The big difference between Jones and Docherty as captains is that Jones is actually on the pitch.
Being a captain is about more than 90 minutes in a week though. We're all guessing about the rest of it

Huh? Docherty was on the pitch as captain for us for at least 80 games.

The point being, he doesn't play for us anymore!

I do agree however there’s a bigger question around leadership (or lack thereof) in this squad. It’s been an issue for a long time, probably pre-Nathan Jones.

When Coady came in January the main thing he really brought was leadership and experience and it made a huge difference. Now he’s gone and so has Docherty. When you look at the 2026/27 Charlton team, who are the real leaders? Yesterday, when Ouma was disintegrating, who was there to take him under their wing? When the whole team was falling apart who was the calm head organising and bringing focus?

I'm not sure that is completely fair honestly. Against West Ham they got a goal back but the team saw it through to get three points. Against West Brom we went behind but came back to score an equaliser. Against Preston we started poorly but turned it up a gear and looked much the better side when we did. All of which we did without Coady or Docherty.

Yesterday was shit and I don’t deny everyone fell completely to bits, the players and management alike. BUT it was the exception not the rule and using that one result and suggesting there's no spine or leadership is a bit reductive.

spot on there - people are guessing at all of it - i've never witnessed anything greg docherty did on or off the pitch with regards to encouraging players etc and i doubt many others on her have either - not doubting it or the praise that those such as NJ have given greg doch but how on earth can we judge what LJ does in that sense ? he runs through brick walls for the team and i have no doubt he's good at encouraging his team mates - why assume otherwise?

It’s where Chalobah is again a miss
  • If it’s based on talking to, and encouraging other players, I would say that Chalobah would be in with a good shout

There are different types of leaders, Jones is a lead by example type which is fine. I never really get how people have opinions on who should be captain, none of us know what Jones or any of the players are like in the dressing room or at the training ground so how can we judge how good a captain he is just on the 90 minutes on the pitch which is maybe 10% of the job?

I think the original post has some merit. As good a player as Lloyd Jones is, and while he certainly leads by example, I'm not sure leadership comes naturally to him.

That said, I think it would do more harm than good to take the captaincy away from him now. If he can stay fit consistently, someone like Nathaniel Chalobah would be an awesome captain in my opinion.

  • Okonkwo....... he can't go down 'injured' any more but he can take a leaf out of the Stoke keepers playbook to chase down the pitch to the ref....... giving NJ time to do a bit of touchline coaching and re-org.....

Jones is very much the captain in the mode of Terry Butcher. It does not have to be the captain doing the on field guiding of other players. That was the role of the experienced Coady second half of the season. The problem is not having that player in the side. Maybe the experienced Skipp can do it!

In that case why should we have opinions on anything like team selections, tactics etc?

Wish we had some other leaders in the squad. Amari Bell?

I don’t think it’s a crazy question but I agree with Damo that he’s the only option. It’s a bit like the England cricket team, there’s only one option
This is still my view. No one else stands out as a better choice but I don’t think Lloyd is captain material either

When we went on a losing streak last season everyone said Docherty wasn’t captain material and should go to jones. Jones now has it we’re on a losing streak suddenly he’s not captain material and we’re missing a leader like Docherty.

    Anyone else see the irony

Not really, all depends on who's saying it and when. I've maintained for a while that Jones isn't true captain material in my eyes, and has been chosen more for being a good player than someone who leads a team

I'm not sure that its really about who is captain I think its a leadership across the group issue. We have experienced players like Grant and Bell but I'm not sure they are really leaders. Chalobah did look like a leader but obviously we miss him in so many different ways.

100% this. Lloyd Jones being the captain is not the problem. The problem is losing Docherty and Coady and now lacking leaders in the squad.

I agree Chalobah looked like he was filling that. McNamara is the other one that we may need to step up. We’ve not announced who the vice captain is but I assume it’s Coventry given he captained a lot of preseason.

Trying to turn around poor runs of form are the times when you need those leaders the most. Which I think is why Jones signed Coady and brought Docherty back into the fold last January. I don’t think either are a huge miss football-wise but in terms of leadership I don’t think we replaced them

Was going to say it's a shame he wasn't still around, I honestly believe he was the difference between getting relegated & staying up with his organisation, constantly talking & geeing players up & getting in the ref's ear.

I think Chalobah was meant to be the experienced pro for the summer window.
We all know how that's turned out so far.

I always find the captain assessments a bit silly. We don't know what goes on in the dressing room. There's a perception that captains have to be running round on the pitch yelling at everyone and beating their chests all game but that's not the only way to lead. Docherty wasn't the best player but he led by example in terms of his effort, though his performances were generally not brilliant. Jones has hit a bit of middling form but I don't think anyone would say his effort is lacking. He's played through numerous injuries for us, puts his body on the line every game and was the first to sign up to a new contract this season which was a show of faith in the club. As for what goes on in the dressing room we just don't know, but given Nathan Jones has a history of bringing in personnel purely for their influence on the other players there is no way he'd be giving the armband to Jones if he wasn't happy with his work off the pitch as well

I agree about the captain point. The leadership question for me is a wider one about have we got enough leaders in the dressing room and on the pitch. Chalobah and Godden returning should definitely help but it does seem like we may have been lacking in that area in our recent run
