I feel like we are approaching a ‘we couldn’t get things over the line comment’. I really hope not, we were worked out very quickly with regards to our midfield last season and it’s not changed.TheHerminator said:

This is also my concern. Karlan aside, we don't appear to have improved our quality going forwards or in the middle of the pitch. But you cannot blame players not wanting o join on the ownership.People are criticising for the lack of investment with a month to go. If players don’t want to come and the money is available, that’s a whole different problem that isn’t to do with the ambition of the ownership0 -
Yes possibly. Nothing to do with a lack of investment though. A potently sad bi product of the situation we’ve been in for so longSword65pf said:

Jerome Thomas when he wanted to play was fantastic, but another wide player who was frustrating.

He was actually born and raised in Ireland, though, unlike Connor Coventry, Josh Cullen, Harry Arter and tha other Irish players of that ilk. Moved to England when he was 14.golfaddick said:

I'm still holding out hope we might break our transfer record for the right CM. Surely the budget is there to drop £5m on the right player?DamoNorthStand said:
As I was expecting an uptick in quality and investment and taking into account we have spent little relatively in this window - I would want to spend more than Apter money on our CMs as they are so important.fenaddick said:
Out of interest would this change if we spent a Kelman/Apter type fee on a midfielder? Because Alli is essentially Knibbs when it comes to fees and there was a lot of positivity thereDamoNorthStand said:Dunno why but I’m not feeling this transfer. likewise if Alli is Knibbs money, I’m not sure that is enough. Also Knibbs had 15 odd goals the season before which is still something I think we can hold on to. I am not seeing the goal contributions from Alli0 -
Absolutely, but I find it to believe we haven’t found players outside of our country that are more affordable, hence my hunch we will not know the players when we do sign them, or at least that what I’m hanging onto at the moment, I’m assuming we are being priced out of anyone with experience in England, even if we are trying to prise players away.TheHerminator said:

I'm watching Malmo v Elfsborg atm, the Scandinavian market should be very affordable. Transfer fees and salaries are considerably less than what is paid in England.

Quite possibly mate. It’s tough for us as relative small fry in the championship. Like I say I’ll judge/be disappointed once the window closesSword65pf said:

I recall that Cliff Jones was very consistent ... it was a while back though and he was probably helped by 2,3,5.Covered End said:

So reviews of him will be very similar - capable but inconsistent. Let’s hope for more of the former than the latter.
Has there ever been more than a handful of wingers in the history of the game that are consistently good every single game?
The only Charlton player that was consistently good and played wideish was Graham Stuart and he wasn't a winger.

Interestingly, and you can relate it to our currently situation, he was always forcibly asserted that the thing that turned the 1961 team from a good team to a great team and made it tick was the addition of Dave Mackay.
So, all we need to find is a 2026 version of Dave Mackay.

Well one positive is that we have a player in our ranks that started in a line up that actually won at the toolbox last year.0
-
Good luck to the lad. It feels like a bit of a punt, but pretty well all signings are, particularly given our budgetary constraints. It’s a signing that gives us a bit of a safety net if we’re unable to persuade TC to extend his contract, although hopefully he will. The same applies to Jones and Ramsay - we can’t afford to lose our best players.
4 years feels like a lengthy contract for a player with limited experience at this level, although Chappell clearly believes in him. The reported fee also looks a little on the high side, although transfer fees have gone through the roof and are absolutely nuts these days at Championship level. If Alli succeeds, it will be a snip.We now have 3 players who like to attack down the left side, although I imagine that Alli (and TC) can also operate down the right.
I assume this deal signals the end of our reported interest in Kamara (if it ever existed) and attention will now surely focus on the midfield engine room.3 -
Another meh signing2

I'm a bit concerned about that too. Defenders are probably happy to join, as they know they'll be part of a solid and well drilled defence, but midfielders and attackers will have seen our functional football last season, and be a bit put off from joining us. It kept us up, but we probably played the ugliest football out of any club in the Championship last season, and players will have seen that.AndyG said:

I'm sure NJ has been desperately trying to bring in quality in midfield, but is struggling to land his targets.2 -
From Portsmouth season-ticket holder mate.“You’ll get a few good games out of him but he doesn't come back and help out defensively”
”We did play him quite a bit last season for 90+ minutes because we had no one else. Good squad player I would say. I dont think he's going to blow you away but good for squad depth”.1 -
I would’ve preferred us signing someone younger with a bit more upside, especially on that contract. It was clear we desperately needed a TC equivalent / alternative in the squad. He’s a wild card, hopefully he can be the player we saw at The Valley last year more often than not.Another example, as if it was needed, to show everyone the prices of today’s market. This is what £1.5m gets you. Millwall are about to sign Kyrell Lisbie, a 22 year old with 44 appearances and 11 goals in League 1. The cost will be £3 million, potentially rising to six. He was playing non-league two years ago.2
-
He was loaned to a league above his team, he's just broken into the the full Ireland team. Let's see, I'm at least optimistic before he's even put the shirt on.8
-
Alli isn't a player I'm familiar with, but after watching the highlights video, I'm fully expecting him to score on his debut, do a back-flip and probably break an ankle and spend the next 6 months in the treatment room.
Last season we (just about) managed to stay up with a L1 budget. This season we seem to be trying the same trick. Unless we shell out on a very decent creative central mid, it's gonna be a repeat of last season, but I fear the ending won't be so kind to us this time around. Mbappe would stuggle to hit double figures in a season if he was relying on the likes of Doc, Cov & Carey to supply him.1 -
Sure it's been done... But on holiday and not reading 5 pages but Alli, Alli, Alli, oi, oi, oi!0
