Who should be captain?

In my opinion Lloyd Jones isn’t a captain in the true sense of the word. I want my captain cajoling players, bawling at players when necessary, a quiet word in their ear and encouraging when needed. After he gave away the pen Ouma needed someone saying, keep your head, forget it, keep going. But nothing. The same with young players like Mwamba and Mbick.

However, we don’t have such a player in the camp so Lloydy is probably the best option but I’m not happy about it.

Think I broadly tend to agree, as great a player as he is.

Thats what Doc offered up - an average player yes, but a very good leader and captain. We are definitely lacking this and not sure where it can come from.

Jones deserves to be captain, in his absence (heaven forbid) I’d give it to Coventry

Jones. It’s not even up for debate imo. He was vice captain, the captains gone so he takes it.

Lloyd is the only realistic option and he does deserve it however I expressed my concerns in the match thread he’s not a vocal captain at all and he has even said it himself that he just likes to lead through performance on the pitch and I don’t necessarily agree with that approach. I also think he’s way too quick to lose his temper. Stoke fans were terrible but you simply can’t behave that way as a captain and that energy affects your teammates. I love the guy he’s an amazing player but those are attributes he needs to work on if he’s gonna remain captain and I do want him to be.

Whoever is the biggest leader in the dressing room and on the pitch. Docherty was fantastic at that, Jones himself has said he's not much of a talker in that way but leads by actions instead.

If there's someone better in the playing squad at being a motivator and a leader, then them, but until then, it'll be Jones

Doubting Lloyd Jones as captain is is bonkers.

It’s just as bonkers as recalling Gassan Ahadme and giving him the captaincy.

Btw my answer to the question is undoubtedly Lloyd Jones. We don’t have a better candidate - so the right man is captain.

Thats not to say I think he is perfectly suited to be captain but I don’t think we currently have anyone better.

For example I think Doc was a brilliant captain but I certainly wouldn’t be swapping him with LJ in the squad any time soon.

I don’t think it’s a crazy question but I agree with Damo that he’s the only option. It’s a bit like the England cricket team, there’s only one option

I see some haven't read my OP properly. I’m not advocating replacing him as captain, I agree he’s the best option currently available BUT, in my opinion, he isn’t captain material.

When neither Doc or Jones were available it was Godden. Obviously that’s bit of a non starter now. Bell?

Jones isn't the captain that Doc was, that us clear.

But I don't see anyone stepping up to the plate. So, Jones it is.

Some of you have garnered a really abstract view of the game

Lloyd Jones is 100% the right captain and by a long way as well. This obviously is my personal opinion amd experience. People who talk loads tend to do less, I entirely judge and respect people by their actions. Ouma is a professional footballer apparently and being dug out or babysat by another player I doubt would have made a teardrop of difference to him. Seeing Lloyd Jones launch himself through someone equally as big as him would personally inspire me more than him clapping his hands and cojoling or whatever the fuck that means. Greg Doherty is a good man, a boy scout of a footballer and one who leads by a mixture of effort and encouragement. He isn't a leader in the same way Lloyd Jones is

    Ouma

Kinsella and Bryan Robson don’t exist anymore
  • I love Lloyd Jones and he has basically been our captain since pre season and good parts of last. Our squad tbf isn't the oldest and we don't really have anyone else that fits the mold like a coady perhaps?
If one of ouma or skipp are decisively shite by Jan maybe we terminate the loan and bring in Jordan Henderson for six months eh?

The cajoling role doesn't have to go to the captain. Coady did a lot of it last season.

There is no good reason to change captain but if I were Nathan, I would give Lloydy some clear direction on what more he would like to see from him and perhaps get him a former team captain mentor to help bring the very best out of him. No matter what age we all have the capacity to learn and develop further and I don’t think Lloyd would be at all offended by the suggestion as he is an incredible professional who gives his absolute all for team and club.

Most of Charlton fans, doubt there is a player in the squad that embodies everything a captain is.
  • Only alternative to Jones that I can see is Josh Edwards, if, hopefully when he becomes a first team regular again.
Determined, sets the right example and has the Scottish accent

The big difference between Jones and Docherty as captains is that Jones is actually on the pitch.
