    Huh? Docherty was on the pitch as captain for us for at least 80 games.

    The point being, he doesn't play for us anymore!

    I do agree however there’s a bigger question around leadership (or lack thereof) in this squad. It’s been an issue for a long time, probably pre-Nathan Jones.

    When Coady came in January the main thing he really brought was leadership and experience and it made a huge difference. Now he’s gone and so has Docherty. When you look at the 2026/27 Charlton team, who are the real leaders? Yesterday, when Ouma was disintegrating, who was there to take him under their wing? When the whole team was falling apart who was the calm head organising and bringing focus?

    I'm not sure that is completely fair honestly. Against West Ham they got a goal back but the team saw it through to get three points. Against West Brom we went behind but came back to score an equaliser. Against Preston we started poorly but turned it up a gear and looked much the better side when we did. All of which we did without Coady or Docherty.

    Yesterday was shit and I don’t deny everyone fell completely to bits, the players and management alike. BUT it was the exception not the rule and using that one result and suggesting there's no spine or leadership is a bit reductive.

    spot on there - people are guessing at all of it - i've never witnessed anything greg docherty did on or off the pitch with regards to encouraging players etc and i doubt many others on her have either - not doubting it or the praise that those such as NJ have given greg doch but how on earth can we judge what LJ does in that sense ? he runs through brick walls for the team and i have no doubt he's good at encouraging his team mates - why assume otherwise?

    If it’s based on talking to, and encouraging other players, I would say that Chalobah would be in with a good shout

    There are different types of leaders, Jones is a lead by example type which is fine. I never really get how people have opinions on who should be captain, none of us know what Jones or any of the players are like in the dressing room or at the training ground so how can we judge how good a captain he is just on the 90 minutes on the pitch which is maybe 10% of the job?

    I think the original post has some merit. As good a player as Lloyd Jones is, and while he certainly leads by example, I'm not sure leadership comes naturally to him.

    That said, I think it would do more harm than good to take the captaincy away from him now. If he can stay fit consistently, someone like Nathaniel Chalobah would be an awesome captain in my opinion.

    Okonkwo....... he can't go down 'injured' any more but he can take a leaf out of the Stoke keepers playbook to chase down the pitch to the ref....... giving NJ time to do a bit of touchline coaching and re-org.....

    Jones is very much the captain in the mode of Terry Butcher. It does not have to be the captain doing the on field guiding of other players. That was the role of the experienced Coady second half of the season. The problem is not having that player in the side. Maybe the experienced Skipp can do it!

    In that case why should we have opinions on anything like team selections, tactics etc?
