletic and technically very good having obviously had a real good move to Liverpool.

“He then had to find home a little bit, so he did that at Dundee and then we felt that we were the next step in his progression. He can add real competition, strength and a different dynamic to our defensive unit, so we’re delighted to have him and I’m sure he’ll be a fixture for us.”

Managing Director James Rodwell added: “We’re delighted to bring Billy to Charlton. He’s a player we’ve monitored for a long time and fits what we’re aiming to add to the squad this summer. Our recruitment approach is deliberate and focused, identifying players who can contribute to the club’s direction both now and in the future.

"Billy is young, athletic and technically capable, and we believe he has the potential to develop with us as we continue to progress.”

Born in Lyon, France, Koumetio spent time at his hometown club Olympique Lyon and US Orléans as a youngster before joining Liverpool in November 2018.

The defender penned his first professional contract with the Reds in August 2020 and earned his senior debut four months later in Liverpool’s Champions League tie against Midtjylland.

After gaining valuable senior experience during loan spells with Austria Vienna, USL Dunkerque and Blackburn Rovers, he completed a permanent move to Dundee in the summer of 2024.

The France youth international has since made 43 appearances for the Dee, scoring once.a

Sounds promising. I notice he’s unlikely to contribute to our goals as much as Gillesphey did but he’s a good age with decent pedigree and experience. Welcome Billy

Liking the look of our latest 2 signings.
My only concern is that Jones hasn't signed a new  contract.
I really hope these players are to play with Jones and not replace him.

They are both primarily left footed so solving the issue of cover for Bell/replacing Chambers. Don't think it signifies anything in terms of Jones and his contract situation.

    It's definitely a concern.

Do we need Jones, Bell, Sichenje, Mesik, Koumetio, Ramsay and Burke for what is essentially three CB positions.

Although i guess the plan would be for at least two of them to also cover full back if required.

Hopefully he’s less likely to contribute to the oppositions goals

We play with a back 3, and need a back up for each:

    Ramsay / Sichenje RCB
    Jones / Burke CB
    Bell / Koumetio LCB

Edwards / Mesik LWB (presuming we stick with playing a more defensive option there, and go back to a Small style attacking RWB...

So think it looks just right personally. Need two options for the attacking RWB berth now.

Nathan Jones is adopting quite a Curbs/Pulis approach with these signings. Thinking of Steve Brown, Hermann, Higginbotham, Ryan Shotton etc... Players who are adaptable, can play both cb and full back, will put their bodies on the line and who will not be bullied. It is generally a good tactic to get results against supposedly 'stronger' opposition.

And when you consider injuries, it’s important that we now have Edwards, mesik and bell to play LWB and Ramsey who can play RWB. Burke is always injured so can’t rely on him. Dont see these signings as an indication that Lloyd is leaving, although I may be wrong

On paper looks a decent enough signing, looking forward to seeing him play before I pass judgement. If Bell stays fit we may not see much of Billy this season but I assume he's the long term replacement but competition/cover in the meantime.

Having had a bit of a deep dive into his stats, they're remarkably similar to Lloyd's in some elements. Now I am not at all saying that I expect Lloyd to go but in the few times that he was off the pitch and Coady hadn't signed, Gillesphey played in the centre of defence. I wouldn't be surprised to see Koumetio as the back up central defender as well as back up to Bell

He had a loan spell at Blackburn two years ago which didn't go well – I don't think he played a league game, seemingly because he wasn't anywhere near the required standard. But obviously that was two years ago, and Blackburn haven't exactly been a harmonious club recently, so I look forward to seeing what he can do for us.

I think last season and having to cobble together a makeshift defence out of anyone left fit enough has prompted a watchword of "versatility" in our scouting team, at least in terms of defence. Ramsay, Koumetio, Mesik, Bell all have the ability to fill in different roles in the defence if needed, even Sichenje can be the central CB or a RCB if it absolutely came to that.
I'm sure all of them will have positions earmarked as preferred and there will be an "ideal" defence but if we do have injuries and suspension to deal with hopefully we've got a better hand to play next season.

Long term he could be the Lloyd replacement. Makes sense to look ahead there as his contract will be up in a years time

Hopefully we can keep Jones, but if not a year of Koumetio settling in would be good for him being ready to take over if needed

    Excited by this signing.

Seems like he could be one of those that has a high ceiling and we have done well with players recently with previous big club academy experience.

The only real concern is the injuries and how we don't seem to have much luck with them.

Liking our business so far, just need a couple more midfielders, a right sided versatile defender, a forward and I would say that's us good to go to be honest, providing no one else leaves.

Welcome Billy Kidman, hope you're a shooting star and press well for us.

    @Braziliance

Agree with most points, but surprised that you don't fancy a first (or second) choice RWB?

Ramsay isn't quite productive enough for me in that role. He could compete with Harry Clarke and Peter Kay for a masterclass in finishing, mind!

Seems like a good signing as does Ivan. One cautionary word. Some of the scouting last summer was let’s say, less than the required standard. Not to say these two won’t be brilliant additions but I thought the same about Apter and Olaofe. Less said about Ahadme the better.
