Getting really fed up with watching teams target Leaburn, week after week.  They can't cope with him and just resort to constant fouls everytime he gets the ball yet he gets absolutely zero protection from the referees.
Stoke was the absolute nadir of that, especially when Madley then booked Leaburn first.  It's a disgrace really.
Leaburn was superb today, hopefully he can get himself into a goal scoring groove, if he could get 12-15 this season we would have a very very valuable player on our hands.
Campbell was excellent too, swung a great ball for Alli to score (but he didn't), and put lots of other decent balls in. He isn't perfect but if he was he wouldn't have with us.
Thought Skipp and Coventry looked excellent together.  We badly miss a good number 10, Grant, JRC, Knibbs, Carey; none are good enough sadly.  Hopefully we find a way to fix that in January.
We have had an excellent start to the season.
I think Grant is a different level to JRC, Knibbs and Carey. He’s not a number 10 though, which isn’t entirely his fault.
Unfortunately for us he is still the best 10 we have.

We are lacking a proper 10 and a 7. Grant and Alli are filling the gaps kind of, but we will he shown up as the season goes on. Without Champ level people in those positions we only have about half an attack. Even with Godden and/or Kelman back chances will be few. The plan was to prioritise defence, fair enough, but it will be a bit of a slog, again. Poor old TC is feeling the brunt already.

Yesterday left us all a bit frustrated, as it was a game we could and should have won.

So I thought the following stats might put things in context.

After 7 games last season we had 8 points, this season we have 12.

However, if you look at the actual results against the same teams last season (with West Ham replacing Coventry) we only got 2 points from those 7 fixtures.

I know football's not that simple and its a long season, but it's got to be a good sign that we've got a better result in 4 of our 7 games, and the same result in the other 3.

And that's while having a lot of players unavailable.

I think we had 11 points from our first 7 games last season, so that is 1 point more this season.

    @twizzle
    Oops, misread my spreadsheet. Thanks.

I actually think we need a decent 10 more than we need someone to play on the right, still a long way until January but right now that would be my priority for the next window.

If Bournemouth can get promotion from Championship and survive in Premier League with a capacity of 12,357, why should we worry if we cannot get 20,000+ every home game
Not sure if someone has replied to this yet as I am catching up on the thread, but I don't believe Bournemouth could do what they did then, now and fortunately for them, they did it at the right time when Prem money started getting ridiculous. So they can always bounce back right away, like they did once already.

With the new system they would get slaughtered with the new revenue system and would honestly be no different to clubs like Lincoln if they were the club they were before they started overspending to get promoted.

Bournemouth and Brentford hit the absolute jackpot.

So basically definitely scrap any idea of VAR, they truly fucked  that up in the manc derby, pro ref has just admitted, it’s really crazy how they have time to get it right and still cock it up

It would be a great question for Kieran Maguire on the Price of Football podcast, but  I think you are probably right. In which case that is pretty shocking. I'm a member of their Club so I'll ask him if he agrees.

Here’s Luke Young on the penalty.

the Centre half just cleans Miles out, no where near the ball

TBF the centre half is looking at the ball and Miles gets in his way rather than him looking at Miles and deliberately shoving him. Still a foul but can see why thats not given

I have come to terms with the push on Leaburn not beig punished with a penalty. Some refs think they have amazing powers to determine how hard a push is. Also they put a higher levy on fouls in the box. I personally don't think the ref has magic powers and the defender shouldn't have commited an undisguised push but I don't possess the magic powers the ref thinks he has. So hey ho.

What £39.50 a ticket gets you. 18,836 for a Saturday game against Pompey, with a full away, is terrible, especially considering the start we have made.
There isn’t the interest , I think if you make it £20 the numbers wouldn’t be much greater, make it free and people still wouldn’t bother .
The football to a neutral is dull , we love it cos we’re Charlton nutbags who will watch any old shit in a Charlton shirt.
Disagree with that. There are plenty on here that have said that the pricing is influencing their decision whether to go to games or not and this site is only a small sample of the Charlton fanbase.
You also have to consider the occasional or floating supporters and potential future supporters. The pricing isn't going to encourage those people to attend. If we aren't encouraging future supporters then the attendances will only continue to dwindle.
Mrs TT and me would like to go to watch Exeter Chiefs some time, but im not that fussed, and certainly have no intention of paying £100 for us to see if we like it.

We were getting better attendances last season for poorer results, so hands down its the walk up cost thats putting people off. Only Charlton can know if the higher cost ticket with lower attendance brings in more revenue than a lower ticket price with higher attendance.

Im sure that a higher attendance is much better for the club in the long term, as well as better for the players.

I have not yet found a clip of the Miles penalty shout anywhere, which is absurd. Anyone found anything on social?
The 15 min highlight package that Sky show of all the Championship games.
And how and where do I get to see that? Huh? Link?

The Stoke highlights package included not just the penalty incident itself (which of course it had to) but also extra footage from behind the goal. It's been widely said that yesterday was a clearer pen than the Stoke one; "very soft" was the common pro viewpoint on that.
It is shown on Charlton TV  highlights.

    Odd tone to use!
Just FYI, you won't find me involved in any anti- Golfie football pile-ons. We have a professional relationship, which I value. And btw in that relationship he bears no resemblance to his football persona here.

Nevertheless I used a sharp tone there because his remark is exactly an example of what is bugging me. It implies that if I just fall into line and subscribe to Sky, I will get what I am asking for. But even if I bowed down and paid my dues to  the Sky money machine I still would not get the coverage we all should expect,  the old Charlton TV package which was tailored to our interests as committed Charlton fans.

Anyway I see ,thanks to @Dansk_Red post above, that Sky have now kindly permitted the Club to replace the 2 minute package they had up last night with a 10 minute one which shows the incident.

And I'm looking at a clear penalty, whereas some dork in the EFL's Osterley "superstudio" in his dubbed -after-the-event commentary, doesn't think so. But does not then go on to ask why the ref didn't book Miles for simulation.

"Allo, allo, fucking useless, fucking useless".

I am sorry but you are absolutely mental if you think that is a clear penalty. He is never in a million years getting that, and you'd be livid if it went against us.
I'm mental too then 🤪 wibble wibble

We’re sixth so why am I going to moan. If someone told me we’d be in that position after seven games I’d have laughed. One loss. Surely it’s fantastic. Sorry I’m not convinced yet again. We’ve just had a transfer window and arguably for me the two most important areas to sign quality we didn’t. This team is crying out for a midfield playmaker yet we signed two more defensive midfielders and Ouma who is going to take time to settle. We are experiencing exactly the same problems we all wanted addressing from last season. Midfield, certainly without Chalobah is static and without creativity. My second big gripe is we still don’t have a striker who scores goals. Kelman is the only potential player who might fulfil that role. Just like last season we are unable to score. We concede possession in every game. Another thing that needed attention from last season. Sixth and two points off joint top. It’s obvious the potential is there but we’re shy of realising it because of the same issues we needed to address from last season.
But the creative midfielder he wanted was clearly Holsgrove, who he tried for all summer. It wasn’t for a lack of trying. Seems to have gone for Skipp instead as second choice
If we are to believe the rumours then Holsgrove early on pretty much rejected our approach and wasn’t interested in joining us. If that’s the case we continued our courtship and seemingly didn’t have a plan B because I believe that Skipp was a late addition that became available and we grabbed it. Not saying we shouldn’t have but to suggest Holsgrove and Skipp are the same type of players is just not right. We’ve yet again left ourselves with a static midfield lacking in creativity and it’ll cost us again. Teams dominate midfield when playing us and our only tactic is to break up their play and hope we can break away. It’s basically asking to be put under pressure.

  • Wasn’t Ouma who we went for after Holsgrove ?

If he wasn't aware that Miles was there, why did he raise both hands to push him out of his way?

It’s a penalty for me, anywhere else on the field it’s a free kick, also if it was Miles who done the pushing, the ref would’ve given them a free kick.

The lower attendances are a combination of several things.Travelling and parking is a major factor, look at the cost of fuel now, look at the parking restrictions, travelling to and from games can be a nightmare,e.g. A2 diversions last wednesday, caused chaos.then get to the game and be asked nearly£8.00 for a pint of lager,£2.50 for a twix,£3.75 for a fancy cupcake, everything is going up,Water bills,gas/electricity,it is coming to the stage where luxuries like watching football and generally enjoying lifes little luxuries go out of the window.I dont follow other clubs gate figure, but I would imagine we are not alone.
Another factor is of course price of tickets,if you had made the qpr game your first visit of the season,paid£38.00 for a ticket, would you have rushed out and bought a ticket for the Portsmouth game.
I think we have a good bunch of honest players who deserve to play in front of larger crowds,I am glad to see the Covered end full most weeks, and just hope the long break until our next game reignites the enthusiasm of those that dont feel they can attend at the moment.

This is how I see it also.

Charlton Vs Pompey is hardly a game that a non supporter would want to go to.

Although I do think the price doesn’t help, if you were looking at wanting to go to just any football match you’d be far more likely to go non league which is cheaper
During 80s/early90s, if Charlton weren't playing, I'd find another London league game to to go. These days, I wouldn't think of going to see another league club because it's just especially good value for money. I see a game every Saturday but if I'm not at The Valley (my regular away days are over), it's non-league for me every time for me now.
  • Anyone fancy Elliott Lee for the 10 role?
    Free agent, still only 31.
I know he blew hot and cold last time around, but he's now more experienced and would be slotting into a better side.
We've struck gold with Arthur and Cody wasn't too bad either!

Firstly, we can't sign anyone because we're at the squad limit so it's a non starter. Secondly, he's just come off a distinctly average loan spell in League One after being distinctly average in League One the previous season
