It didn't matter especially but maybe a sign of desperation...but where was Alli meant to be playing? It looked like he went into CM as a straight swap for Coventry to me.

    If so....weird and mental.
    He didn’t play.

    That was Mwamba.
    Ah! It did seem odd.

Should have buggered off to Ebbsfleet with me mate.
Today was bad enough as it was...

Glad you got there and hopefully it helped erase another mainly grim watch at The Valley.

Killer was good entertainment being interviewed pre match in the lounge , I shook hands with Kermorgant and thanked him for the enjoyment he gave us during his time here.
massive foul stink where we sat back of west lower next to directors box was looking for a dead rat or something , eventually found that it was fucking fox poo ffs checked my shoes thought I hadn’t trod in it (wrong could fucking smell it driving all the way home ffs )
they don’t clean the stands there was shitty ice cream or some other crap that was also on the floor near our seats, these filthy knobs must be watching the women’s dross .
i hate us with a passion , so many limited footballers , no one getting me off my seat .

  • Got back home at 7.30 after having a couple of pints in the Pilot before heading off to Euston.
I still believe Nathan Jones is the manager to keep us in this league, based on a poor squad that needs motivation to perform at this level.
I know we haven't seen this in the last period of games, and the many criticisms quoted on here are completely fair.
As a long term season ticket holder living in south Manchester I never give up supporting the club, and especially the team, even when the team is playing badly.
I was saddened when on 70/75 mins into the game, there was loud, concerted booing from the Covered End, and this continued until the end of the game.
I always thought that this group of supporters were the grass roots of the club, vociferous fans that supports the team through thick and thin. Cheering the team on, even when we realise that the team is struggling. Offering support when certain players are not at their best, trying to urge the team on to do better. showing our support even when things are not going quite right.
Things have now changed, fans getting on the back of every player that makes a mistake. is this a reflection of modern society, I don't know, but the atmosphere is certainly not helping the players.
I remember in League 1, even when things were tough, I never heard such a toxic atmosphere. (except perhaps Crawley game)
A bit of a ramble, but I have a message, COVERED END, YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT!

The last 2 games especially I've seen players (and the coaches behind them) who can't have been giving it their all on the training pitch, and it shows on a matchday. I can see why people are booing - encouragement from the stands is too little, too late, if you've coasted the preparation. A very frustrating watch.

Yes. Today was bad. My last live watch before going back to the States. At the moment I just can’t see how Nathan Jones will turn this around. We are so bad. Today we were outplayed by Norwich.

Bad recruitment? I’m not so sure. I’m not convinced of Nathan Jones’s coaching abilities anymore.
What a depressing watch that was.

it was a poor display. Don’t get rid of Jones. Kelman‘s best game ever. We’ve got middlesbrough and West Ham next. we will most probably lose them. Jones is going to get loads of pelters. he himself will have to man up and get on with his job. I thought Grant and Carey were crap today. I don’t know and I don’t think he knows which his best team is. I can’t blame him for that because some players just do not turn up on certain days like today.all  We can hope for is that there are three teams worse than us. we have just been playing all the teams below us and losing or drawing. It’s going to be a very very tough season ahead.. Come on Charlton.

There's not much anyone can do with a midfield which is not championship standard. I think all of our fit midfielders came on today and after the first 20 minutes none of them were up to it. Team after team come down here with midfielders who can either pass forward quickly and accurately or make good attacking runs with the ball. We have neither. Even defensively our midfield is poor. Nobody likes Skipp but without him our midfield just gets overrun. We have only one hope between now and January, that Chalobah can manage some games. We have only one hope after January, that we recruit an attacking midfielder. Without both of those things happening we will be relegated.

We don't play West Ham. It's Boro away, followed by Bolton and Sheff Utd at home. We will still probably lose them though!

I keep reading on here about "let's just get to January & then see what the transfer window brings...."

2 problems with that.  1) the owners wont be dipping into their pockets, but even if they do it will be minimal money spent. And 2) we are already at the squad limit, so much so we are having to ask  the EFL if we can de-register Apter so that we can sign Solly March - so who are we going to get rid of in January so that we can sign the magical players who are going to save us from relegation? We tried in the summer (and we had 3 months then - now we'll have just 1) to flog / loan/ give away players we didn't want, but to no avail - and so much so we even had to buy-off our Captain as he was surplus to requirements with no takers.

So all looking a bit grim on that front I'd say.

Lost the will after 5 pages or so but to me the malaise started when NJ decided to go to 4-2-3-1 as he'd had a sudden awakening in the night yet found the dream was not real once he found he had to fit square pegs into round holes. Could dissect everything in to minute detail having witnessed all of this ensuing debacle but to surmise. Thinking we would get a season from Godden? Messing Mannion about yet again? Asking Leaburn to play as one up top and do 3 players' work? Mesik and Billy excepted (though he was awful today) the recruitment? The Ouma mess when it was common knowledge he had previous? Whole thing is disjointed whether it's the owners or NJ. One way or another change is needed both in terms of ambition and spirit around the place. People laugh when managers that have won pretty much all there is pick Jordan Henderson. Obviously we aren't quite in the same bracket but Greg Docherty was our equivalent and Lloyd Jones leads by example but isn't a leader. NJ is now in repetitive mode. No Coady to bail him out. 3 more games at most.

Forest were in a similar position when Steve Cooper took over. He is currently available.
No chance. Forest had a very good squad for the level and a good budget. We have neither of these things and Cooper wouldn't even enter discussions with us. Not a realistic choice
You don’t know that for certain
I don't know that Pep wouldn't either but I can make a pretty educated guess. Delusion if you think we have a chance of Cooper
Because Steve cooper and pep are remotely on the same level.

The third problem with “let’s just get to January” is that there’s probably about 12 matches (can’t be arsed to look up precisely how many) between now and then. Fail to win any/hardly any of those and what we do in the January transfer window won’t really matter much.

I’ve said for some time that our next win would be against Bolton on November 3rd and I’m still hoping I’m right. I’ll take Boro as an alternative.

Today was piss poor. Not sure about criticism of “the owners” as the major shareholders will rely on the advice of senior management, including re Jones.

On the cost of sacking Jones, a reminder that Lee Bowyer was unimpressed by the offer of a five-year contract because, he pointed out, they are not paid up in full when you get sacked. I don’t believe Jones should be sacked currently but if he was the compensation wouldn’t be the full value of his contract (unless of course he has a compensation clause similar to one that Pardew was reported to have had  and which a cynic might suggest had the potential to act as a perverse incentive).

There’s plenty to be sad and angry about in life.
Im determined to not let Charlton be one of them.

I have been saying that to myself since sept 1967 and i still get sad [not so angry now] when we lose.

Yeah, that was bad. It was really bad because the first 20 minutes were good, Norwich changed approach, and then dominated the next 70 by and large.

Games are won and lost in midfield, and we won the first 20 and lost the last 70. Carey and JRC together aren't the answer. Both worked hard, but I'm not sure which, if either, was supposed to be the 10. I think it was more 4-1-4-1 which begs the question why? I mean I get the Skipp and Cov complaints but we were torn open today through the middle and at the back. Chalobah isn't going to solve all our problems, but when he's back he will solve some. Until then, I think we need to go back to the Cov/Skipp double pivot and play an actual midfielder (JRC) who can pick a pass in front of them.

Coventry picked a bad match to have a bad match as our lone holding player. He was chasing shadows a lot of the day, which isn't his fault. But he should have given away a penalty, which is.

Grant was completely anonymous. He really, really blows hot and cold and despite starting on the left he contributed absolutely nothing.

Speaking of the left sided problem, I'm worried Edwards might need a loan to get up to speed. It's not his fault, after a year out it must be so tough and I can't imagine training prepares you for matches. But he looks miles off of it. And we have two players in Mesik and Bell who are decent at LB/LWB so there's no need for Edwards to even be in the squad in the foreseeable future. I love him, but he's going to need to figure something out outside of the matchday squad to get up to speed.

Chaz looked a breath of fresh air up front but faded as we lost control. TC was very good. Those are the bright spots.

At the back, oh boy. Jones was off it today and we know he's susceptible to teams playing on the deck, which Norwich did. Billy's last ditch tackles were excellent but his heading was woeful and he got caught out of position at times as well. Ramsay looked like he was playing out of position at RB, which, to be fair, he's spent the last two years playing RCB. Concentration and basic mistakes remain a problem for him. He's got the ability and 1-v-1 defending to go as high as he would like, he just needs to put it together. He's another one who hasn't had a lot of football this year and it showed.

Okonkwo looked like a League One/lower Championship keeper. Which is what he is. He was the best available, but his kicking is woeful and his shot stopping at times leaves something to be desired.

They were better than us all over the pitch. Norwich aren't a bad side, they were just in bad form, but we just looked bad. At Watford I thought it was tactics. Today, I think there's some that comes down to tactics, but we were just beaten all over the pitch.

    We're bang in trouble.

Jones isn't going anywhere. The club is too committed to him. But I hope we can park the bus next weekend and avoid humiliation.

Not splashing the cash on midfield and in attack really shows. We always felt like we were two players short in the summer. Chalobah papers over some of those cracks WHEN FIT, but obviously he's rarely fit. Grant papered over the RW hole for some of this season, but now that he's out of form, what do you do? Well, you go back to 5-3-2 with Kelman and TC up front, playing TC our of position, and playing McNamara at RWB where he's not great and just hope you don't lose, or lose badly, against 'Boro.

I said it last season around this time, and I'll say it again, this season is going to be a test of our mettle and our hearts. As supporters. So get into your GPs now and get your tickers looked at. Because this is going to be another season where we flirt with danger the whole way.

    Keep the faith.

The fourth problem is, that the lower down the division we are the harder it will be to recruit any decent players. No-one wants a relegation on their cv, although some may take on the risk if the pay is high enough and there are get out clauses at the end of the season. But that's not good for finances or squad stability.

Keeping Godden and releasing Doc looking like another NJ disasterclass
Godden can still provide influence to the strikers. We're also in October not even January so we will see more of Godden.

Dunno. I think only Preston are as shit as us at the moment and they'd even probably beat us. Can see Burnley, Norwich and Watford all getting out of it
  • Derby, Burnley and Preston are genuinely bad teams but I’m not sure we’re better than all three. We’ve gone backwards from last season by the looks of things and we were pretty poor last season.

Pointless blaming a single player but… after that substitute performance Knibbs is officially a write-off for me. Aside from a couple of snatched goals I cannot recall him being ever being involved in any game for us, let alone influencing play. Hides in the pockets and never shows for the ball, shirks tackles, doesn’t win headers, doesn’t press particularly well

    OKONKWO:  flappy

RAMSAY: good 10 minutes then dross

    JONES: ropey

KOUMETIO: one great goal saving tackle then 85 minutes as a pub player

    EDWARDS: not fit

RANKIN-COSTELLO: MOM all the good stuff in the opening 20 came thru him then he was adrift among wankers shirkers and frauds

    COVENTRY: hopeless

    GRANT: lazy

CAREY: contributed nothing The single most determined 55 minutes of hiding I’ve seen in 50 years watching and playing football  a scandalous dereliction of duty worthy of dismissal

CAMPBELL: plenty of effort good pace but moribund end product

KELMAN: pitiful service and no support

    MESIK: unfortunate

LEABURN: worked hard but snuffed out by his miserable colleagues

    KNIBBS: did he play?

MWAMBA wrong player thrown into a lost cause

Manager Jones is either terribly ill or has forgotten everything he’s ever known about the game a baffling minestrone of tactical idiocy and random selection Followed by incoherent drivel post match. A new low by a catastrophic margin

    Referee desperately inconsistent
